Carnival Comics Brings 3D Comics to 5800s

Who says you need a fancy 3D panel to peek into the third dimension of entertainment? Your 5800 is all that you need and we aren’t kidding whatsoever. Carnival Comics bring 3D technology to your 5800s and 5800ers are among the first few to experience this 3D extravaganza on a mobile device!

At present the 3D technology comes at the cost of having to sport 3D glasses to catch the extra dimension, sans which it’s just a blurry image. This 3D comic is no different and you will have to invest in a pair of 3D glasses. The comics is free though, but is the investment in the 3D glasses, worth it? Let’s find out after the break.

If the above images appear murky, it’s only because they are in 3D and you are seeing them on a conventional 2D panel sans the 3D glasses. Put on your 3D glasses and you will get the feel of 3D, a rather mediocre version of 3D we would say. While we certainly cannot expect the 3D experience rendered by our 3D TV which cost us a bone and flesh, we think the whole 3D build-up to the comic strip is just a marketing gimmick and we wouldn’t have complained if they had just sticked with 2 dimensions.

3D Glasses are rather an expensive investment (if you don’t already have them)

Verdict

A lot of companies have been toying around the 3D concept on mobile platforms for quiet sometime now. There are a few games on iPhone platform as well but none have managed to click in this effervescent segment. At the end of the day not many would fancy carrying around a pair of 3D glasses just to be able to play or in this case read some content on their mobile devices. We think 3D content is best left to the bigger panels and the humongous cinema theaters for they make the 3D experience more worth while with the accompanying ambience and sound effects.

However, we do appreciate the effort put by Carnival Comics to bring 3D content to mobile phones and that too for free makes it a worthwhile download, especially if you have a pair of 3D glasses to spare!

Natgeo Photos- Experience Natgeo on your 5800s

Love capturing the photons? Nah, we aren’t talking about any experiments relating to Molecular Physics here, but a very subtle art called photography. If you are into photography, the archives of National Geographic must be akin to the holy grail! Shutterbucks not limiting, nature enthusiasts flock this popular service which extends beyond the web space (into the traditional print and electronic media).

We are not sure what category of the target audience you belong to, but we can assure you that Natgeo Photos has something to offer for everyone. Just how much you will love to have this is something you will have to find out through our brief review, which you can catch after the break.

We won’t waste much time: we are a tad disappointed with the app for we were expecting to see content customized to the screen resolution of our 5800s. If you were thinking about downloading some breathtaking wallpapers for your 5800s via the app, you will have to look somewhere else for that isn’t supported either but what the app brings to table is access to the archives of NatGeo, which you could have easily accessed via the symbian browser but the content is more streamlined within the app and there are few perks like being able to share the article/photo via SMS and Email.

Verdict

As we said earlier, we are disappointed with the app, for its shortcomings weigh far too much for us to overlook. Further there are hardly any benefits (except for easy sharing of articles/photos) that the app provides in comparison to their mobile website. Being fans of NatGeo ourselves, we were expecting something more from the app, and we were thoroughly let down. Not surprisingly, we are NOT recommending this app to our readers.

Vuvu-what-zela? If that’s the question on your mind, we should be directing you to the FIFA Worldcup happening as we blog this very post over in South-Africa. Vuvuzelas are nothing but the blowing horn which is traditionally associated with South-African football.

The high pitch sound of the Vuvuzelas has been one of the most widely debated topics of the FIFA World cup with players and viewers across the world being distracted by the noise. There are stand-alone applications to filter the Vuvuzela noise from the Worldcup broadcasts which are widely used by cable operators world-wide. It may be a matter of concern for others but the joy of blowing Vuvuzelas is unmatchable and our friends at MMMOOO just saved you a trip down to Cape Town as you can very much blow your own Vuvuzela wherever you (or rather your 5800) are (is).

As we are composing this post the host nations are fighting it out with France to keep their World cup hopes alive and are leading 2-1 at this very moment. As you can guess Vuvuzelas are at their loudest and we just can’t stop blowing our own from our 5800s.

PocketLock- AutoLock Application for Nokia 5800

The battle of Resistive vs Capactive technologies for touchscreens is here to last with each having their own share of advantages and disadvantages. While the capacitive boasts of multi-touch capability, the resistive screen boasts of response from any kind of surface, adding easy stylus support among other things. This responsiveness to any surface proves to be bothersome at times, especially when you happen to be forgetful as us. It just slips our mind to lock the screen before slipping into our pockets and our coins and keys start doing all sort of crazy things like calling up random contacts and changing soundtracks. So we thought, there should be a way out of this misery and that’s when we came across PocketLock.

What PocketLock aims to do is to lock your phone everytime you slip it into your pocket, thus keeping you away from random calls among other things. That’s what it’s supposed to do, but how well does it actually fare on our 5800s? Let’s find out.

What do all those squares and rectangles mean? That’s exactly what we asked ourselves, but as it turns out the meaning of these squares and rectangles is of little significance (though we will come back to what they mean later). The app works just as great for there is very little you have to do to make it work. The only thing you can do is “Disable Autostart”, which you can readily access by tapping on the options button.

So how the app works is simple: it autostarts (unless you disable it) and locks the phone everytime you slip your 5800 into your pocket (or just cover the proximity sensor for that matter). That’s definitely a boon, especially for the absent minded 5800ers like us. Now coming to the meaning of those gibberish squares, we did a little bounty hunt on the web and unearthed a screenshot from NP of DailyMobile, which is the last screenshot we have pulled up here. The screenshot shows that the main screen of the app is just a description of the app and has no functionality what so ever. Why it didn’t show up on our 5800? Honeslty, we have no idea and since the app works just as great, we don’t care to bother. If any of our readers have an explanation or better, have a fix, we would love to hear from you.

What we like?

App light on memory usage and provides great functionality
A no non-sense interface works just great (even when we weren’t able to read the contents of the main screen)

The squares and rectangles on our app main screen (Kidding, this is not much of an issue for us but we have nothing else to fill-up this section)

Verdict

PocketLock does a great job at what it proclaims to do: to lock your 5800s when you slip it into your pockets. While there may be some concerns about the app draining the battery and hogging the phone memory due to its background functioning, we didn’t notice any considerable drop in either the battery or memory of our 5800s. So leave all your doubts behind and download this app for free, for its a great catch, especially if you are absent minded.

That’s when we landed on AP 2010 WorldCup Coverage, which does exactly what you would expect from an app from the reputed Associated Press. Latest world-cup news apart, the app brings you photos, videos, tournament schedule and more to your 5800s.

What we like?

Comes in four languages (if you are non-native English speaker, this is a great feature)

What we don’t like?

Timings in the schedule are not synchronized with the time zone set on 5800

Verdict

Associated Press keeps up with its reputation of bringing the latest news to its followers worldwide with its innovative app for 5800s. The app offers a wealth of information regarding the world cup and makes sure that whether you are stuck in a boring meeting or enjoying a cuppa coffee at your desk, you will be kept abreast with Worldcup happenings, right on your 5800s. Now only if they would fix the time zone faux within the app, but given that the app is free and the wealth of info it provides, we would recommend this app to our football crazy readers.

HandSigns- A Handy App for Your South African World Cup Travel

Heading to south Africa to catch the live action of the FIFA Worldcup 2010? With just under a week to go for the extravaganza of the “beautiful game”, we are sure you are done with all your planning and shopping but then there is always this last minute shopping which you just can’t do away with, isn’t it? We are about to cover one such app- HandSigns, which we are sure you are gonna love.

HandSigns as the name might suggest is an app that will help you interact in sign language with differently abled acquaintances. With over 1.5 million of the South African population suffering from several hearing disorders, this app may just be the little thing you overlooked but we are here to help our readers as usual. Check out how helpful this app can be, after the break.

Well as much as the name is self-explanatory, the app is that much easy-to-use. Just tap on the alphabet you wish to denote and the hand symbol appears. This is one of those no-fuss apps which do what they are supposed to do, in an efficient and under-stated manner. The application has been developed by AppCRAFT, the same guys who did the snake guide application earlier.

Verdict

HandSigns may not be that extensive handbook that you will have to slog over to be able to communicate with the hearing impaired but then it packs just about the things you might need to hold a conversation with a hearing dis-abled person. Further, apart from South-African version, there are American and Canadian versions of the Hand Signs available at Ovi store and more versions coming up soon.

Official Dilbert App- Brings Office Humour to 5800

Missing that humour in your seemingly mundane life? What’s better than a daily dose of Scott Adam’s Dilbert on your 5800s? Nothing comes close to that for sure (atleast for us). The witty engineer, Dilbert and his evil dog-Dogbert are the winners of the Best Comic strip on more than one occasions after bringing laughter to more office cubicles than we can imagine.

Brightkite, Another LBS for 5800ers

LBS what? If that’s what on your mind after reading the title of this post, let us throw some light on it. LBS stands for Location Based Services and it’s all the rage in almost every mobile platform today. There is Google’s Latitude, then Foursquare and now the latest fad is Brightkite.

Brightkite has slowly creeped into the seemingly crowded LBS apps on the web and it now boasts of an enviable user base. Further with official applications in Android, iPhone, Blackberry and Symbian, the Brightkite team has ensured that you stay connected to their servers, irrespective of the mobile platform you are loyal to. So what makes this service click? Let’s find out after the break.

If you hadn’t heard about Brightkite, we suggest you take a look at their portal, which we must say does a good job of explaining the basics of the service. What we love about this service, is you don’t have to actually sign-up for an account with Brightikite, thanks to Facebook connect. The app is a good ensemble of all the features you would ever need in an LBS app.

What we like?

Verdict

Brightkite is an amazing LBS app, no second thoughts about it. While we are definitely impressed by the user-friendliness of the app, we are kinda worried about the overdose of LBS apps on our 5800s. I mean each time we stop by a new or a happening place we like check-in on one of the LBS apps but the number of apps keeps growing by the day, and we have to make a choice on which to use and which not. Sometimes it’s your friend circle who will decide for you, for there is no fun in having no friends in your favorite LBS app. Having said that, we should add that we are staying with Brightkite for its ubiquitous presence across all mobile platforms and integration with other networking services.

Though the absence of any new features in the iPhone emulator was a bit of a let down for us, we definitely love the addition of four other emulators in this version of MyPhone. If you haven’t bought any of these emulators, there cannot be any better occasion than this to get your hands on these at an unbelievable price of just USD 12.99. So waste no further time and head straight to the MMMOOO store to grab a license of the best selling 5800 app.

P.S- Remember to uninstall the earlier versions of MyPhone, Win7, iXp, M1 and iConsole before installing MyPhone v2.52 to avoid the update error.

Snaptu- One Touch Solution to All Your Web Feeds

How does the idea of having access to all your web feeds in one place sound to you? No, we are not talking about an RSS feed reader but something way beyond that. We mean social networking services as well as web apps, yeah right everything that you wish you could carry with you in one single screen! That’s exactly what Snaptu is all about-a single solution for all your web needs, well almost!

So there is Facebook, Twitter, Picassa, FlickR, Accuweather… We can go on and on but that’s not really what we are here for. We are to see how these services actually fare within Snaptu, and you will find the answer to that after the break.

Well that is something for a web app! We haven’t seen a better solution for aggregating all our feed in one place. It’s like the Google Reader for your 5800 and what makes it better is that apart from pulling feeds from your favorite websites, it also pulls your feeds from Facebook, Orkut, MySpace, Twitter, Picassa, Flickr, Photobucket and much more. Its more like: You name it, they have it scenario here.

The app is really fast and once you key in all your account info, it’s as easy as A B C, no kidding! All this comes at a cost though: the app is not as exhaustive as each of those stand-alone apps. To give you an example: there is no option to upload photos in Facebook/Twitter apps of Snaptu.

Verdict

Though the individual apps are nowhere near the capabilities of the stand-alone apps of each of the services, Snaptu provides a fast and intuitive interface to access all your favorite feeds in one place. The tight integration of the variety services covering SNS (Facebook, MySpace etc), Image Sharing (Picassa, FlickR), and web apps (Nimbuzz), Sudoku etc make this a worthwhile download on your 5800s.
