20 Reasons Why Nokia 5800 is better than Apple Iphone

Filed Under Nokia 5800 Reviews, Nokia 5800 v/s Apple Iphone

We get lots of requests to compare in detail Nokia 5800 with Apple Iphone 3G. Here are some reasons we believe Nokia 5800 is way ahead than Iphone-

1) Size
The iphone is bigger in size and uneasy for one hand grip. Nokia 5800 is designed to fit well into your hands. Being smaller in width, its easy to operate single handedly.

Iphone size: 115.5 X 62.1 X 12.3 mm
Nokia 5800 size: 111 X 51.7 X 15.5 mm

2) Weight
Iphone is much bulkier than Nokia 5800. Nokia 5800 is 25g lighter than Iphone in weight.

Iphone: 133g
Nokia 5800: 109g

3) Screen Resolution
The Iphone has 3.5” screen while Nokia 5800 has 3.2” but the resolution of 5800 is far more superior to Iphone.

Resolution:
Iphone: 480 by 320
Nokia 5800: 640 by 360

4) Storage
Iphone comes with two options- 8GB & 16GB internal memory. Nokia has a more flexible option to offer 8GB with micro SD card which is expandable upto 16GB. Nokia owners can expand memory size according to needs which the Iphone guys can’t do.

5) Input Methods
Iphone: Finger only.
Nokia 5800: Finger, stylus, plectrum, handwriting recognition.

6) Features
Apple Iphone has lots of missing features like cut and paste function, saving email attachments, no support for third party headphones, ringtones, pricey iphone applications, many software bugs and other technical glitches. Nokia 5800 Tube has no such issues plus many more amazing features included.

7) Colors
Iphone: Black for 8 & 16 GB, White for 16 GB only.
Nokia 5800: Red, Blue and Black.

8 ) Battery
Nokia 5800 provides upto 35 hrs of music playing time against Apple Iphone which claims just 24 hrs. Overall battery power (talktime/standby) is also about 30% more in Nokia 5800. What more, 5800 has a removable battery which Iphone lacks.

Iphone: 5 hrs talk-time, 300 hrs standby, not removable.
Nokia 5800: 8.8 hrs talk-time, 406 hrs standby, removable battery.

9) Camera
Iphone: 2 MP, no flash, no zoom, no additional camera.
Nokia 5800: 3.2 MP, Flash, 3x digital zoom with Carl Zeiss lens. A second camera in front is available for video calling/conferencing.

10) Video Calling
Iphone: No Video calling possible in Iphone.
Nokia 5800: Video calling is possible.

11) Video Recording
IPhone: No option for video recording.
Nokia 5800: Video recording is included.

12) Music Service
Iphone: Paid service with Apple Itunes Store. You pay and download music to your Iphone.
Nokia 5800: “Comes with music” service is bundled with Nokia 5800 Xpressmusic phone by which you can download as much music as you want for 1 year- FREE!!

13) Voice Dialing
Iphone: Not Available
Nokia 5800: Available

14) Voice Recording
IPhone: Not Available
Nokia 5800: Available

15) Web Browser
Iphone: Webkit based Safari browser, no flash available.
Nokia 5800: Webkit based browser, supports flash lite.

16) FM Radio
Iphone: Not Available
Nokia 5800: Available

17) Bluetooth
Iphone: Bluetooth is available for just handsfree, no file sharing possible.
Nokia 5800: Bluetooth available for handsfree and file sharing is possible. Better audio quality on bluetooth in 5800 with A2DP technology which Iphone lacks.

18) Messaging
Iphone: It does not support message forwarding, multiple SMS deletion, sending SMS to multiple recipients and multimedia messages (MMS).
Nokia 5800: All the above is possible plus it has MMS ver 1.3, message size upto 600kb, and automatic resizing of Images for MMS.

19) Price
Nokia 5800 is hopefully unlocked (without any contract) and will sell much cheaper for just £219 in UK which is equal to 279 Euros or $385.

Apple iPhone 3G, on the other hand, with contract in US comes for $199 & $299 for 8 & 16 GB models and the plans with AT&T are way too expensive. Unlocked Apple Iphones sells for around $800 on Ebay.

In other parts of the world, the 8GB unsubsidized Iphone model costs 499 euros ($700) in Italy, 350 pounds ($620) in UK, $700 in India. Nokia 5800 Xpressmusic is expected to sell around the world for about $400 or below.

20) Experience
Nokia: Ages of experience, hundreds of success stories and dozens of smart handsets in current portfolio. Nokia has about 40% market share with the No.1 spot with no close competitors. Certainly the king when it comes to brand value, service and experience.

Apple: First phone ever launched by Apple is Iphone, no prior experience in the telecom market. It’s a novice in the market with a very less market share despite having millions of Iphone sold.

Verdict:
Almost all the major brands around the world like Samsung, HTC, LG, etc launched their touchscreen smartphones with a hope to beat Apple’s Iphone. No-one came close to Iphone when it comes to looks, style, feel and features.

This is the first time a tech giant like Nokia has hit it hard with its first true touchscreen smartphone. Nokia 5800 is a real Iphone killer with way ahead features, perfect looks and great price. Bravo Nokia, Well Done!!

The above is the most comprehensive list of Iphone vs Nokia 5800 I found on net. Great work and I agree with each point you raised. Thanks.

I’ve bookmarked this entry into my calendar for October 2009. I agree that 5800 has the potential to be an iPhone killer, however I think you may have underestimated Apple somewhat. Have you considered, for example, that the next iPhone may be available even before the 5800 in many important territories.

I don’t wish to dampening your enthusiasm for the 5800, but I fear that your ‘iPhone killer’ battle cry is a tad premature.

    Hey James

Thanks for your comment. Well you already admitted - “I agree that 5800 has the potential to be an iPhone killer”, so there is not much to say now. But we respect your thoughts for still feeling Iphone is better that anything else. We were having the same view like you and many others but that changed as soon as we saw 5800 first.

we prepared the list of 20 points above for comparing features of 5800 and Iphone. Your comment would have been more strong if you have raised atleast 2 logical points supporting your love for Iphone.

We have much more reasons than the above listed to believe that Nokia 5800 is far superior to Iphone. But we searched out the whole net and were still unable to find why Iphone is still better than 5800. Could you enlighten some points here please?

You mentioned- “the next Iphone may be available before Xmas in some territories”. What will it change? Do you have some insider info that the next Iphone is more feature rich than 5800? If so, be prepared for another reply from Nokia :)
And yes, we are too enthusiastic about 5800 and so the world is. And thats not a ‘cry’ as you said, thats ‘joy’ :) Thanks for stopping by and sharing your views.

    More comments are welcome..

I would add that the 5800 works as a 3G modem without additional software.

    Okay, I’ll play along;

You say that the iPhone is ‘bulkier’. A simple calculation based on the figures that you have provided show that the 5800 is actually bulkier than the iPhone.

You have completely ignored the most stunning aspect of the iPhone, the App Store. Nokia will struggle to match what Apple have achieved with the iPhone SDK and App Store. iPhone 3rd party support is in its infancy, but yet it has produced some wonderful apps, the likes of which I have never seen on any smartphone!

You mentioned that Nokia have ‘Ages of experience’ whilst Apple is a ‘novice’ in this marketplace. This is true, but only if you totally believe that these new devices are more phone than computer. If like me you believe that what we are seeing here is the birth of the next ubiquitous computing platform then it is Nokia who are ill prepared for the future. Time will tell…

On the subject of pricing. Consider the iPod as an example. The iPhone Nano (or whatever it will be called) will be much cheaper than the current iPhone, and probably less than the standard 5800.

As I’ve already mentioned, the 5800 has potential. The extent of that potential is hard to define at this moment in time. I wish you all the best with your excellent new blog and hope that things work out for the Nokia 5800 as you have foreseen.

The aspects of the 5800 that I’m most excited about are the video capture/editing and the social media tools.

James, Stop posting your crap for the fuc**ng Iphone. Its the worst phone I have ever used. Can u imagine a ’smartphone’ without bluetooth and MMS capabilities? I cant even surf net properly on it, no support for email saving, computer files saving and no flash support and u call it a computer phone?

The itunes service sucks.. and so do the fuc**ng non removable battery which is stick to iphone’s ass. I see a 3 megapixel camera in most of the good smartphones now, even some have upto 8mp but these idiots still have the same 2mp bundled. And that 2MP one is of no use too if u cant even record videos with it. Have u tried ever to take a photo with Iphone in night? My beautiful wife looks horrible in the Iphone camera. It also have so much messaging problems as listed here. Grrr..

I agree that Iphone is still ahead than anything else on terms of looks, but should I lick those looks if its not having basic features.

You are making your claims about the next so called Iphone version which I cant notice anywhere else? Have u seen the next iphone or u know what it includes. Dont presume anything if u have not seen. You are comparing a future iphone in your imagination which nobody knows about with a present nokia phone which is just out.

All your points are based on assuming terms like “time will tell” “will be much cheaper” “probably” etc. Stop fantasising about the next so called iphone and talk on what you have curently in front of you. If Nokia can launch a better handset than the current iphone, is it not capable of slapping them again when their next iphone will come, will it sit idle?

You call about the App store? My iphone hanged 2 times while downloading and installing those bullsh** applications. I got to restore that from Apple and their service sucks too. They gave back my Iphone after 3 days for making just a simple restore and reinstall of OS.

I m not a 5800 fan yet and cant say much about it till I see it but I just HATE Iphone.

    Andy, Cool down mate :)

Why you are so much upset with Iphone? Ok I understand you don’t like Iphone but James was just sharing his views. Please be nice to everyone, this is not a place to fight with each other. We are friends here and just discussing our views. You did not noticed that James is also looking at Nokia5800 as a promising device.

James, I agree to some extent on what you said. Let me talk about the 4 main points you raised-

Bulkier- I do not know how you calculated that but being 25g lighter in weight Nokia 5800 can’t be bulkier than Iphone, right? If you are talking about height of phone, yeah 5800 is thicker but overall size makes it much compact, handy and lighter.

App Store- I agree Iphone has good App store but Nokia too includes a download section within the phone. We are yet to find what are the applications available with it. We just made one blog entry about the ‘Qik’ Application which enables sharing live streaming video from your 5800. What more, it has millions of music tracks available for free download which Apple Itunes charges for.

Phone with computer- Yes its the age of smartphones with PC capabilities. As far as I remember Nokia was the pioneer in setting this trend with their N & E series smartphones ;) Andy in his frustration raised some good points questioning the mobile computing capabilities of Iphone and I agree to some extent. Apple does not have a major market share and is far behind than other leaders in whatever it deals- Computers, Operating systems or Mobiles. Though having the technology and capability, it has yet to prove on many fronts.

Pricing- You said it all yourself- “The iPhone Nano (or whatever it will be called) will be much cheaper than the current iPhone, and probably less than the standard 5800.” As Andy said above, its just imagination for now, so lets not discuss ‘assuming’ something.

Thanks for the good wishes for blog. We hope to come upto your expectations. Thanks for your views.

    Mohammed, thanks for that.

There may be many many other services and features like Ovi, Qik, etc. which will be finally revealed with the release of Nokia 5800. Who knows we may prepare a list something like “50 Reasons why Nokia 5800 is the Best smartphone”. Cheers! :)

P.S- For those who do not know about Ovi, its an online social media sharing and files organizing service by Nokia. For details, check out- http://www.ovi.com/services/

I agree with most of your reasons.
I like you to expand some items to clarify and show the HUGE gap between capability of Nokia/Symbian vs iPhone/Mac OsX.

    1) Bluetooth: just look at the bluetooth profiles Nokia 5800 supports!
A2DP, AVRCP, BIP, DUN, FTP, GAP, GOEP, HFP, HID, HSP, OPP, PBAP, SAP, SDP, SPP
Bluetooth is a great technology, but apple assumes it as a “wire replacement” for your headphone! inasne!

    2) Input Method: you can take a look at Eldar Murtazin’s review on 5800 (esp Input Method). This is important for an “everyday-phone” to use it with single-hand and both-hands.

    3) Power Capability: Nokia offers a BL-5J 3.7V 1320 mAh removable battery, that means you can buy additional battery for doubling the current great 8h talk-time or 30 h music playback time! Moreover each chargeable battery loses it capacity after 200 charge cycles even in the best condition. you have to pay alot to iPhone service centers and yield your phone for days to replace your wearied battery. In nokia you simply buy a battery from a regular shop and replace it in less than 1 minute!

    4) Camera: the megapixel is not the whole thing for a digital camera, focal length, lens, sensor quality and type, software, flash, color quality, noise level, … should be considered.
I’ve not tried iPhone 3G by myself, but there is a tiny hole on the back of iPhone that is covered by a tiny plastic , Apple calls it camera! terrible quality (you can find many sample pictures on the internet), no video, no flash.
I think apple included camera in order to fill iPhone spec sheet on the paper! as they did for the useless bluetooth of iPhone.
In practice you can think the iPhone has no camera, no bluetooth.

    5) OS: the major expectation from a smartphone is the ability to run applications, many applications.
Symbian is a mature and stable OS with many free and paid applications available. It has a small footprint (vs Mac OS) and needs less CPU power for doing the same services. I also like its multitasking features (which iPhone hurts me in this area).
Symbian phones (V9 and higher) are capable of running Symbian C / Standard C-C (partly via Open-C) / Java / Python and Flash lite applications and Nokia platforms (vs Sony Ericsson/iPhone) are powerful to run many Native/Java apps concurrently.
For the platform I’ve tried (Windows Mobile, iPhone, Nokia S60) the S60 is the most stable, fluent, usable and available OS for a everyday-mobile experience.

    Conclusion:
Nokia or HTC phones are far ahead of iPhone in the case of capability, functionality and “mobile phone” nature both in Hardware and the OS.
The truth is nobody has to love technology and functionality. People are free to love the style or design and appreciate the beauty of the iPhone more than the capability of the Nokia 5800. Apple knows it and makes money from their stylish but weaker products. How many mp3 players do you know that are better than iPod? I know many, but iPod won the advertising, marketing and sales record. It’s not technological, It’s MARKETING achievement.

The iPhone is cool for what it is. A consumer device. But as far as inspiring creativity, forget it. From the perspective of a developer the Apps Store is a joke. Sure, go ahead and spend months on an application and maybe it will see the light of day. As a developer I wouldn’t put time into an application if I thought it had the slightest chance of not being distributed. Flash is coming around and with the release of Skyfire (www.skyfire.com) Apple is going to have to include flash on the next release.

    Monday, October 13th, 2008 at 2:14 am

I forgot some points in my previous post:

    6) i18n & Unicode: (Internationalization and localization): The S60 platform on Nokia phones easily renders international web pages and other materials and it’s easy to change the overall language of the phone. The S60 also is capable to support text inputing in both RTL (Hebrew, Persian,…) and LTR (English, Spanish,…) languages (Bi-directional) in SMS/emails/contact and in other softwares …
The iPhone can not display RTL web pages and does not support all the unicode transcripts. there is no RTL text-inputing too.

    7) Free Xfrer: iPhone (like iPod) make you use a proprietary software to transfer your music to the device. It is the worst thing for a music-savvy device!
Nokia (like SE, Samsung, Creative, …) do not impose you anything. the Phone memory is plug & play and you may even use a RAM reader. I can transfer music/files to the phone even in the terminal of my linux box! (a simple mount, cp, eject)

and, dear admin. would you change the logo of this website please?! too vicious for what it meant. ;-p

iPhone have never catch my attention and interest due to its mediocre features and high price as a matter of fact I even switch from my current telecom company to another when I found out that my current telecom company will bring iPhone to the Philippines. Thats how much I hate iPhone being overprice and overhype and it doesn’t even deserve such.

The 5800 is exactly the opposite of iPhone, feature packed with a good value thats why I’m buying one. I will even help promote 5800 as much as I could in my own little way just 2 kill the iPhone crap.

The volume of the Nokia 5800 is 0,82 percent larger than the iPhone.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volume

The Nokia 5800 is lighter than the iPhone, and therefore bulkier.

[bulky - having great volume in proportion to weight]

    http://mw1.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/bulky

Personally I like the form of the Nokia phone better - even though the screen is slightly smaller - and I prefer a lighter phone.

But to be correct the Nokia phone is both larger in volume and bulkier than the iPhone…

You all are true that nokia 5800 is better, but when it comes to compare, say good things of iphone too. For example it has multi touch screen that 5800 lacks, and 640 Mhz CPU while 5800 has 379 Mhz CPU, and I think 5800 with ipod touch will be much better and cheaper and it won’t lacks the abilities that one lacks and they’ll complete each other…

Atleast in India I can say that 5800 will prove better than IPhone Because of the features that can be used in India.
I dont have any Hard feelings towards IPhone but it doesnot have all the req features.
On the other Hand 5800 cruised in with a handful of features that will fascinate the Mobile Users in India.

sorry for trying to say something that maybe most of the person here will not agree.
i knew Iphone was not that user friendly from begining, even iphone will not attract me.I just don’t know why everyone are that much to Nokia 5800.
    Did we forgot something?
I agree that Nokia 5800 will much more complete in feature.
At the same time, did we forgot that there are still alot of thing that maybe 5800 not able to compare with I phone?
    How do you thing on:
    The Meterial?
    The class?
    The sound quality?
The sensitive of the “Motion sensor”?
The fantastic of the Touch control?

Everyone had thier own need. Will the Iphone much more better to the person who looking a phone to match with thier own class?

Will the Nokia 5800 really that useful, stable, durable?who can tell on this?

p/s:sorry if i had alot of grammar misstake.I’m not that good in english.

Guys, to beat the iPhone, Nokia will need to build a great ecosystem around the 5800. That is the biggest competitive differentiator that Apple has developed. Ovi is good, but not specific to the 5800. So ultimately, the phone with the larger ecosystem behind will win. Eg. Microsoft Windows is No. 1 becuase of the ecosystem, otherwise technically Linux is the superior OS.

  35. 35 Ziko Mgbatogu
    Monday, December 8th, 2008 at 9:49 pm

I have been closely observing the iPhone since it was released and became available in the UK. At the time I was working in Symbian. On several occasions I took it upon myself to compare Symbian OS (i.e. the OS on Nokia 5800) and Mac OS on the iPhone which always yielded interesting results. The fact is both Operating Systems are portable and can therefore be made to work on almost all computing systems in the world. However when it comes to functioning as an advanced Operating System for mobile phones Symbian clearly triumphs over the Mac OS simply because it was developed to work on mobile phones implicitly. That is principally the reason why all the known iPhone software feature problems exist.

To the Apple fans, there are still some good points that Apple has brought onboard such as a very good GUI (Graphic User Interface) that is obviously an offshoot from the iMac and MacBook version of Mac OS. They have also managed to make a snappy device that delivers quick transitions and responses when used.

And for all those that see the faster processor on the iPhone or iPhone3G and compare it to the Nokia 5800 slower processor and think it’s a reflection of Apple’s advancement with mobile phones consider this then:

    How functionality relates to performance
To explain this clearly I will show the correlation between functionality, performance and other variables using racing cars. If you take two cars that have the same weight and put similar engines in them and then race both cars, if one outperforms the other then you would have to say that such a car is superior. Imagine that one of the cars is the iPhone and the other Nokia 5800. Imagine also that both cars are of the same base weight but that every feature either phone has is an additional weight to its base weight. That would mean that the Nokia 5800 will be a heavier car than the iPhone 3G. And if the processor represented the size of engine it would mean that the Nokia 5800 with its features is heavier than the iPhone and with is slower processor has a smaller engine than the iPhone. Now when both cars are raced users might be excited that their iPhone 3G was 1 or 2 seconds faster than the Nokia 5800 but when you holistically consider that it was competing against a cheaper, heavier and smaller engine car you realise that the iPhone 3G performance is by all evaluation actually either at par or below par given its lighter weight and bigger engine.

I just watched a video of this thing in action on YouTube and it really looked pretty bad. I guess in a spec sheet contest the nokia would win but some people only look at a spec sheet and don’t appreciate user interface design, ease of use, and the fluidity of the interface which is what the iPhone excels at and can’t be put on a spec sheet. Who cares if a phone has every feature imaginable if the software isn’t very good?

I love how when he flicks a photo it doesn’t move at all and then a second after he lifts his finger it slides off.

    Okay,
its easy to say there is an iPhone killer. But you cant kill the iPhone.
There will never be an iPhone-killer, cause the iPhone does what it should do:
    - it works flawless as a phone
    - it is easy and intuitive to use
    - it has a WLAN module working fast and without problems
    - it is not too bulky but big enough to give some real estate on a screen
    - it has some ‘flair’ to it which is a plus for customers!!
    - its nice to look at
    - it has some quality apps in its store- considering how young the store is
to sum up only a few aspects.
Of course it has some flaws:
    - it lacks BT
    - it cant edit Office documents
BUT Apple was the first to introduce such a phone!! Nokia is only copying like all the other companies instead of evolution!

Symbian s great for productivity, but it isnt as simple as the Apple iPhone.
Symbian has great potential but needs a capable and fast processor otherwise it sucks and is really slow. I know what I am talking about I tried and used all the E-Series devices - actually this is posted on an E-Series device.

    Apple for consumer
    Nokia for business
BUT BOTH have their right to coexist. Anybody else claiming one is better than the other is not considering the individual..

Have both 1g and 2g iphone. Here is the big problem and mistake that Apple has made with the iphone. They have locked it into AT&T. A company that most people hate to do business with and a phone plan that requires a mortgage on your home to purchase. One Apple employee and I were talking about it; his statement to me was that “iphone is the most locked down phone in the world.” Is that a good thing??? If you buy something, isn’t it yours to use with the carrier of your choosing? If Nokia gives us an unlocked phone, they win hands down, no contest!

The App store is very nice, but what apps are actually innovative and useful? I downloaded enough that every page on my iphone was full, then decided to only leave the useful ones on the iphone. Not very many left. The 20 points above are actually quite good.

Apples draconian ways of total control make it very distasteful to many consumers. If we get a good competitor against the iphone, I would switch in a minute to regain my freedom from the claws of the iphone.

Interesting that we carry a world of personal information in our hand that AT&T/Apple has access to. Do we not value our privacy anymore? Is it “okay” for AT&T/Apple to have such control over our privacy? Wars have been fought about this since the beginning of time. It almost seems they are preparing us to be carrying around the “mark” with so much invasion of privacy with the iphone. If Nokia allows the phone to be unlocked, it will be the clear winner and this statement is coming from an Apple fan. If Apple did to their computers what they have done to the iphone, as far as control goes, their computer business would dry up almost overnight. Some things to think about.:)

This my first post EVER on thr iphone vs “the rest”
Anyone remembers when Motorola introduced the original razr? It was the craze of everyone! nearly everyone had one…i however stuck to the nokia 6620/6600
i make this comparison to say this…back then the razr was all beauty,no brain…..future: the iphone vs “the rest”
what i can defend the iphone above any other touch device is the “eye candy”….the UI is impressive.so much so that this is the focus point of the iphone for me……the beauty/”eye candy” of the user interface……the iphone wins hands down here….
moving on however, “the rest” ie the 5800 beats the iphone in every department….as listed already in this article
someone stated earlier about the apple app store….there is the download! folder(yes admittedly not as savy as the apple app store) in the 5800 as well as symbian being an open source platform thus enabling numerous developers to efficiently create apps for the device….unlike iphone users who must clearly wait for apple to release an app….symbian/nokia we are not dependant on the leniency of the manufacturer…
For example the N95 had an app created called “landscape pro” which rotated the screen of the N95 in both directions! This wasnt an app created by nokia but by a developer, thus reinforcing the point of “open platform” and “not being manufacturer dependant”
Ill add some insult to injury here but can the iphone do this?
    http://cellnology.vox.com/library/post/video-rock-n-scroll-beta-1.html
    (again an open source application)
Lastly, another comment made was the speed of the iphone in comparison with someone stating the iphones 700 mgz….
to that comment i say “implementation”
ie you can have a faster spec’d/clocked processor but it all comes down to how the OS implements it. So the 5800 may have 369mgz processor but its how the OS of the 5800 implements it that counts! it can/still/will be as snappy as the iphone or marginally slower

i do apologize about my winded rant but imho i just cant see what the big deal is with the iphone….
even my old n95 beats the iphone hands down
again i say can the iphone do this?

ps the N series touchscreen is announced..goodbye iphone!!!!

Given the URL I’m sure this site isn’t biased ;) Anyway, I think lots of the points made are valid but I would like to point out a few more issues.
As a mobile games developer I can tell you that the biggest issue with Nokia phones these days is the OS. Symbian simply sucks. It has evolved over many years and they’ve never really got it right. The iPhone imposes lots of restrictions (no BG apps) but it runs so much more smoothly on similar hardware - they are both roughly 400Mhz ARM processors.
Nokia should stop creating sooooo many phone which are not that different and concentrate on making a few really good ones. This deluge of phones they produce just creates a compatibility nightmare for us developers for no reason. Less is more nokia!
Look at Apple, with 2 phones which are identical really - for us developers it is 10 times simpler to develop for. Take note that all iPhones come with 3D acceleration, all NGage phones do not (including this 5800) - which also simplifies life for a developer.
That, coupled with the App Store, is why we are seeing a surge in development for the iPhone, whilst NGage is struggling.
I hope Nokia can turn it round but it looks to me like too many years without serious competition has made them lazy. I expect the likes of Samsung, LG & HTC to eat further into Nokia Marketshare with their Android phones.

Really great post.. Commenter like James and Andy make it greater. @Andy the pic of your line made me laugh. I support James on the App store point. Nokia needs a App store or the download application needs to be improved. The App store in iPhone is a wonderful thing from which you can discover and download applications and games. It annoys me when many great Apps are made for iPhone or blackberry only. Like Google’s new voice search App. (I frequently comment on their mobile blog reminding them there are other mobiles beside iPhone) why isn’t making apps for Nokia? Apps are primary importance for any device and discovering them should be made easier. @JFK your ecosystem point is correct and important. It’s all about hype, the iPhone’s hype is large that’s why major company create there App for iPhone. This should change.

dudes…nice discussion going on…..NOKIA IS AWESOME IN ALL ACCEPTS….nothing can beat it…APPLE is far more good in laptops compared to cell phones….IPHONE lacks some basic needs that everyone wants…..no video recording-what is the use without it,video resoultion sucks in IPHONE-jus check some 5800 video playback u will remain stuck to it just like tv,they r stunning…not like dull videos in IPHONE…coming to camera-what fuck we can do with 2MP camera,no copy paste,no forwarding…
BUT ONE THING I LIKE IN IPHONE IS ITS TOUCH IS EASY AND FASTER AND ITS THIN.other than this application store for apple, people think its very easy to run any application on iphone…DUDES-THESE IS THE FACT-”NOKIA IS COMING IN APPLICATION PLATFORM WITH SYMBIAN AS OS,IT ACQUIRED IT…JUS WAIT AND SEE HOW IPHONE GONNA LOOSE ONCE THE NO.1 MOBILE MAKER NOKIA STARTS DEVELOPING APPLICATIONS,RECENTLY DEVELOPERS R MAKING APPLICATIONS—–SO JUST WAIT AND WATCH,

Some functionality iPhone is missing and not mentioned here are:

    1) You cannot send an application to background, which means one application at a time.
    2) You cannot use iphone as a stand alone device, you will always need desktop or laptop in order to reset, copy your own stuff like music, pics etc.
    3) Tv output is limited to Movies and pictures only.
    4) Thanks to Intelliscreen and SMS Notify, without them you cannot even get notification icons and detils of notes and calendar. In order to get these you need to jailbreak your phone.
    5) no themes even wallpaper on standy screen for people who want to use it without jailbreaking. The only option is to get wallpaper on lock screen.
    6) Lock code is only limited to 4 digits numeric.
    7) Video Calls are limited to some service providers. 8) Missing Advanced Wifi security Patches. you cannot connect to WIFI having advance security settings.
    9) Limitations of Landscape mode: Text, emails, main screen.
    10) streaming linked videos missing. no software available to date in order to watch tv.
    11) you will be restricted to hear and watch only apple supported formats. no software to date in order to listen or watch formats like rm and avi etc.
    12) unable to delete individual text messages, you have to delete whole conversation or jailbreak and go for other softwares.
    13) version 2.0 onwards finish the ability to autostart software or even start software from slepp mode. like iphone azan will not work on 3g if you want to be notified by azan sound on prayer times, even there paid version.

Nokia 5800 is already available in the market (UAE) and it is half the price of iPhone and almost all the features are there. Especially the better camera and sound quality.
Ofcourse the smoothness of scrollingpages in iPhone is not there in 5800, but still with all the points you have mentioned in this article, Nokia 5800 is surely a iPhone killer.

The main advantage is the stylus.

    Thursday, January 1st, 2009 at 10:52 pm

I am using 5800 now, it’s been only for few days. I’ve used my friend’s iPhone 3G 8GB(AT&T service plan) for quite some time.

I have to say that both 5800 and iPhone are two totally different things. They are designed for two different kind of markets.

As far as I’m concerned, Nokia smartphones are more focused on the “business” kind of market; professionals doing business, people that travels a lot and need extreme mobility etc..This means most of the smartphones are designed to help these people doing their jobs by putting business application, PC connectivity software, easy SMS MMS software, e-mail software, video call, 3G(or even now 3.5G), etc..I don’t really feel that Nokia focuses on the entertainment side; well, we can say that Xpress Music is kind of an approach to do more entertainment in Nokia smartphones but still I think that this was not the main focus on designing Nokia’s smartphones.

On the other hand, iPhone is targeted for people who wants more entertainment in the phone. The design of the phone itself gives the sign that this phone is meant to be an entertainment device. Tons of games and entertainment application, superb multimedia and user interface that looks very stylish; these things will satisfy people who look for more entertainment in their smartphones. I assume these people are not professional businessman and don’t really need super SMS and MMS software, extreme mobile email application, or even maybe video call.

I just think that comparing these two will not going to prove which one is the best. I used iPhone for few weeks and I really loved the games; this phone is really designed for entertainment purposes and it does the job very well. I am using the 5800 for a week now and I really think that the SMS, MMS, video call, 3.5G and other mobility application really suits my need in doing business.

Now imagine that you force iPhone to run business applications although you know that it is designed more for style and entertainment..

Imagine that you force 5800 to run extreme entertainment applications although you know the fact that this phone is business-oriented..

Two different things, you will never be able to find which one is better than the other..

I know the terms Xpress Music means more entertainment..Nokia understand this term very well, and it put some flexibilities in entertainment side. But still, the whole idea behind Nokia is business and mobility..

iPhone also has some useful business application available for the users. But still, iPhone is entertainment oriented..

So I would think that 5800 is better for users who seek for a bit more entertainment in business and mobility oriented smartphone and iPhone is better for users who seek more entertainment and multimedia smatphone with just a bit of business tools.

Maybe my ideas were not right, but hey, they’re just not my opinion and I just want to share them here :p

very interesting post you put up there. now, 1.why exactly do people buy phones, is it because there’re expensive or it meets your needs in terms of requirements even if its expensive but atleast meets the needs? 2. now ask the current iphone users (incuding me), if 5800 came in the same time as the iphone which would they have gone for? well, i guess the answer is obvious.

    Hi Friend,
I also think nokia 5800 is better than iPhone. I am a true lover of nokia phones as I have used many of them including various phones of N-series. I have alse used phones of Samsung, Sony, Motorola. BUT one thing I don’t like at all about nokia phones is it’s PROCESSOR, which is very slow compare to iPhone, Samsung, Sony and Motorola phones.

ALL NOKIA PHONES USE A LOW QUALITY PROCESSOR, EVEN NOKIA N-SERIES.
N-96 uses a process of clock speed not more than 400 MHz. Could u belive it ? It’s true.

I think nokia should think to improve its process quality.

Thanks, I think u would also egree with me..

    Hey,

I have used the iPhone as well as the 5800.

Sure the iPhone looks great and all,

BUT after some time, you just dont think it looks all that and you crave for utility.

I think the 5800 still has some way to go before common things like the accelerator function can match upto iPhone, but remember, the iPhone also started with umpteen problems, and is now what it is after more than 5 updates (at least I updated 5 ;-))

Further additions to all the points by you guys above, which make me think that Nokia will be able to come out tops are:

    1. The Video out (obviously after the ability to CAPTURE video in the first place). I find this function very useful as I can watch the same mp4 format movie either while travelling, or when I reach home and the quality is good, with least effort

    2. The small stand that Nokia gave us to put the phone and watch a video. Come on Apple, I could not have thought that you could miss something like this. That when I can only watch movies in landscape mode on the iphone, I think Nokia gets the cake here

    3. Although users dont realize it now, but after the 400 charges that iPhone mentions, it is quite an effort to get the battery changed. I had issues with the battery and so I know.

    4. Finally, Since both are being sold as entertainment units (I saw someone mention that this is a business use smartphone & I disagree - pls see the face - it says EXPRESSMUSIC), how could Apple think of anything except 3.5mm jacks. Kudos to Nokia again

    Friday, January 30th, 2009 at 6:58 pm

Just a couple of more points.

I] If I am not wrong, 5800 isn’t released out everywhere. Both the phones are available in India. The price differentials look something like this:

    iPhone:
    8GB - INR31,000 [~USD633]
    16GB - INR36,100 [~USD736]

    N5800:
    8GB - INR19,100 [~USD389]
    16GB - INR25,000 [~USD510]*

Prices in INR are confirmed, those in USD are calculated @49INR/USD.

*Nokia Concept Store in Delhi say that 16GB is not more than INR6,000 more, and will be available to from February.

II] Indian market is an extremely price sensitive market and this is heavily assisting Nokia in getting a solid response. While the Nokia Concept Store I talked to refused to give away how many handsets are getting sold, they were insistent that they were getting sold like ‘hot cakes’.

III] iPhone in India too has linked up with service providers. Traditionally, ALL of GSM market in India uses phones which are not restricted to one player. When we get a better phone, all we do is take out the SIM card and put it in the new phone and get rid of the old phone by selling it second hand. Nokia maintains sanctity of this rule where its easier for newer products to come and replace their older counterparts - point worth stressing because the purchasing power parity of an Indian isn’t too high; he can’t very easily buy a new phone WITHOUT selling the old handset, but the PPP is high enough to pay the differential price increase for the new phone.

IV] Distribution: Unlike iPhone, Nokia is not only made for ALL GSM providers, but it is also the way they are selling it. iPhone is available at select outlets of the GSM service providers. Nokia is selling through independent franchisees who are purely mobile phone sellers [eg Hotspot]. And these independent people are comparing Omnia, iPhone and 5800. Of the couple I visited, they all are PUSHING for 5800, outlining the drawbacks in other phones. Hence sale is stronger and picking up.

I haven’t even touched or seen a Nokia 5800 in real life but I’ve spent the last couple of days fishing around the internet and even though the 5800 has some minor problems such as processor speed, I think that this does not matter. On a computer, processor speed actually matters but in a phone, who cares? All my phones have been Nokia’s and I never ever had a problem with them.
One thing’s for sure, though, 5800 is the best Nokia by far and is ten times better the the iPhone!!!

There has been some talk in this discussion about the next versions of iPhone keeping up with or even bettering the Tube5800. It is assumed, that in the mean time Nokia will be sitting idle. Which is so wrong!

Check this out, while we were all discussing, Nokia is looking to launch the N97, which does not have the same Entertainment utilities as 5800, but scores on number of other points like camera[5MP], battery, and many more.

So to drive the point, Nokia has a faster phone release cycle time.

    Link: http://www.forum.nokia.com/devices/N97

ps: while, it is worth comparing N97 against the iPhone, don’t miss comparing it with 5800 as well!

first of all nokia has been restricted to put all the software they can on their mobile phones by the fcc. because they’re afraid that it will beat all the u.s. based manufacturer’s.

if you go around the world you’ll see most of the people in asia, europe, australia, canada have nokia’s. nokia’s been in the market far more than the iphone. it’s just fcc restricgted them to show the full potential of they’re mobile phones.

There are two different phone concepts and despite what the stupid 5800 is not a copy of iPhone, it is yet another touch enabled phone.

5800 is cheaper and provides better features than the iPhone (e.g. better camera with high-quality video, copy-paste support, handwriting recognition)

iPhone is expensive even when “subsidised” with a 2 year contract. Its only plus size is the cool touch UI, but you get bored with it in like two minutes.

To all those claiming that iPhone has more appz and games … that is so not true … just visit the numerous sites that relate to the Symbian OS and one will see that it is like the “Linux” of mobile phones when it comes to open platform. So many things to install on the 5800 (i have many installed already and they are the kind of things you want to have on a phone since it is what you carry with you everyday) … imagine carrying a phone and a separate usable digital camera and a usable V8 camcorder and a usable GPS navigator out with you everyday … you won’t have the pockets for these … but with the 5800 … all you need to carry is one light-weight device and you can have all that … by the way, even Garmin XT GPS currently works on it, which is the best GPS navigation to have … even though the already-built-in Nokia Maps is kinda cool too … oh and after v20 firmware update … the 5800 is now just as fast as the iPhone when it comes to interface. But, this phone will not stop here … it will keep getting better and better … going and going … like the Energizer bunny …

    Hi all
I was looking to exchange my Iphone for a nokia 5800,But the thing is,After you jailbreak the iphone. You pretty much have everything beside very little couple of things.Things not on iphone right now are Flash, and 3.0 camera.Other then that it has everything once you have it jailbreak.Ok say you didn’t jail break. The only thing that stopped me from getting a nokia is that iphone has double speed then it.BUT only reason to get nokia for me now is FLAsh and that everyone has iphone and im tired of looking at it:P.Can you guys give me some thought on why get nokia? Battery ,Flash,Camera are already on my mind, what else?

That is what i am saying,OK if you buy an iphone and get it jailbroken(Which everyone who has iphone have done),then you have copy $ paste,Bluetooth coming soon, folders, what else… Awsome short cuts, smoothness, great webbrowser,BUT the HUGE HUGE thing is the mulitouch, seriously that makes loads of difference and lastly the APPS Games are FUN and smooth.I was looking at videos of Nokia and saddly you sometimes see BLOCKS PIXCELS in games because its java.
Nokia has Flash ,Camera and battery mainly.MIND YOU,i really want to buy Nokia AND IM TELLING THIS BECAUSE NO ONE SEEM TO HAVE MENTIONED THIS IPHONE STUFF HERE.I hope N97 comes to the stage.

I used both iPhone and 5800 extensively. I better half owns an iPhone and I own 5800.

I have three complaints about Nokia 5800:

    1) vertical scrolling is awful - a SCROLL BAR on touch screen! how could they make such a huge mistake is beyond me

    2) it’s sluggish. you often see “(no data)” flash across screen before the content is (slowly) drawn on the screen. unprofessional and ugly. i can hear symbian users cry “but it’s faster than any other symbian phone!” - i don’t care, it IS slow, especially drawing icons and lists.

    3) the UI is very ugly compared to iPhone - icons are plain and ugly, themes amateurish. definitely not a phone you want to show off to anyone.

Comparing 5800 and Iphone, i will prefer on iphone not because i’m an Apple fanatic fans or what. Just based on some valid points and potentials.

ROUND 1) User experience - IPHONE

I think people need to change their perspective on Iphone. Actually thinking that it is a phone, i rather think it is an IPOD that can make phone calls. Does that make u feel better?

For a novice player in mobile phone market, sometimes it is hard to please majority especially creating a new concept in mobile industry rather than just Clone one. It lacks of many functionalities eg. Copy&Paste, MMS, Bluetooth file transfer for now, doesn’t mean it won’t in future (or even now, if u choose to mod it)

However, if u comparing side to side by what it has and what it can do to other phone. The experience is totally nice overall.

For example, the “smooth factor”- dragging stops at where exactly u stop, intervals between apps opening is more acceptabe, responsiveness of the touch screen is better.

Software design is uniform and easy to learn (not like 5800, combining touch, finger-nail and stylus inputs mess up the experience most of the time) Besides, Symbian is still buggy after so many years although it is powerful. (Read some news, some ppl installed Win98 on N95)

    Round 2)Size - TIE
I don’t really have any comment on both phones. 5800 is light bcoz it lacks of the scratch resistant glass on the screen, full plastic body. iphone on the other hand, might be solid feeling but making u feel u r holding a solid fragile vase, afraid it will break once it touch the ground when u drop it.

ROUND 3)SW/HW Phone updates - IPHONE
Based on this point, i will pick on Apple products because of their constant products update cycle. Software patches or firmware updates come out frequently. Fix responses are far more better than Nokia phone.

Nokia’s Symbian seems always busy developing new version rather than maintain a nice simple core system that could be upgraded towards perfection. My old E65 so far only received one updates since its release. Might be Nokia’s marketing strategies that cause that, constantly having new phones coming out to market, nobody cares on the old system anyway. Maybe they are improving, yet still need more improvement (eg N95)

    Final words -
There are not only iphone and 5800. If need a better camera quality phone, these two both sucks. If music phone, 5800 still could be considered. If like fun and cool, iphone. If business user, u might need a blackberry.

    Android seems potential…

    Tuesday, March 10th, 2009 at 1:12 am

okay ppl.. u might compare products like these two.. n yeah they are outstanding.. iphone on its own place n nokia on its own.. they both are making products world wide which are reaching the top markets..
These mobile phones have their differences too no doubt.. but look at the future.. mobiles like Iphone and Nokia 5800 gives us a signal on what all mobiles are too come more n more with better options, features etc…
As long as i could say.. i just read a comment from Mikey.. id jus lyk to say tht.. bro maybe u have a phone problem or something.. because i have a nokia 5800 n it dosnt have all these problems beleve me..
for the rest of the people if they talk about graphics and all… then for those who have nokia 5800.. herez a tip for em.. go to settings.. theme.. general.. n then options.. ull c theme effects which is turned off.. turn em on and then u will c the real outcomming of 5800..
    hope u guyz lyk it..

hi all, glad to hear all comparison between 5800xm VS iphone
i’d been using 5800xm nearly 2moths overall it’s worth buying with all fantastic features and tech.
video and sound much clearer comparing oldest nokia version with wide screen and quality speakers.
but when comes to image video and capture, i more prefer sony erricsson with cybershot camera, altough nokia camera provided with carl zeis lenses but still no match with my N70 (2.0Mp) when captured image have to keep still,if move only a bit the image will blurr, i dont know either its my phone problem or other lacks of nokia engineering but it sure frustrated me alot.
one more 5800xm cannot support with many games comparing other nokia phones, im still searching over the web for supported games but still hard to find one suite.
but at last its just my opinion, and for those who are planning to buy one..its a good choice coz worth buying when comes to prices.

    thx..
p/s:sorry if my grammar bad,coz not very good in english

    Thursday, March 12th, 2009 at 12:51 pm

I’m sorry. Considering this ‘review’ is from October last year, I focused mainly on the comments.
As someone who moves in large circles, I’m constantly seeing folks ogle each others’ tech, and I’ve yet to see someone say, “Ooh! Is that a Nokia 5800?!!” On the other hand, even the non-technical people I encounter seem to exclaim “Hey - that’s an iPhone!” and spend forever comparing notes on what apps they’ve installed, whether or not it’s jailbroken, etc. I have yet to hear anyone in a casual setting exclaim anything like “Yeah, it’s an iPhone, but it’s a whopping 133 grams, is a quarter-inch too small and doesn’t support Bluetooth keyboards.” Every single iPhone user I’ve ever met is an advocate (except for strangers on internet comments).

My point: Apple has cornered the market on user-experience and user-acceptance, and capitalizes at ever step they can. Small note on points 11 & 14 above, they don’t count if you include FREE apps from the Appstore. I won’t mention the slew of free apps if you jailbreak the iphone (oops, too late).

Hi All, I’m using my 5800 for over a month now and very happy with it BUT…
Yes it has issues which almost everyone forget to mention here.
I’ve never used an iPhone (even though I’m still considering to buy one) so my experience with the 5800 is completely unbiased. (UK Red on the old firmware still)

So here comes my bug list:
    - I don’t want to repeat Mikey [89] but its a major bug: Vertical Scrollbar
    - Makes things even worse its used everywhere! Even in the menus!!!
    - The phone sometimes completely useless without the stylus.
    - Awful motion sensor which switches sometimes without any good reason.
    - You can turn the motion sensor off but for the phone not for individual apps
    - The screen switch between landscape and standing mode is very slow
    - Actually every screen change (navigating the menus) is slow
    - After changing to landscape mode the hotkey like menu covers 1/4 of the screen why? (By using icons instead of text it shouldn’t be taking more space)
    - Search on the home screen is a joke
    - Galery showing every photo, no folders, no tags no nothing. (8G mem = 16thousand photo!)
    - Photo quality is substandard (discolored grainy)
    - Virtual keyboard failed on So many levels.
    - First of all confusing.
    - on full qwerty Never find special characters.
    - The numeric keys shuffled around (zero to the right?!)
    - No application specific virtual keyboard setup (like in messenger I always want to use the qwerty)
    - Limited character num in writing?! (Yeah this probably app spec. but I couldn’t be able to write a mail in the webbrowser because of this…)
    - If you are unlucky enough to using the full qwerty once the Next time when you need to use keyboard you forced to turn the phone into landsacpe mode. Why?
    - Accept key in the top left corner? Very hard to reach and confusing as well (as every keyboard has the enter to the right)
    - No cancel key
    - Not recognising the touch properly. If you press one virtual key then when you release it you might hit something closer to the bottom. It also goes unnoticed as its below your finger (the higher rows should have a higher priority)
    - Contact screen smart search. Utterly confusing. The most prominent key is the green accept key (which is I don’t know how but at the right place on the bottom right) changing position while you are narrowing the search. The next page button almost unnoticabble… (Have you tried to use this search with Fringe while its updating the user list? Terrible…)
    - Battery indicator broken. One minute its fine then its shutting the phone itself done. Sometimes it warns then goes another hour.
    - No way to switch profile while on the charger. (Well with exspensive paying application you can). On the charges no vibrating effect. But because of the unreliable battery level indicator its always on the charger so missing calls a lot…
    - In general the buttons (especially the menu entries) are not big enough for finger use
    - There is always two mandatory menu options: Show all running apps (white middle hard key so why?), and exit which most of the time scrolled out of screen.
    - No way to kill an application in the task manager (yet again you can with paying application)
    - The hard keys are very hard to press especially after you are used to the typing on the virtual key (Nokia would have been better of to put touch hard keys on the device. Even worse the N97 also comes with these keys…)
    - No built in auto fill forms like word expanding in the virtual qwerty keyborad. (You have to start writing something then go back to the browser if its found any matches if not go back to the virtual keyb…)
    - Application install/uninstall is a major pain. Its throwing so many technical /cryptic / warning info into your face then you think twice before you install anything ever again. (If you are a programmer like me you will understand what the messages are all about but I honestly I don’t give a damn. If you are not a programmer you probably don’t have a clue whats going on anyway)
    - After install you have to find your App run it just to find out that is broken. (90% of apps are broken becase this new 5th platform so new). Then you have to navigate to the insall manager which deeply hidden. Find your freshly installed app then you finally allowed to uninstall it…
    - App manager allows two applications by the same name. Which one do you want to uninstall: hard to decide.
    - Phone memory User Folder completely trashed by different random S60 apps. No standart how to store the App user data.
    - Duplicate numbers under different user names results that the phone not recognising the incoming calls. (Not even giving a hint whats going on!) Even after you clean up your phonebook the call records are not updating. (With a 100 phonebook - hello business users - its impossible to see if the call was important)
    - If you have a meeting and you missed your alarm the first time you come back pick up your phone turn it on if anything happened in the past 10 minutes but you will see as if nothing happened! (yes it will try to ring you later but inbetween two alarms there is no visual indication whats going on)
    - Going back to the last page in the browser is painful.
    .
    .
    .
The list is long and it doesn’t end here.

All in all I think Nokia completely missed the point of touch screen. The input should be easier more natural and more fun! than the old fashioned keyboards…

ok, admin, i was really just about to purchase a iphone when i called my friend to tell him and he asked me if i was crazy. he told me that the 5800tube is just out and that iphone’s “hype” has been tremendously smashed. i was very saddened by this as i just made up my mind to spend all this cash on sumn and then be told not a smart move. so ofcourse being a female and all i whined about the looks (the one i was buying had gold on it, i really love gold pretty phones)and also some of the features i was shown like a gps tracking system these were downloaded by the guy for me, facebook, this neat budget application, a shopping list application, spread sheet ( i didnt actually see this work so not sure if it does and some other cool things, plus it had this cute louis vuitton background in gold which helped me fall desperately for the phone, however i was sent to this site for one reason and that was to convince me that iphone was crap, i admit i share my friends views now but i want to know if nokia has got these cool downloadable gagets and the 5800 aint cute enough why doesnt nokia work on appearance more, the one cute phone well really cute girly phone i saw nokia do was my old 7360, it was also gold, plus why is the 5800 not as slim as the iphone, it looks like a male phone and colors wont do enough to get the cutness im talking about, plus like interm of background downloading or just downloading at all how safe available is that for my 5800. The things that really make me think twice about the my purchase are the fact that the 5800 has 3.2 mp cam i really love taking pictures, video is added tho pic is most impt so cud give or take wit the no video iphone, i love radio phones, i love the file sharing like my inspiron can connect to my phone, i prefer a removale batt since im not in us, please reply.

One important thing that wasn’t mentioned is multitasking. nokia can multitask but iphone can’t do that. checkout google latitude. poor iphone users they have been left out by all smartphone users bec iphone can’t multi task.
Also a lot of softwares in symbian is more cool that iphone and they are free. Check out skyfire which is true browsing experience. Iphone is just plain HTML browsing which is boring……no videos …..no ajax….no java…..which means the websites safari can visit is very LIMITED!!!! add to that posting videos on youtube!!! it’s crippled!useless! just good for games and silly apps like iFart! what a shame.

What the…. all this mention of subpar “processors” in Nokia phones has got me fired up.

    Imagine, for example…

Computer A : Core 2 Quad Extreme 3.6Ghz - Windows Vista (eye candy OS)

    Computer B : Core 2 Duo 2.0 Ghz - MS Windows 7

We surely know the answer here, which computer would perform better ?

The only reason the Iphone has a FASTER processor is because the OS is SLUGGISH.

    wouldn’t you agree ?

all those skeptics, get hold of a nokia 5800xm, try it out. its not slow.

if too many apps are open in the background, close the apps before testing it out. Symbian OS multitasks as good as any multitasking OS.

Some comments, on what the previous poster farybagj has overlooked.

    - I don’t want to repeat Mikey [89] but its a major bug: Vertical Scrollbar
    - Makes things even worse its used everywhere! Even in the menus!!!
    - The phone sometimes completely useless without the stylus.

    * i have only taken out the stylus 3 times in total, i have had the 5800 for 2 months now, and i am a heavy user, esp browsing and texting. Keep using it and you would realize you dont actually need the stylus…

    - Awful motion sensor which switches sometimes without any good reason.
    - You can turn the motion sensor off but for the phone not for individual apps

    * there is a 3rd party app, freeware that allows individual apps to be configured with motion-sensor based screen rotation

    - The screen switch between landscape and standing mode is very slow

    * the new firmware v20 has faster screen rotation from portrait to landscape mode, slightly more accurate too

    - Actually every screen change (navigating the menus) is slow

    * the new firmware v20 has faster menu navigating. but i have to agree the interface being not “fluid motion” like iphone, the animations are a bit sluggish. (i bet the iphone’s faster processor is a major contributor to fluid-motion)

    - After changing to landscape mode the hotkey like menu covers 1/4 of the screen why? (By using icons instead of text it shouldn’t be taking more space)

    * yes, i have to agree the buttons are way bigger that what we would like. but sometimes the designer has to think about big fingers. also, nokia’s 3.2 inch screen is smaller compared the iphone’s 3.5 inch.

    - Search on the home screen is a joke

    * v20 firmware has fixed this, you can switch the individual apps on home/standby screen on and off, including search.

    - Galery showing every photo, no folders, no tags no nothing. (8G mem = 16thousand photo!)

    * yeah, folders are needed. i agree.

    - Photo quality is substandard (discolored grainy)

    * the 5800xm has a higher resolution screen on a 3.2inch LCD, and the iphone has lower resolution on bigger LCD. are you sure the the photo itself is grainy ? send it over to an iphone and have a look at it. Oops… i forgot, iphone doesn’t allow receiving files over bluetooth, use email instead.

    - Virtual keyboard failed on So many levels.

    * you should try typing on an iphone, its no joke either. but the standard keyboard with T9 prediction on the 5800 rocks. i can type as fast as any other nokia phone with buttons. trust me, i text a lot. i would not get a phone that i cant use to text fast.

    - First of all confusing.
    - on full qwerty Never find special characters.
    - The numeric keys shuffled around (zero to the right?!)

    - No application specific virtual keyboard setup (like in messenger I always want to use the qwerty)

    * this is application specific. the screen is too small to have the keyboard appear together with the app. iphone does it because the screen size is bigger. 5800 could do it, it has higher resolution screen, but then its a small screen so you would not be able to see it clearly.

    - Limited character num in writing?! (Yeah this probably app spec. but I couldn’t be able to write a mail in the webbrowser because of this…)

    * are you using the real email website or the mobile version ? the full html version of emails like gmail and yahoo allow for really big text box. you must be writing a novel in your email dude…

    - If you are unlucky enough to using the full qwerty once the Next time when you need to use keyboard you forced to turn the phone into landsacpe mode. Why?

    * obvious the qwerty in portrait would be tiny, unusable

    - Accept key in the top left corner? Very hard to reach and confusing as well (as every keyboard has the enter to the right)
    - No cancel key

    - Not recognising the touch properly. If you press one virtual key then when you release it you might hit something closer to the bottom. It also goes unnoticed as its below your finger (the higher rows should have a higher priority)

    * hmmm… i dont face this problem, anyway, you should try the new firmware v20, its much more sensitive. at least nokia doesn’t SELL its new OS versions… see what apple is doing for ipod touch, you gotta buy the OS…

Terrible…)

    * yeah, i agree, they could have done a better job with contact search.

    - Battery indicator broken. One minute its fine then its shutting the phone itself done. Sometimes it warns then goes another hour.

    * battery indicator loses accuracy when you are using high drain apps like wifi or GPS. even the mighthy iphone is not that accurate when it comes to battery meter. its the technology behind lithium ion batteries. i am not being biases, but try using a LG phone before you complain about battery meters. but nokia has an app for power profiling, you can see the power usage for each app. google it.

    - No way to switch profile while on the charger. (Well with exspensive paying application you can). On the charges no vibrating effect. But because of the unreliable battery level indicator its always on the charger so missing calls a lot…

    * the lithium ion battery in the 5800 is quite reliable, it lasts too. after about 10 complete charge cycles the battery’s maximum performance is unlocked, the battery charges to its full capability and lasts longer too. new lithium ions are not conditioned yet, they might not perform. anyway, the 5800 uses a removable battery, and its cheap and readily available everywhere, so dont complain.

    - In general the buttons (especially the menu entries) are not big enough for finger use

    * you can change the font size, hence changing the menu entry size, dude, you must be like 7 feet 2…

    - There is always two mandatory menu options: Show all running apps (white middle hard key so why?), and exit which most of the time scrolled out of screen.

    - No way to kill an application in the task manager (yet again you can with paying application)

    * there is more than 1 freeware that allows managing tasks and many more. google it.

    - The hard keys are very hard to press especially after you are used to the typing on the virtual key (Nokia would have been better of to put touch hard keys on the device. Even worse the N97 also comes with these keys…)

    * the keys are a bit hard, i have to agree, softer keys or no keys would be better. but sometimes, hardware keys are necessary, even the iphone has one, a softer and nicer one though.

    * i think legal applications are easy to install… its the unsigned, illegal ones that are troublesome… anyway, installing an app on a iphone isnt a breeze either… last week one of my friend gave up after trying to set up his new iphone after trying for a couple of hours… even though the iphone’s user interface is intuitive and user friendly, the backend is not. its messy.

    - App manager allows two applications by the same name. Which one do you want to uninstall: hard to decide.

    * sometimes its just components dude. there may be minor differences. as far as i know, the symbian os will ask whether you want to upgrade/replace the existing app. it will not install 2 copies of the same app

    - Phone memory User Folder completely trashed by different random S60 apps. No standart how to store the App user data.

    * agree, some apps dont follow the preset app data rules
but it doesnt cause any problems with how the OS runs.

    - Duplicate numbers under different user names results that the phone not recognising the incoming calls. (Not even giving a hint whats going on!) Even after you clean up your phonebook the call records are not updating. (With a 100 phonebook - hello business users - its impossible to see if the call was important)

    * haha, yeah all nokia does this… its just a phone with a software… what you expect, most nokia freaks would know this issue… its the user who is at fault, not the software / hardware

    - If you have a meeting and you missed your alarm the first time you come back pick up your phone turn it on if anything happened in the past 10 minutes but you will see as if nothing happened! (yes it will try to ring you later but inbetween two alarms there is no visual indication whats going on)

    * yeah, they should fix that…

    - Going back to the last page in the browser is painful.

    * its a pain, but there is the multi selection page where u can go back more than one page, even go 5 pages back… its useful sometimes…

I know its not perfect phone, but for a first from nokia in this form factor and new OS, its beats the crap out of many phones in many sections, including the iphone…

But if you ask me, iphone is beautiful thing that works, with lots of eye candy. It gives you that satisfaction, smooth edges, flat surface, curvy, slim…

But if you are a hardcore user, Nokia 5800XM is the way to go.

the nokia 5800 has a FUNKY stick to press buttons with so that you don’t have to dirty the screen.
the iphone is too expensive. too wide. very hard to text with.. i mean could those letter keys BE ANY SMALLER.
whereas with nokia 5800 there are 4 different keypad options.
and it actually fits in your pocket.

AND TO ALL YOU PEOPLE WITH IPHONES, YOU CAN BANG ON ABOUT YOUR STUPID APP STORE AS MUCH AS YOU LIKE, BUT FACE IT: YOUR PHONE DOESN’T HAVE A COOL BUTTON PRESSING STICK!

Okay, I’ve been looking into this phone for more than a month now. I’m pretty much set on buying this phone, but I’m still looking into my options. I’m coming from a Nokia 6288 which I’ve been pretty pleased with since I like the aesthetics of it (slide phone). However, it doesn’t have any of the new features that’s offered in phones nowadays like wifi. I know touch screen is probably the way to go for future phones, but I’m skeptical on the response. I’ve been hearing mixed comments about Nokia’s resistive screen. Do you have to use your nails or would it respond to finger touches as well?

“* this is application specific. the screen is too small to have the keyboard appear together with the app. iphone does it because the screen size is bigger. 5800 could do it, it has higher resolution screen, but then its a small screen so you would not be able to see it clearly.”
^Jananan, I’m not sure what you mean. If you use a messenger app, you will not be able to type in full screen qwerty?

Also, how does the 5800 compare to say.. HTC Magic which is supposedly going to be the new T-mobile G2.

    ~Thanks

I just upgraded my phone’s firmware to v 20.0.012 and it works great. Now, the browsing is fast, (well, I still have to find out what other advantages it makes) but what’s best is that I can now capture image and video through the secondary camera!

This is a great post and I hope all gadget junkies here in the Philippines would read this.

    I don’t have an iphone so I can’t compare the two but…

Here, some people prefer iphone for its sleekness and the fact that of owning this very expensive mobile phone is a great status symbol. They boast it everywhere – showing that they are “can-afford-people” (hahaha! How bitter I am). But they overlook the functionality of N5800xm. I love using N5800xm for communicating, browsing the net, listening mp3 music or fm station etc.

The truth is I’m planning to buy an iphone though I already had N5800xm because of this “pressure” (now, am I letting myself a victim of this “ethos”). How pathetic.

I intend to buy the N 5800 (before I used the N 5300), however I’m still confused wether or not to sell my old phone. It’s an old mate, I’ve used it for 2 years. I could just repair it (the LCD was broken by accident).

I hope N 5800 could get cheaper soon :P btw why doesn’t it have the white version? I mean it will be totally cool. Looks minimalistic.

Hay everyone iv read every one of your comment and you all have different views on this subject.

i have use both the iphone and the 5800, ok iv also had the nokia n96-8gb and i really liekd it but when it came to touch screen i tried them both.
The iphone i found hardto handle it was to big to hold in one hand and didnt alwyas unlock when i wanted it 2 :( The Iphone has lots of apps but far to many of them and some are plain rubbish like the ones you see on tv. Are people so lazy they cant work out how to split a bill between 4 people ?? or find a taxi ?? i mean come on.

But i did find some of the apps alot of fun to use but as a phone itself it lacks alot of things i need like quick easy uploading of music and other files somehting the 5800 does with ease.

    Now for the nokia 5800.
I have the blue version new from nokia and it was amazing, its naturly in my hand i can use it with only my thumb and easy to unlock. Basic setup is like other nokia phones main menu leading to other places which is good and bad in itself.

having a camera of 3.2 was ok but the n95-8gb had 5 mp so i was dissapointed their :( The reaction of the touchscreen was really good it didint load until i took my finger of the screen making it nearly impossable to accidently select somthing i didnt want.
picute.video quality is outstanding even plays flv files two :D

Ok so i didnt say much about the iphone compared to the 5800 and their is a good reaosn for that……the iphone sucks, ok it has lots of fun apps but lacks even the basics every other mobile has even if you dont need or use them its godo to have just incase.

for practicle use the 5800 is a must have for anyone with shortcuts to contacts and other features, not many apps but the ones they have for waht you need

Iphone is good easy to answer calls and has great movment sensor but to many apps that kids would use more than an adult and it would be really embaressing looking at your phone to find a taxi or work out a simple sum.

Nokia is not a iphone killer becuase its not ment for little kids Nokia is on a different level to Apple, they need to stop thinking computers and more mobiles for the adverage guy which they failed here sorry iphone lovers its fun but not a true mobiel phone.

sorry for my crap spelling lol

Concerning Symbian you should be aware that you cannot easily install freeware applications because of the extremely complicated signing process.
Granted - signing is a useful security measure for the casual user but it also keeps you from installing a lot of useful freeware applications. Opensigned is not an option for many applications because you cannot give the application sufficient permissions there.

Symbian uses full DRM to limit your rights on your *own* phone. Its DRM for software - just say *no* to this like you do for MP3-DRM! You are completely dependent on Symbian’s graciousness.

I have bought a 5800 a week ago but will give it back and buy a G1 instead because of these restrictions.

the iphone is shit period i had both iphone 2g and 3g. iphone was 1st released when 3g was already out on the market for most cellphone makers.then they rip people off by releasing a 3g compatible iphone with slight changes. stuck with att unless you get it unlock and even then you cant use apps store without jailbreaking. at 1st it seems like a nice phone till you really need power on the go, the iphone lacks aot of things, for example you will never get the same apps or even close to what you would get on a nokia high end phone. people who love apple will jump off a bridge for them lollll. you people are sick. open your eye’s there have always been phone with the same features as iphone. its just a company like apple who make computer released a phone that runs mac os but will never function the same as a mac when you think about it. the games on the phone suck, everything for apple cost to much for what it is. nice screen, pretty icons. wow. crapy camera with no flash, no flash support for the web, no stereo bluetooth. i should say no bluetooth anything. i can name a million issue’s. people who have the iphone don’t even use it for nothing more than email, web, music, lets be serious here. iphone is not in the same league as nokia, should not even be pictured beside it. loll and im serious. i now only use nokia and htc phones will never touch an apple phone ever again. the apple phone should be for females only not for a real man or power user.

and with each update they software overclock the cpu more i learned that cause i paid close attention to everything. people thought it moved faster because of the updates which really were not much of an update more than adding things and locking the phone down more. from 400mhz to 450mhz, the funny thing is the cpu speed is really 620mhz wow apple is a joke. so everytime you think your update makes your iphone faster its really not. that speed was cut down by apple.

i’m not picking hairs or anything like that, i have the Iphone, and i love it, just because i think it’s beautiful, it’s got some serious flaws in design, and it’s mainly the camera issues that annoy me the most.
haven’t seen this new fandangled nokia, so can’t compare, but on a general basis, nokias annoy me anyway, with layout and what not.

wow, it took me such a long time to read through all the comments and feedbacks and i do agree with them. In my opinion, the Iphone was successful because they had came out with the ipod touch previously which made the company famous , in that sense. As a owner of a Nokia 5800, i would say it is much better in terms of style and shape. The Nokia uses a resistive touchscreen therefore i would say that the Iphone is better in this way. The first time when i heard about the Iphone 3G i thought it would have a camera at the front but it turned out to be CRAP!! The nokia has a good user interface which makes easy for us to type etc. I do agree that Iphone is stylish and all, but in terms of basic features, the Nokia has it all. Apple should have thought about this matter. And to buy an Iphone, i had to wait in-line for 18 hours which is ridiculous. I would recommend the Nokia XM5800 to all of you!!

In my opinion nokia is superior than the iphone. I had an iphone before. I was excited bec it looks good, cute icons etc. After 3 months of using it I got frustrated. I have to charge the battery very often and the fact that the battery is not removable made me mad at apple. I surfed the net and I can’t watch cnn videos so I got frustrated again. I was excited to check out the app store to see some cool apps. I found dice app… no purpose just roll the dice then what? iFart ?? what a joke. there are tons of useless apps like these in the app store. I looked for cool apps like navigation app, nothing, a better browser app, nothing, modem tethering app, nope. I learned apple doesn’t want these in the app store so I got mad at apple even more. Then I learned it couldn’t multitask because I have to exit the app before opening another. Then I said what a piece of junk is this thing. if I just want to listen to music or play videos why do I need this expensive phone. It’s useless to me. Then I found nokia, I can surf the net via skyfire just like the desktop, I use it as a modem to my notebook, GPS, all iphone can do and a lot more with multitasking! So if you like the iphone then you are not a gadget person…you are so shallow in technology….

Beside above mention, I like to point out somethings good of iPhone 3G, Nokia 5800 XM is not that perfect, and others manufacture touch phone is not that bad also. Below is my opinion splitting to two part.

    iPhone is better than 5800:
Speed - definitely iPhone, it is the smoother phone ever done.
Touch - multi-touch technology is unbeatable at the moment. You cannot get such feeling using 5800, 5800 cannot do what you touch is what you get. Even my Samsung Pixon touch is better than Nokia 5800.
Slimmer - Ya Nokia 5800 is lighter but the weight is too high, 15.5mm (oh no! I won’t buy any phone thicker than 15mm). For me 5800 is bulky.
Future Firmware UpdatesEvery new version iPhone software came with new functionality. (This never happen to Symbian or any phones which normally will only include bugs fix)

    5800 is better than iPhone:
Camera - definitely iPhone camera suck!
LCD - 5800 resolution is great and color is vibrant.

    Both phone equal
3rd party programBoth is equally a lots to choose from.
Music PlayerBoth equally having decent player with great sound output.

I bought 5800 2 days ago and do not have time read any instrution yet. I have to handover the apartment to some client, so we are checking if the wireless was working. I had no idea how to do it on my phone at that time. It took me 1 minute to log on to the internet but the client who has IPHONE for a long time could not figure out at all how to do it on his IPHONE.

Many People just buy iphone because it is like a new trend now especially in Thailand but do not really know how to use it.

Thanks for sharing all the info about both phones.

I have quite odd reason why I checked out this site out yesterday. My workmate, couple of floors up, bought a 5800 in November, and being a real Nokia freak he was showing it to everybody. After all these months I thought I should replace my aging N95 with 5800 too.

So yesterday afternoon I called him, but got only his assistant, told her I’d really want to try out his 5800 and see what he has on it, and she says:”No, he has been iPhone user for 4 months already, that iPod Touch you might have seen him using is actually an iPhone, haven’t you noticed”.

Damn, somebody must have paid him off to switch, nah, he needs to keep his face more than money. So finally I got to talk to him this morning and hear his expected poor excuses: “Well, 5800 is a good phone, every engineer will find the specs awesome, but in reality it’s still a first generation touch phone from Nokia, and it just didn’t measure up against the iPhone in usability and software quality”.

My next question was, who was the idiot that gave him his iPhone as a Christmas present:”Oh, nobody. Our company’s bought several of these for testing, and they will start getting them for the management and sales people in May. It turns out iPhone is really good business phone. Our main concern was the special multiple languages requirement in our custom apps, but it will be taken care of. Also the screen could be bigger, but the pinch/tap zoom seems to compensate it well enough”.

There goes my 5800, I used it only once for 2 minutes (in November), found it to be slick and nicely built, maybe a bit slow, touch screen could have been better, but I thought it was good enough for my use.

I’ll be waiting the next 5800 model (unless company gives me iPhone), after all, wasn’t it one of the Nokia bosses that said: “This is not our iPhone killer, just the first touch phone to check how the market responds”.

One advantage in the iPhone is the dragging and scrolling. This has a much more fluent control and allows for easy ’swiping’.

Despite this I would still favour the 5800 in any circumstance.

I’m using the 5800xm for 3 months now, and have upgraded the firmware. The speed has increased and I’m totally loving my tube!

What I bothers me (a little) is the lack of games to support the touchscreen UI and I would prefer the screen to be a tad wider than 3.2″. and also, I do hate the “confirm” button to be too high up when typing smthg.

But like oh! oh!, I still have plans to get my first iPhone soon, not because of the peer pressure etc but because of the attractive data plan that came bundled with the only telco selling iPhone in my country. I will wait until they unveil the new iphone at the WWDC in June, or listen to feedback on their new OS first, just to be safe.

For those who are torn between buying an iPhone or the tube, I would say, buy an iphone for its aesthetics and “status symbol” but get the 5800xm for its functions at a wayyyy cheaper price tag.

Quite a surprise here this morning, had introduction to the iPhone and how it will be tied into company services and management. The first line from the presenters lips said it all: “We will move from ‘mobile phone with some computer like functions’ to ‘handheld computer with mobile phone functions’, to improve our productivity”. Immediately after that was said I heard: “Great, games, yipee!” from the audience.

After seeing the presentation and trying out the official company iPhone version, I have to say ‘WOW’. Some of the features will not work with 2.0 (shown was 3.0 version), and they might even require the next generation (faster) iPhone, but, BUT! Nokia better come up with something hot fast.

What was interesting, they showed what could be done with competing phones and platforms, not much, they are all “poor man’s iPhones”.

One of the really cool things was Bluetooth conferencing, other one about the kind of accessory will be available for the dock connector, then; extra battery - very cool, just like a back cover, no need to shut down iPhone, just slap it on and triple the run time; Push services -awesome, and many more.

In the end the presenter said: “By the way, all the pictures were taken with iPhone”. Huh? But everybody has said the camera sucks, then I realized all the photos were taken in good lighting. My N95 takes good pics too but shows considerable noise in low light.

I didn’t even know that we had internal department developing for iPhone, and yes, there was no Apple person around to create an extra reality distortion field.

The kind of good news is that, me as a bean counter of some sort, will also get an iPhone, but probably just the current generation, after the first wave guys get their 3.0 phones as upgrades.

Nice job admin great blog… for me it was love at first site for the 5800 and the more I use it the more I love it. I don’t know if you guys have read the news of Picsel technologies suing the apple iphone for “stealing” their patent technology of data rendering. If apple looses the lawsuit, the iphone for sure will loose its “fluidy” UI.

    Saturday, April 18th, 2009 at 2:29 pm

Cloudmaster took me here, so I just update the iPhone part without reading the comments. There seems to be a lot of old info about iPhone.

1,2,3. iPhone/iPod Touch is a handheld computer with bigger multitouch glass screen, I haven’t heard anybody complaining about resolution or even mentioning it, but I’m pretty sure Apple will upgrade the screen in the next iPhone version, so they can say: “Yeah, that old iPhone screen sucks, but the new one”.

    4. Storage: 8GB seems to be enough for most people, I had problems with my Communicator memory cards, so I prefer built in memory.

You might need 16GB if you use iPhone as a wireless HD (DataCase app) and move big files. For movies 8GB is enough, iTunes will auto sync and swap the stuff you have already watched. My former workmate has thousands of books and owners manuals on his iPodTouch, still lot of space left. (But wait Apple to announce bigger memory iPhones:”Old ones have so little memory, they suck, buy the new one”).

    5. Input methods: finger, (Pogo) stylus, handwriting, swipe (40 words per minute with ShapeWriter)

    6. Features, a lot more than in 5800, and more coming with 3.0 software update in June 2009 or before. Over 10000 apps specialized custom apps. Even more features coming with 3.0 when the dock connector will be opened to 3rd party developers.

    7. Hundreds of colors available through cases, covers, stick-on’s, tons of other accessories.

    8. Battery life up to 3 weeks, prices start from $5 for emergency batteries, snap-ons from $20, solar chargers, docks, so many.. The built in battery will outlast the Phone, at least with iPods that seems to be the case. You will buy a new one before the battery is getting too weak.

Battery life comes very important when you play games for hours, one friend of mine has a cool custom made iPhone game case with build in battery and gets whole day of heavy gaming action out of it.

    9. Camera: more pixels would be nice, I guess (available in the next gen iPhone). The real problem is low light performance, which will always be bad in mobile phones, unless you start with a camera and add phone function in it. iPhone has lot of apps to “photoshop” the pictures, a nightshot stabilizer app, and lot of funny apps (check out the Wobble)

10,11. Video recording with jailbrake iPhone, wait for 3.0 update

    12. OVI = poor man’s iTunes, but the Comes with Music is a good if you are into music and basically just need a phone (and can find all the music you need from there).

13,14 iPhone has Voice recording, voice and picture dialing apps for free or heart breaking 0.99 cents.

15, Safari is much more useful web browser, no flash though, 3.0 maybe? Adobe has it ready.

    16. No FM, unless your station is on netradio, which there are thousands on iPhone. iPhone can play any users shared iTunes library over the air or WiFi. I have used FM on my Nokia phone, but it’s not something I would say a “killer app”, it doesn’t work well most of the time.

    17. Bluetooth > 3.0 update
    18. Messaging > 3.0 update

    19. Nokia 5800 seems pricey for what it offers, but is good as a phone. You are stuck on the same old operating system and the plasticky, but very high quality case.

    20. Nokia has questionable reputation for writing operating system / SDK software, even less experience with touch based handheld computers = interface designs.

Nokia 5800 is not a “iPhone killer” wait for their next model, and hope the best. Never underestimate what Nokia can come up with.

Yassef #17 says iphone is better because a lot of next version coming can make it better so it’s better right now. What kind of justification is that? Maybe at that time when your iphone will be better all other phones will be a lot better also. That’s a true statement isn’t it? I owned an iphone before a lot of stuff you mentioned can only be believed by an iphone lover like you.

in reply to yassef, let’s just stick to CURRENT MODEL and SOFTWARE, not “wait for 3.0 update” or “next gen iPhone”, it’s been 6 months and it is still the same issue… future iPhone vs Nokia 5800

    FOR F*** SAKE!!!

    Hi gyus!

Just need to say that although a HUGE iphone enthusiast (I had set eyes on it since the pre-sale release of the introductory video by SJ - which I watched with wide open eyes and literally drooling…), I was held back by whispers and screams about poor battery performance, lock-ups and crashes and of course the non-replaceable battery and the locked option…
To make matters worse, a workmate showed up one day with an ipod touch, which made my need to get it even stronger…
Anyway, something at the back of my head kept stopping me from getting an iphone and then I saw it…
On a trip abroad, I set my hands on the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic and although impressed, I thought of it as another iphone lookalike.
Being a Nokia user (used a 6230i for ages) but also an SX1 user (remember those?) I wished that Nokia would provide better contacts and file management (SX1 was a symbian smartphone), a better camera, , a better browser, wifi, more applications…
Finally, the day came when, about 2 weeks ago I finaly bought the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic Red. I actually went for the blue, but when I put my SIM in, it just wouldn’t start properly, kept flashing and popped a message in German about taking it for service! Truly disappointed, I had it exchanged for a red (which I found slightly better-looking) which started up perfectly.
Very very pleased with all features I have used/checked so far, a bit turned-down by the camera performance in the dark and also picture colors but hey! can’t have EVERYTHING, right?
Verdict: I like the iphone but I’m glad I got the Nokia 5800.
What I like the most? handwriting recognition. Works almost flawlessly both in English and in Greek and I tend to use it a lot instead of texting SMSs.

Thanks for letting me share this with U and keep up the good work!

“6. Features, a lot more than in 5800, and more coming with 3.0 software update in June 2009 or before. Over 10000 apps specialized custom apps. Even more features coming with 3.0 when the dock connector will be opened to 3rd party developers.”
-please… the biggest things in 3.0 are already standard on many 3g phones… ie ‘cut & paste’, ‘3g tethering’, ‘a2dp’, ‘mms’. It took apple 2 years to realise these features are important to consumers… that is pathetic.

“7. Hundreds of colors available through cases, covers, stick-on’s, tons of other accessories.”
-cases and stuff can be bought for any phone in the market today in any colour shape or form. its nothing special… besides the iphone doesnt even have a loophole to tie on mobile accessories…

“10,11. Video recording with jailbrake iPhone, wait for 3.0 update”
-jailbreaking ur phone is illegal (stated by apple as well). again with 3.0 ey? well hello to pretty much every phone with a camera except the iphone(currently), video recording is already here and has been for many years… plus, you cant video conference with the iphone… every 3g phone ever released has video conferencing capabilities…

“13,14 iPhone has Voice recording, voice and picture dialing apps for free or heart breaking 0.99 cents.”
-again this comes standard with heaps of phones… why pay for such standard features…

“20. Nokia has questionable reputation for writing operating system / SDK software”
-nokia doesnt make their os’s, nokia uses Symbian OS.

dood, you have to stop refering to 3.0… everything ‘feature’ on the 3.0 is already here on every mid to high-end mobile phone. even with 3.0, the iphone is still lacking…

“Nokia 5800 is not a “iPhone killer” wait for their next model, and hope the best. Never underestimate what Nokia can come up with.
    ”
-its deemed iphone killer because of its xpressmusic label… and its features are nearly the same (ie touch screen, wifi, etc… btw nokia 5800 does have multi touch, dispite its resistive screen, heaps of videos on youtube…).

anyway apple has made a nice feature packed phone that actually works pretty much perfectly. since that side has been ironed out very well, they need to concentrate on the phones spec’s. Just have your fingers crossed that the next iphone released wont be a generation behind the rest… (ie the camera, bluetooth, etc)

ALL I CAN SAY IS NOKIA 5800 CAN MULTITASK IPHONE CAN’T. THIS IS A BIG DEAL FOR ME. FOR EXAMPLE I’M CHATTING WITH SOMEBODY USING PALRINGO AND I CAN LISTEN TO LASTFM AT SAME TIME WHILE I CHECK MY EMAIL ALSO WHILE PALRINGO BEEPS IN THE BACKGROUND TO TELL ME THERE’S A MESSAGE. AND I DOWNLOAD PODCAST AT THE SAME TIME. ISN’T THAT HIGH TECH!!! IPHONE CAN’T DO THIS!!!!!! YOU HAVE TO CLOSE AN APP FIRST BECAUSE OPENING ANOTHER. IPHONE SUCKS!!!! THE SIGNAL IS BAD IN THE LOWER BASEMENT WHILE NOKIA IS STILL FULL BARS.

I have not owned the IPHONE. But just bought the Nokia 5800 (I live in uk) on vodafone on a cashback offer which works out to be around 100 GBP. can you tell me is there any way i can knock atleast a little of price on IPHONE????
I only would have dreamt of owning an iphone, but NOkia made my dreams realistic with their realistic price. There are some arguments that Iphone build quality is good, who cares? I change my mobiles every year and you got a warranty for that year.
But I would say both Nokia and Iphone have their merits and demerits. Applications available on nokia or less coz its not been there in the market for a while. But the screen resolution is amazing. I had just finished watching a hour long video on Iplayer, I bet you like it.
I only say stop comparing the camera capabilities. IPHONe and NOKIA 5800 both suck on this. I have a LG Renoir, these two are no where near the comparison to renoir.
I strongly believe its all boils down to this….
    what are you interested in
    1. camera
    2. applications
    3. music
    4. size
    5. AFFORDABILITY

For me, NOkia 5800 is still heads up. I feel IPHONE is like a AUDI or Lamborghini car, where they maintain the steady price and causes illusions in the minds of hte people that they dont depreciate as much as their competitors over the time….
But Nokia 5800 since its induction had already shed around 35-40% on its price making it more affordable to reaching far outer sections of the audience. Iphones rate fixture sux….

Windows Mobile with Microsoft Voice Commander 1.6 can speak the name of each caller, you can dial with name, it reads SMS, you can ask it to play any music by speaking the name of the band stored in the SD card (say for ex. PLAY QUEEN). I hate MS and I would like to have all those things in another OS, is there something similar for Symbian of Ihpone?

I’d just like to say “thanks” to all the people contributing to this thread, and to ‘Admin’ for the initial list of differences. I’m about to change from Sony-Ericsson, and fancy a touch-screen. I’d been considering the iPhone (mainly due to hype), but would need to switch providers to O2 (I live in UK). Having stumbled on a deal for the 5800 - I’m very much swayed.

    1. I can negotiate a deal with current provider.
    2. The 5800 will be FREE on my contract (iPhone is not).
    3. If I decide to switch provider in 12 months (yes 12! - whereas iPhone is minimum 18 month) - I can unlock the 5800 to any network without it being locked down by ‘big brother’.

    :)

Myself, being an ex-iphone user, can say that the iphone has major dissapointments. No flash, horrible camera, and no bluetooth transferring? C’mon people. We are in the 21st century. Where our lives revolve around internet. And still no flash for a phone costing 600$ unlocked?
Plus, the iphone app store has rather “boring” apps that get old. I owned fieldrunners, touchgrind and even pocket god, but none of them was worth the 3$
Plus, the 5800 has a keyboard that vibrates when you touch each letter in landscape mode. Thats plain out awesome compared to the non landscape mode iphone.

Obviously, you guys didn’t try the iphone, or nokia in question!
there is no comparison, Iphone is elegant and totally awesome,
nokia is left in the middle ages with it’s symbian, it’s just not cool enough or fast enough, I am not talking about a single model, not to mention that the touch screen in the 5800 is way “less sensitive” than the iphone,
iphone makes you feel smart, if you can’t afford it, there’s no need to be nasty, just say it’s awesome, but my budget allows me a 5800:)

Pay no consideration to the currency but where I live the 8 GB iPhone costs 850 and the 16 GB iPhone costs 1100. The 5800 costs 415, that’s more than half the price - screw the technical comparisons, which Apple doesn’t compare to either -> nuff said!

Yes the features on the Nokia 5800 are obviously advanced as it was recently released. Think about how long ago the iPhone was released! Also the iPhone just looks and feels more solid and classy. The Nokia 5800 feels a bit cheap and plastic-ish. Don’t get me wrong, I think the Nokia 5800 is a killer phone with a full house of specs but Nokia still has a bit to learn about style and quality… Just thought I would add my 5cents worth.

What I am really looking forward to is Nokia 5800 coming with built-in Skype.

In India, almost all phones are sold unbundled with operator — you can move to any operator while keeping your phone (and all that tons of your data). It is only Apple that has gone and tied up with operators and is selling their iPhones locked with operator network. Here the locked iPhones are selling for $700! There is a difference in the intentions of the two companies — Apple wants to gang up with operators to exploit the users and Nokia intends to build an open, tether free ecosystem. Ultimately, when you want to make friends with someone, what counts is their intentions.

Well. IPhone 3G’s features are also very limited when compared to eg. Nokia N95 which was released in 2007. Actually iPhone’s features are very limited when compared to almost any Nokia phone released during last 10 years.

I own a Nokia 5800. I am happy to own it. I wanted to buy an iPhone but I didn’t because I need a complete device: I really need to have on the same device at least a good phone, a good gps device (probably I will change the Nokia maps with a dedicated satnav software) and a relatively decent photo camera because I travel a lot. I also needed the freedom of puting any sim card in my phone because I can be in another country every month. Actually the gps made me to buy Nokia not iphone because at iphone you have to have an active internet connection for google maps but Nokia can work as a properly gps device if you pay or if you manage to install a dedicated software (something like navmii or nuvmii - I don’t know for sure).
But there will be no iPhone killer ever. iPhone represents not a device but a concept. I still want to buy an iPhone but probably I will buy a Blackberry Storm. My impulse to buy an iPhone is not related to it’s features it is just an impulse. IPhone will crash any competitor because it is an image, it is like a very beautiful woman that everybody want.
I don’t have any Mac products but I always want one. It is like that bitten apple that they have it as logo - the forbidden fruit - excellent marketing, nice design, good human psychology - it doesn’t matter how good is the product if that product will be only satisfactory.

First of all, forgive my english typing mistakes because i’m not an english speaker.

    (i own a Nokia 5800 XM)

There are people who buys a phone because it looks pretty and other who buys a phone because it have great functionality (that’s me)

I need to surf the web, use bluetooth, save my messages, good battery, and this Nokia gives me all of that in a good price.

I believe all depends on what you need of your phone, i’m totally agree with the 20 (and more) reasons given in this post, i think the only one i don’t care too much is the difference between the screen resolution of this 2 phones because is barely recognizable. But if we talk about functionality, then the Nokia 5800 XM is better than this latest iPhone, and that’s why i prefer this Nokia, and i say latest because we all know that this companies always have an as under the hose, for example, if the iPhone doesn’t have a better camera it is because they are not interested on that right now, lets wait for the next iPhone generation. They are not going to show all of his cards now, just look at the Nokia N97 specifications and you’ll see is far better than the 5800XM, and i’m sure they (Apple and Nokia) already have, some monsters phones well hidden waiting the precise moment to launch them into the market and keep the competition, a competition which will never end, not only between Apple and Nokia but between every cell phone companies, and who knows, maybe in 5 years a well known or an unknown company launch a phone beating Nokia and Apple. Technology advances really fast and it’s a little bit pointless (just a little bit) to argue for something that in 6 months will change, or even become so much upset (like Andy at the beginning of this review) for something like this.

So you buy what you like more together with what you need more, and enjoy it while it last, because in 1 year for now, you will have another phone, and wont remember about this Nokia and this iPhone.

Just bought this phone, but only because it was cheap and will do until Apple release the new iPhone in July. Most of the complaints here can be solved with .99c apps.

To me; the most important thing in a laptop is the touchpad. Full stop. When I see videos of the iphone scrolling, page swipes etc, I know my Nokia 5800 sux in comparrison. Heck, I’ve had it over a week and still can’t easily scroll to a specific contact and stop the name on the page.

How do you compete with the pinch function of zooming in Safari. You don’t.
Anyhow, happy with the Nokia for the moment, but will bin it (Give it to my daughter) for the iphone as soon as it comes out. And I’ve never owed one before.

I own an iPhone 3G and I have looked at many other communicators, including Nokia 5800, and I guess you’re finally right: iPhone sucks.

Even the famous multitouch screen is not as good as I thought previously. It reacts when you touch it, not when you press it, and this feels strange, actually. It reacts on even a negligible random touch and this annoys sometimes. Also, you cannot use it with stilus.

That fancy multitouch feature when you can zoom or rotate an image using two fingers is not practical in real life. When I tried to use Google Maps outdoor, I was surprised that it is totally impossible using it with one hand: you always need both. Good old simple buttons would be much more convenient.

The dragging lists are also not so handy. There are no scrollbar you can drag. If a list is long enough, you’ll be looking as a carpenter whittling a wood bar while you’ll be scrolling down the list.

The same thing with the main menu: if there are too many applications, it becomes inconvenient. By the way, the number of installed application is limited to 9 screens in the main menu.

The another well-known flaw is that iPhone is very slippery and instantly becomes soiled as fast as you get it with you hands or hold it at your cheek.

Actually, the only good thing in iPhone is that it looks unordinary and cool (when it’s not soiled with someone’s clammy hands, heh) and has fancy stylish animated UI. That’s all.

There are a couple of things that I strongly dislike in Nokia 5800, though: poor hand-made-looking Symbian UI that is totally borrowed from non-touchscreen devices and absolutely not optimized for touchscreen, and a bit slow screen redraw that makes UI less responsive.

Anyway, I’m getting tired of my iPhone and thinking of a replacement.

i have the 5800 for the fact it costs less and is a very good phone with lots of features ,but i have to say the iphone is the best phone you can get even though it misses some basic functions.

this was the coolest post i read about 5800 on the net..may b i can find more about it on net but there is no sign of such posts about iphone..
i hav a 5800 and i realy like it..i think it is much better than dat fu**in iphone..
nokia 5800 has a much better and faster processor than the iphone..
the new n97 is far more better than dat iphone..
i hav compared the two phones with my eyes..5800 has much advanced sensors..we can even update the software..n i dun think it is possible for i phone..
there is no reason for ne1 to say iphone is much better than 5800..
it is really n iphone killer..
    if ne1 has..m w8in for the post..

    Hi guys,

I’m a Nokia 5800 user and I must say that it is way better than the iPhone. I think, the reason why people say iPhone is still “the best” is because it came out first than the others but here’s a thing. It lacks a lot of capabilities as what this review have said.

We know that someday one mobile company might beat another but that’s the way competition goes. You must know the weaknesses of the other so you can improve your own product. That’s how business competition goes.

So I agree with this review.

I don’t think I’ll ever understand the appeal of the iPhone. I’ve used one - and frankly I was unimpressed. Yes, it was easy to use - but in a dumbed down, over simplified manner that is familiar to anyone who has used Apple’s products. I kept trying to find where the real option settings were, and then realized to my horror there weren’t any.
The phone was horribly locked down, between being forced to go with AT&T and being forced to either jailbreak the phone or bow to Apple’s every wish.
In actual practice I just found the iPhone a pain to use. I feel like the only person on earth who hates the oversimplied UI because it lacks functionality of other smart phones.

We get lots of requests to compare in detail Nokia 5800 with Apple Iphone 3G. Here are some reasons we believe Nokia 5800 is way ahead than Iphone-

    1) Size
I agree with u, but nokia isnt slim enuf …

    2) Weight
Correct, U can save 25g of extra load to carry around

    3) Screen Resolution
    Thats a real good difference.

    4) Storage
Agree…. But i dont think any one will buy MMC greater than 16gb unless he’s a real geek.

    5) Input Methods
When u get the perfect finger , u dont need any thing else like stylus and stuff

    6) Features
Agree, iPhone App store is the best place to make one fall in love with iPhone

    7) Colors
Good points for girls who wanna buy red nokia

    8 ) Battery
    Thumbs up to Nokia

    9) Camera
I agree, the cam is not good of iPhone 3G

    10) Video Calling
    Not sure of this feature

    11) Video Recording
iPhoen can record video, using the new app

    12) Music Service
Dont be nuts to buy music, use ur mind and u can copy music from iTunes, but iTunes suck big time

    13) Voice Dialing
yeah, 3GS only enables this option

    14) Voice Recording
    Available with 3rd party app

    15) Web Browser
    M not sure about this

    16) FM Radio
    Only internet radio

    17) Bluetooth
Use bluetooth app to share stuff from iPhone to iPhone (Only for jailbrocken iPhone)

    18) Messaging
Missing feature , i agree but not any more with 3GS

    19) Price
when it comes to Apple, all that matters is the apple logo!

    20) Experience
Nokia has experience, thats why every one will say …ehhh u got a new model of ur phone? while with iPhone ppl say … whoa? wats that?

    Verdict:
Let see if nokia gets successfull in killing iPhone … i bet it cant after launch of iPhone 3GS

Hey Admin… Thanks for such a wonderful article… I have learnt a lot from this… I just wanted to know what do you think about the new phone which is being launched by apple - “Iphone 3G S”… Apple has put many things into it which were’nt there in previous Iphone 3G and has launched a new firmware 3.0 for the old Iphone 3G… Do you think that this Iphone 3G S can be the next “Tube killer” or something like that or will our 5800 Tube still be able stand a tough competition to it…? Please post a new article comparing Iphone 3G S and Nokia 5800 Tube… Thankyou…! :)

you know what, there is such thing as iPhone killer! and the nokia 5800 really bares it all!! iphone dont support video editing and capture!! my God, what kind of a smartphone is that?? no cut and paste thing!! but when it comes interface and quick touch response, nothing beats iphone, however whats the purpose of looks when you dont have any basic features?? or i may say important features!

to apple company, stick only to media players like ipod! nokia rules!

but iphone will release a next generation of iphone, they call it iphone 3g S, wherein you can now capture videos and edit them direct to your phone,

and wait till n97 comes out in the market, im sure apple iphone will be killed in the telecom industry!

Like I said in post 157, a few posts back, I’ll get the Iphone 3G S when it comes out. Well, just got it today. Never used one before etc, took freakin’ ages to activate it, but damn, this is a nice phone. Yup, it may not have the same camera or other stuff my 5800 has but the user interface is sick.
The web browser is so much better it’s a joke. Like I said in the post above, with the 5800 I can’t even scroll to the P’s in my contacts without it skipping to the n’s or the r’s.
I’m gonna ditch vodafone, and contract movistar for 18 months only for the iphone. That says a lot. Shame I can’t get iphone on vodafone but whatever. In Spain, that’s like going from Verizon (awesome) to the shitty AT&T in the States.
Anyhow, to me it’s worth it, …. why? User Interface. Can’t beat it. And yes, the 5800 have many more advanced features etc etc.

    my 0.2 cts.

i just got my 5800 couple days ago… but ive been a nokian for over a decade. can someone PLEASE tell me where i can find an “anti-iphone” website? or iphone hate website? or even APPLE hate website?

smartphone wise i had 7650, 3650, 6670, 3250, N80, N81 and now the 5800… i cant say that the 5800 the best of Nokia cuz they are all “the best” in their own times.

dude, i do not want to list the 5800’s features which is fully unrestricted because id would be the 10000th person to do that. but… please iphone… die die die die die die!

I really like my Nokia 5800 xpress music edition ; but recently i encountered a minor problem. When one updates the phone to the higher version v20 from nokia website , all the preinstalled songs(200 in my phone) with the .dcf format stop getting played.I had to visit the nokia care store to get the licence keys reentered and only then the songs started gettin’ played. In most respects Nokia 5800 surpasses the ‘haughty’ iphone.Besides, as my first cell was a nokia , i have a soft corner for it too:-)

There have been several Ipod killers but i guess ipod is still living and living high. Iphone will do the same.
Iphone surely lacks some of the features that a Nokia 5800 will do easily. But it has got its own charm.
1.Its been two years since iPhone launch but the touch screen interface is still the best in business.
    2. App store is one of the best part of iphone. Even though you need to buy stuff but you get anything and everything there. Loads of free stuff too.
    3. Iphone doesnt have removable battery but it doesnt give me any reason too for which i would like to remove it.
    4. Cut and paste in 3.0 is the best i have seen for any phone.
    5. Safari is by far the best mobile browser available.
    6. And yes if you need a stylus or addicted to Keyboard you shouldnt buy an Iphone. But its certainly not a flaw in iphone that it doesnt have keyboard. Its for those only who want touch phone.
