We have been seeing a disturbing trend with our service providers here who start charging us for the voicemail services after the first few months of subscription which is kinda rip off, considering the service it offers. A simple answering machine can take care of the services provided by the voicemail and it would cost us a fraction of the monthly charges being billed to us.
Seems like we were in luck when we stumbled upon Best Answering Machine and to add icing to the cake, the lite version of the app is now available for free at the ovi store. But we would recommend getting the full version which costs just $10.95 and delivers more services than the voice mail service of the carriers ever would. Hit on the jump button to find out why.

What impresses us the most is the intuitive interface, making a mockery of the setting up an answering machine. There are plenty of customisation options as well that the users can use to tailor fit the app to their liking. The application uses amr format to record phone calls.
What we like?
- Intuitive UI
- amr format is light on memory without compromising on audio quality
- Contact specific greeting message
- Can work in tandem with Best Profiles, for auto-activation in selected profiles
What we don’t like?
- Auto-delete of old call recordings (we probably should have included this in the other list but at many a times we keep going back to our old call recordings and auto delete makes it difficult to keep track.)
Verdict
As mentioned in the title, Best Answering Machine is a very apt name for this app and going by the capabilities of the app, we wouldn’t even think twice before getting this app on our 5800s. If you are still sceptical, try the lite version of the app from ovi store for free and we assure you that in no time you will be shifting to the full version which you can buy from our store for $10.95. We should warn you that the lite version comes with a maximum time limit for messages at 10s and hence we highly recommend getting the full version.

I guess things arent so bad with South African service providers.
Our voice messages are provided at no extra cost. We just dial into a no-cost number to listen to our message, AND the voice message is MMS’ed to us as well as a sound byte.
I guess they cover the cost with their exhorbitant call charges
