2011 is here and guess what our friends at Electronic Arts join us in wishing our readers and patrons at Tube5800 a very Happy New Year 2011. As we gave it way with the title of our post, one of the best selling real-time tactics video games of all times-Command and Conquer 4: Tiberian Twilight is available as a free download exclusively at the Ovi store.

Tiberian Twilight as you may know is the latest and final chapter of Kane saga of the Command and Conquer series. So yeah, Tube5800ers are getting the latest game for free and before you head to ovi store to download this game, check out our brief review, after the break.Screenshots-

The gameplay of Command and Conquer is built around the concept of conquering bases scattered all over the map. Gamers can chose between offense and defense modes while Command and Conquer fans may miss the “support” mode available on Command and Conquer on desktop platform. Defense mode is not available for the preliminary levels though so gamers start with offense mode.

What we like?

Sound effects contribute for engaging gameplay
Optimally placed buttons don’t hinder much with gameplay

What we don’t like?

Mediocre graphics (We were expecting more from EA with Tiberian Twilight being the latest chapter in this series)
Control options are not optimal (Single taps and double taps are not consistent at times)

Verdict

Executing a real-time tactics game on a mobile platform is a challenge especially give the dimensions of mobile screens but EA has done a decent job with Tiberian Twilight on Symbian. Though the control options and graphics leave us a tad disappointed but given that its a free game (for a limited time only) it’s worth the download. However, we would fall short of recommending this game, when EA pulls the plug on the free offer. So yeah, get this game while it’s still free and get your dose of Tiberian Twilight on-the-move.

Ninjani- Sharpen Your Shuriken Skills on 5800

Remember the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles of the 80s? We were definitely hooked on to the TV series during our childhood days then and though we didn’t find a game from the very series for our 5800s, we managed to dig out the next best thing: A Ninja based games for 5800!

Ninjani is the name of the game and it has a very catchy story for you to be hooked on to. Unlike the Ninja turtles who prey on the bad guys on the streets of New York, Ninjani takes you the orignal land of Ninjas- Japan. A certain emperor from the land of rising sun has just been assassinated by a dreaded clan of Ninjas and the princess has been kidnapped as well. So now your mission is to retrieve the Princess from the Ninjas. Amazing story, ain’t it? Does the game live up to the build-up of the story? Let’s find out after the break.

After playing with this game for over 2 days now, we can assure you it’s one helluva an addictive game! The game is definitely not high in the graphics department but the gaming is where the real fun is. Music effects are one of the best we have ever seen and what makes the whole gaming experience sweeter is the online database where users can upload their scores and compare with other wannabe ninja grandmasters from across the globe.

What we like?

Graphics could have been better
The introduction video is just too long!

Verdict

Ninjami-Emperor’s Revenge is all about engaging gameplay and though we weren’t impressed by the graphics rendering, yet the story, the music and gameplay have been spot-on and exceeding our expectations at times. So we won’t hesitate from giving this game our coveted “must have” accredition. So, waste no further time, and get this game for free from the ovi store.

The Train Defender: Action Games Make a Comeback on 5800s

It’s been a while since we kicked some a** on our 5800s and we were looking for some action games over at the Ovi store. That’s when we stumbled upon one of the new entries in the store- The Train Defender.

The game as the name might have suggested by now is all about defending the train from an onslaught of machine gun waving rogues. Hmm, sounds like a good story line for an action game. But how does it fare out as a game on our 5800s? Find out after the break.

Well, eager to get our hands dirty we started toying with the game as soon as we downloaded it from the Ovi store. While the game description in the Ovi store did raise our expectations, the game was a big let down. Graphics is mediocre and does no justice whatsoever to the capabilities of the 5800 hardware. Gameplay is no better either with a feel of the video games of the early 90s.

What we like?

The story line of the game (We had to fill-in this section with something!)

What we don’t like?

Poor graphics
Poorer game play

Verdict

To Put it in one line: we are thoroughly disappointed with the game. The graphics is so 90s that even the java based games on our S40 devices look better than what Train Defense offers on our 5800s. Perhaps the developers got the wrong target device atleast considering our 5800s. May be the game is better off on one of the entry level symbian devices but the graphics is so poor that even those users are bound to be let down.

After all that venom we just spit on the game, if you are still interesting in giving the game a shot, you can download it for free from the Ovi store.

Zum Zum- Addictive Game from innerActive

Remember that brick game which was such a rage in the 90s? Well, gear up for something similar for Zum Zum is one such addictive game, you are not gonna be putting your 5800s down, once you download this game, for it has everything you could ever ask for in a game: addictive gameplay, good graphics and simple rules.

Did we go overboard with the description? We don’t think so, but you can as well see for yourself, when you go through our brief review after the jump.

Before we proceed further, let us throw some light on the objective of the game: You have to fire the coloured balls into the maze such that you line-up three or more balls of the same colour in a row, following which the balls disappear from the maze. Sounds too simple? Wait, we aren’t done yet, for the catch is you have to get rid of all the coloured balls before the chain reaches the fag end of the maze.

What we like?

Addictive gameplay
Simple rules

What we don’t like?

Interactive ads means the game cannot be played sans a data plan

Verdict

Zum zum again is one of those games which impress you not with their high quality graphics or fast game play but with simple rules and addictive gameplay. Its something akin to brick game of the 90s or we can even call it the free version of bejewelled if you will. But that free availability comes at the cost of interactive ads which prevents you from gaming anywhere there is no connectivity (tunnels, basements, flights etc) and the subsequent necessity of a data plan. So if you don’t mind being hooked on to a data network while gaming, Zum Zum is the game for you.

Sonic Jump- Jump Your Way to Glory!

How’s the gaming scenario on 5800 looking like for you guys? Well, there have been some popular titles from other platforms like the Asphalt, Prince of Persia etc, which have been bundled in the Symbian package and the hardcore gamer has been kept on his toes for a while. But, off late there has been not much of a movement from big names, but Sonic Jump from SEGA is a welcome change.

When a major game developer like SEGA comes up with a game, you don’t think twice before downloading that game and when they bundle the game as a free download, there is no reason not to get this game on your 5800. But is the game worth a download? Let’s find out, after the break.

After seeing the screenshots, if you are still wondering how the game fares like on our 5800s, we should tell you that it just rocks! We are totally blown away by the simple but yet addictive gameplay, so much that we had a hard time putting our 5800s aside for composing this review! No kidding, this is one of the most addictive games we have seen on our 5800s.

What we like?

Absence of tactile feedback
Sound effects don’t reflect the state of the game (just one soundtrack keeps playing throughout)

Verdict

Though we have been a bit harsh in the “we don’t like” section, we are absolutely amazed by this little game from SEGA. It may not have the best graphics or sound effects for that matter but gameplay is just addictive and once you start playing, it’s hard to put it down. We are so hooked up to this game that we have no qualms in giving this our “must have” for your 5800s.

Nokia 5800 Game Review: That Roach Game

If you are the ones who scream at the very sight of a cock-roach, then read no further for this game is all about cockroaches. No, the developers are not glorifying this species for the world already knows about their holocaust survival capabilities. Instead what the game let’s you do is squash cockroaches for fun!

Yeah, we are not kidding: the That Roach Game is all about killing cockroaches. If that’s grabbed your attention, let us inform you that this is one of the engaging games we have seen on our Nokia 5800s. Wondering how engaging can smashing cockroaches be? Find out after the break.

This is a flash based game and a very good one at that, perhaps one of the very best we have seen on our 5800s. The game is based in South Africa but that doesn’t mean the rest of the world is left out of this fun. Infact if you see the top 20 countries in the scores, South Africa doesn’t even figure in the list! That goes on to show how much people around the world are enjoying squashing these roaches.

While just squashing may not sound very engaging, developers have made it all the while more entertaining by adding social networking to the game. Well not exactly social networking like Facebook games but the game statistics which are displayed country-wise as we talked about earlier and the “shout” option add that networking fun to the game.

What we like?

Engaging gameplay with increasing difficulty over time
Social Networking Twist is fun
Provides a wealth of information on roaches and their spread across South African cities

What we don’t like?

Perhaps they should add a few other rodents!

Verdict

With the Soccer world cup heading to South-Africa, the municipal authorities may not do much to get rid of the roaches but we can assure you that gamers across the world will definitely give the roaches a tough time, albeit in a virtual world! So do your bit to get rid of the roaches before the World-cup fever catches on with the African nation.

Ovi Maps Racing Game- Race Around Your Block

Get your groove on people for Nokia is all set to redefine the genre of racing games with its Ovi Maps Racing. Yeah you read it right, Ovi Maps and Racing bundled together in one package as an addicting game.

With Ovi Maps Racing, Nokia is taking game customisations to an all new level by allowing gamers to create their own tracks, right in their backyards if they wish to for racing on some of the hottest wheels. As innovative as the concept is, let’s see how the game fares on our 5800s.

Before we dwell into the intricacies of the game, do take a look at this video walkthrough (Courtesy-Mobile Games):

Now that really got us pumping especially race around your block thing but much to our dismay we found out that we were not able to get a lock-on when indoors. But the Mobile Games guys do demonstrate the awesome customisation options of the game and the video clip definitely looks like it was recorded indoors. So ours might be a one-off incident.

What we like?

Innovative concept for a racing game
Catchy audio effects

What we don’t like?

Graphics is a big let down
Absence of accelerometer based controls

Verdict

While we definitely love the innovative concept of the game, we feel the graphics is a big disappointment. The game has the looks and feels of the java based mobile games of the mid 2000s and is no where near the graphics capabilities of our 5800s. Asphalt4 by Gameloft does a much better task at graphics, while the pre-loaded GT Racer is more impressive with its accelerometer based controls and decent graphics.

But Ovi Maps Racing is an innovative concept and since it is available as a free download for a limited period of time from the Ovi store, we would recommend this to our readers, just to get a feel of the new GPS based track customisations.

Bounce Boing Battle: Coming Soon on Ovi Store

When you read/hear Las Vegas, what’s the first thing that comes to your mind? Casinos and the bubbly nightlife right? Well, the same Vegas has been doing the rounds on the web but for a totally different reason this time around, courtesy Consumer Electronics Show or CES 2010 which recently concluded in the US abode of casinos and yeah Nokia did have a device or two up its sleeves but that’s not what we are gonna talk about here. We were more than amazed by this little preview of a promising game from Nokia- Bounce Boing Battle, which is a welcome addition to the gaming scenario on 5800s.

The game which brings real time interactive multi-player gaming to 5800s will be available for free on the Ovi store soon and is the latest addition to Bounce series of games, which are pre-installed on every symbian fifth edition and maemo 5 devices. While, its too early to call this game a must have, the trailers are hinting us that we would anyway, once it is out. Find for yourselves what makes us say so, after the break though.

OctoPuzzle- A brainteaser for the Seafood Starved!

If you are one of those people who would prefer cracking a puzzle from the comfort of your homes especially when its so chilly and almost inhumane outdoors, we have got something for you which might just kill your boredom atleast for a while. Thanks to OctoPuzzle, a free brainteaser from Lunagames.

Winter is also the season when it gets really hard to get that favorite seafood dish of yours, especially if you are on shoe-string budget in a land-locked country! Well, let us assure you that the new brainteaser will whet your seafood appetite too, but that’s rather subjective for those who would rather see some aquatic organism on their plates than on a LCD screen of their handheld. In total there are 20 levels to keep you glued to the game at-least for a couple of hours.

While Octopuzzle may not appeal to a hardcore gamer, the brainteaser will definitely find some takers among the puzzle crazy mobile users. The level of difficulty ensures that game-play doesn’t get boring after a couple of levels and most of the puzzle lovers are gonna love this game.

Game: Airport Touch Goes Free on Ovi Store

Offscreen Technologies, one of the best known developers for the symbian fifth edition platform have been doling out christmas giveaways on the ovi store for a while now. If you have been following closely on the development over at the ovi store, you would have noticed that Offscreen has been dishing out one paid app after another, sans the price tag.

The latest to join the bandwagon of paid to free apps/games from Offscreen Technologies is the Airport Touch, a fun little game, wherein the gamer has to direct the incoming flights to the landing strip of a virtual airport. Sounds interesting? Hit on the jump button for more tid-bits of this game on our 5800s.

How does the job of an Air Traffic Controller appeal to you? With the task of ensuring that each aircraft gets the designated strip for take-off and landing, this is probably one of the toughest jobs, which demands practioners to be on high alert all the time. Getting in to the control room of an actual airport may be out of scope for most commoners but thanks to Offscreen, you can now get a feel of the same, right from your 5800s.

The objective of the gameplay simple: to land bigger (blue airplanes) on the longer landing strip and the smaller (yellow) airplanes on the shorter landing strip by drawing trajectory patterns for the planes. While the game looks simple, it gets complicated as you play with a myriad of planes flying-in from all directions.

What we like?

Innovative concept for a mobile game
Level of difficulty is optimum

What we don’t like?

Absence of sound effects
Not optimized for finger-touch game-play

Verdict

Airport Touch is an interesting concept for a mobile game and while its not really as good as the previous games from Offscreen when it comes to graphics and UI, gameplay is engrossing and entertaining. We would definitely give this game a “must have”, but the absence of audio and finger touch optimization prevent us from doing it. However, the game is still a good deal for its gameplay and since its free, there is nothing wrong in giving it a spin on your 5800s.
