The gameplay of Command and Conquer is built around the concept of conquering bases scattered all over the map. Gamers can chose between offense and defense modes while Command and Conquer fans may miss the “support” mode available on Command and Conquer on desktop platform. Defense mode is not available for the preliminary levels though so gamers start with offense mode.

What we like?

1. Sound effects contribute for engaging gameplay
2. Optimally placed buttons don’t hinder much with gameplay

What we don’t like?

1. Mediocre graphics (We were expecting more from EA with Tiberian Twilight being the latest chapter in this series)
2. Control options are not optimal (Single taps and double taps are not consistent at times)

Verdict

Executing a real-time tactics game on a mobile platform is a challenge especially give the dimensions of mobile screens but EA has done a decent job with Tiberian Twilight on Symbian. Though the control options and graphics leave us a tad disappointed but given that its a free game (for a limited time only) it’s worth the download. However, we would fall short of recommending this game, when EA pulls the plug on the free offer. So yeah, get this game while it’s still free and get your dose of Tiberian Twilight on-the-move.

What we think about it?

To be honest v52 doesn’t bring any notable additions to our 5800s but then bug fixes and speed optimizations are more than welcome especially considering the fact that 5800 was released way back in 2008 and it’s still going good. Show us another manufacturer or model which continues to get continued firmware updates! We noticed improved free memory after the update along with general improvements in speed of response. The browser has been updated  to v7.2.6.9 and Ovi Maps to v3.04 10. Notable drawbacks include absence of Nokia mail and as argo reports at AAS, the “recently added” tab in podcasts section has been removed, much to the inconvenience of regular podcast listeners like us.

Since there is no official changelog as such, our friends at DailyMobile report the following changes:

• Upgrade CPU performance
• Enhanced touch screen
• Improve wifi, connection error Ovi Store
• Rotate Enhanced
• Software Map added
• V52 pictures and movies better!
• No Nokia Email
• Interface does not change!

You can download the latest firmware update v51.0.006 Over The Air (OTA) now. Its not available via Nokia Software Updater utility as of yet. Remember the update is not  yet available for all product codes and geographical regions. Check the changelog below.

Even though Nokia 5800 has User Data Prevention (UDP) feature, its still advised to backup everything before you run the update on your device. The update should roll out worldwide and for all product codes soon in few days/ weeks. So if its not available for you, just wait for a while as it has nothing great to try changing product codes just to get your hands on it.

The mobile browsers from Opera- the Java based Opera Mini and the beastlier Opera Mobile have been the browser of our choice for quiet sometime now. Adobe’s Flash is one thing we sorely miss on this browser, but let’s see how well they compensate for the lack of it in their latest iteration.

In their latest iteration of the java based mobile browser, Opera have decided to steam iron out the wrinkles around their previous iteration in the sense that we don’t see any major additions in the new version. It’s as Opera team puts it a “minor” update but an important update nevertheless. The latest browsers now sports a new skin which makes multiple window browsing faster than ever. Couple this with improved memory management and improved scrolling performance, you have an update you always asked for!

What we like?

1. Overall improvement in browsing performance

1. Absence of Flash!

Verdict

Like we said earlier, Opera Mini 5.1 doesn’t pack any major additions to it’s earlier version but the update is something you don’t wanne be missing. The new memory management frees up RAM so that you don’t have to kill any of those background applications you love to keep running. We don’t know if it’s the fastest mobile browser on earth, but yeah it’s definitely the fastest browser on 5800!

Skype fascinated netizens with its attractive call rates in VoIP and easy video integration in Skype-Skype IM conversations. While VoIP calls work great over the client, will we now able to make video calls on Skype iPhone 4 style? Let’s find out, after the break.

The short answer to that is NO, not yet. The official Skype client for Symbian doesn’t support video chatting yet. It’s ironic that though the symbian phones have sported a front facing camera for over half a decade now, Skype has overlooked this feature in their symbian client while the iPhone with its very first front facing camera model, gets the Skype update enabling video calls.

Having thrown video calling out of the window, is there anything to look forward in this iteration of Skype for Symbian? Fortunately, there is: the all new memory management frees more RAM than any of the VoIP clients you have on your 5800s.

What we like?

1. Improved Memory management
2. Faster response time (compared to earlier versions)

What we don’t like?

1. Absence of video calling
2. Noticeable lag in responses when compared to the Skype client on PC/Mac

Verdict

Skype is such a popular VoIP/IM service, that most of the 5800ers are gonna love to have this client on their handset. While the client as such isn’t as good as one would have expected it to be (especially the lack of video calls), it ain’t much bad either. Improved memory management is one good reason to get this update if you already haven’t on your 5800s.

You already know from our previous reviews that Nimbuzz boasts of a great UI among other things. So what exactly are the additions in the recent update? Does it beat Fring as the top VoIP app for 5800s? Find out after the break.

Before we proceed any further, let’s take a look at the official changelog for Nimbuzz v2.4:

We are totally on love with the synchronisation of phone contacts with Nimbuzz contacts. It makes way for a seamless VoIP experience in a way we haven’t seen yet on our 5800s! Another thing that we noted was the prompt for entering our phone number, which we assume the app uses to add the option of calling from network/VoIP directly from the Nimbuzz contacts screen.

What we like?

1. Kinetic scrolling is the best that we have ever experienced (beats Gravity at times!)
2. Customizable Twitter refresh frequency is an amazing option for tweaking your battery/data plan

What we don’t like?

1. Absence of video calling feature

Verdict

Nimbuzz used to be our first choice app for VoIP on our 5800s but it changed since Fring updated their client to bring video calling over VoIP to our 5800s. Nimbuzz is yet to bring this feature and we are sticking our guns with Fring for the same reason. However, if video chatting is not your priority, we would highly recommend Nimbuzz for your VoIP needs for it has one of the best UIs for any third party app on 5800s.

Though the Nokia Beta Labs says that the app is not yet ready for 5800 or rather “not completed the full testing cycle”, we went ahead with our review, which you can catch after the break.

As you can see in the demo video above, the app provides desktop like IM experience with support for GoogleTalk, MSN Live, Ovi and Yahoo! IM services. There are a number of perks over the earlier client which was available for nonChat with your friends on the Windows Live Messenger, Yahoo!® Messenger, Google Talk and Ovi communities. -touchscreen devices, the complete list of which you will see below:

• Easily change your custom status, avatar (picture) and switch between conversations and communities with just a few taps on touch-based devices.
• Preview new messages in the Chat home screen widget.  When signed in to multiple communities, the widget will cycle between them.  You can also change your presence within the widget itself.
• See your friends’ avatars and set your own using the camera or an image from your gallery (for Windows Live Messenger, Gtalk and Ovi communities).

Verdict

Being a webkit based app, the Nokia Messaging for IM is still not optimized for efficient operation on Symbian fifth edition devices. While its not one of the most responsive apps on the 5800 resistive touchscreen, the sleek UI and desktop-like chatting experience make this beta worth a trial.

Before you head to Ovi Store to get this app and add that personal touch to your navigation experience, we should warn you that there are 54 commands in total, so unless you have like half an hour to spare, you are better of downloading some of the voice packs available within the app. What options do users have and how easy is it to add a personal voice pack? The app has a very simple and elegant interface where your fingers will intuitively know their way around. Creating your own voice pack is as easy as two taps, and we are referring only about starting the process. For creating an entire voice pack will take anywhere around 15 min to half an hour depending on your speed and patience. Downloadable voice packs are fun too, we fell in love with Cylon of Galactica pack, and would love to know your favorite pack, apart from the one you created yourself, ofcourse.

What we like?

1. Ease of use
2. Downloadable voice packs are fun

What we don’t like?

1. Downloading voice packs is a tad slow
2. Lack of intelligent voice synthesis

Verdict

Well, Nokia did take the navigation market by a storm by making their voice guided Ovi Maps free for use and just when we thought they were complacent, they release the highly customizable Own Voice app for personalizing the navigation experience. Though the app doesn’t have a fancy voice synthesis engine, which would just record one command and generate all other commands using the audio signature of one’s voice but then this is a free app and coupled with free Ovi Maps, this is one killer combination.

When it comes to voice commands, differing accents pose a stumbling block, as Microsoft learned when it was pitching Microsoft Dictation as the primary speech-to-text add-on for its Office suite. Has Google learned anything from Microsoft’s bitter experience? Let’s find out after the break.

Since the highlight of this update is the voice search feature, we started playing (or rather talking) around with the app as soon as we downloaded the update. Voice recognition is surprisingly accurate and it even lets you chose the accent: American, Australian, British, Indian and New Zealand along with support for Mandarin. Now that looks like a smart move from Google: covering India and China is like covering more than half the world’s population and by throwing in a few other English accents, Google has captured the bulk of the English speaking world population.

Coming back to the praticality: voice search works great. The app failed to recognise only once in our close to dozen attempts and when it failed, it did come up with suggestions (beginners, mcdonald’s, mega hertz, mac rumours, night terrors!), one of which was the correct one (McDonald’s) as indicated in the third screenshot above. In general voice recognition was satisfactory and there were only issues when we used local street names (like Tanjong, Batok etc)  which is expected for non-English names.

Apart from voice search, the update also added the “Report a problem” option, just in case you find any discrepancies with Google Maps.

What we like?

1. Voice commands work great
2. App seems to load faster than earlier

What we don’t like?

1. May be support for more languages (Just that we have to fill in this section!)

Verdict

Google Maps is the most popular navigation app for good reason. It’s free, available across several platforms, and with the recent inclusion of voice search, one of the most intuitive and easy-to-use app on our 5800s. Though it’s nowhere near the version on android (with free voice guided navigation for US and UK) and iPhone (faster and more optimized UI), it’s heading in the right direction on symbian road. We know wtih Ovi Maps going free, it’s hard to keep away from it but if you are addicted to Google Maps, voice search gives you just another reason to switch to Google Maps for your navigation needs (if you are on a data plan though!)
