BREAKING NEWS: Nokia has released today a major update for Nokia 5800 XpressMusic. The firmware is updated to v20.0.012 now with the much demanded Photo Geotagging and other features added for Nokia5800 plus some bug fixes.
The new update allows the camera to automatically record location data to photos, so that you can browse them by location on Flickr or Share on Ovi.
There’s no official info as of yet about the changelog list but inclusion of native Geo-tagging is the most noticeable change. Other changes such as bug fixes and the usual stability enhancements are also on board.
In addition, the phone’s Active Standby screen is now user-customizable. The phone operation seems smoother, screen rotations faster and video playbacks has less hiccups now.
How to update Nokia 5800 to latest firmware v20.0.012?
It is always advisable to take a backup of your Nokia 5800 phone data before you start the update. The firmware can be updated via Nokia Software Updater or even directly on the phone (OTA).
Update Via Nokia Software Updater:
You can use Nokia’s Software Update application, which can be downloaded directly from Nokia here on your PC. Choose Nokia 5800 XpressMusic in the list of models and download the tool from next page.
Update Firmware Over The Air (OTA):
Firmware can also be updated directly on your Nokia 5800 using the phone’s 3G or Wi-Fi data connection. Just enter *#0000# on your screen, your current version is shown here, choose ‘Check for updates’ from the options menu and start the update.
The update is something of a milestone as it should set many of the minor bugs that you people have been reporting in the Nokia 5800 straight.

UPDATE:
Ok here are all the changes/ improvements noticed with this firmware update (Changelog):
* Geo-tagging of photos have been added
* The secondary camera can be used too now for taking photos :0
* Improved camera, faster and accurate autofocus
* New podcast, Download! and Switch icons
* The icons within the music player got a face-lifting too
* Phone’s keypad has a new design
* Multi-language Dictionary added now
* Search and Application update have been added
* ‘Search’ searches your phone contents now as well as the Internet
* Touch Screen sensitiveness is improved and faster now
* Little faster internet data download times now
* Improved email experience
* Ability to customize the active standby
* Playing back videos has less hiccups, flash videos got zooming/panning & full screen options
* Gallery application is faster, and switching the orientation shows a fade effect in the photo
* You can also change your songs details now (e.g-artist,Album,genre,etc)
* voice recorded files not showing in the “sound clips” folder, its fixed
* HaloOx hack is working
* General operation is smoother and streen rotation faster
* Many more improvements made, several issues resolved and bugs fixed
UPDATE 2:
Update works perfectly for most of you but some of the users are reporting a few problems with this update.
Known issues with this update:
1) Lock Code is no longer valid
If you update your firmware and find that your lock code (default is 12345) no longer works, you can try this- Remember your key is still the same, you have to activate the keypad for “numbers only” mode by pressing # for 2 seconds. Then input your code 12345 or whatever that is.
If that doesn’t work, update and reinstall the firmware again via Nokia Software Updater and try this same trick again. If nothing works, you have to hard reset your phone by *#7370#. If you have not already updated the phone, it is advisable to turn off your lock code before updating the firmware to V20.
2) Dictionary, new search method and app updater not showing at all
Go to Menu, application, press options, then organize, select last application and click option then remove. just wait few seconds and then click cancel you will see 3 new applications in application menu in last which are Search, Dictionary and app updater.
3) A ‘System error’ occurs when launching ‘Search’ from the standby screen.
Do a ‘Settings reset’ on the phone with *#7780#. This will soft reset your phone. If that does not help, you have to hard reset the phone with *#7370#, unfortunately you will lose all your personal data with that.
4) Firmware update not available for you
Firmware update 20.0.012 is released for most generic product codes for now and not for all product codes. It will be available for all product codes gradually. You can find your product code on your phone below the battery. Check the list James provided below in the comments, if your product code is not in the list, you have to wait for sometime till the firmware is released for your product code.
If you are too desperate to update your phone and cant wait for sometime, you can try changing the product code to any of the code James mentioned below by using any of the tools like JAF, Nemesis or Phoenix. Google it for more info on how to change product code of mobile. We can write a step-by-step tutorial for that if you need.
We advise all of you to not change the product codes and have patience till the update is released for worldwide users for all product codes. Nokia is evaluating the responses and issues people are having with this update, a minor update again is possible in next few days with all of these issues fixed.
Nokia has launched a revolutionary product with completely new platform and OS, so issues like these are likely to come up during the launch. Nokia has always delivered what it promises, so lets be with them and have some patience till everything stabilizes for Nokia 5800. Cheers!!
UPDATE 3 (Mar 30)
Though this firmware update is available for about 2 months now, Nokia officially announced about it today. Official update from Nokia means it should be available now at all parts of the world. The update may still not be available directly on your mobile (via OTA) but should be available now via Nokia Software Updater utility.
“The update includes great improvements in the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic. As mobile devices become more and more advanced, additional features and new functionalities are easy to install to the existing device. We recommend people to take advantage of the new features and upgrade their Nokia 5800 XpressMusic, and get more from their existing device,” said Soren Petersen, Senior Vice President, Devices, Nokia.

UK guys should wait for sometime as the update may NOT be available there for now. Usually firmware update for SIM-free phones is release first and later comes the update for operator locked phones.
The availability of firmware update also depends on your geographic location.

You said “Active Standby screen is now user-customizable.” – I though I could now mix contacts and app-shortcuts, but no. Let’s hope it becomes posible in future. More than 4 contacts/shortcuts would also be nice.
However, Tube really seems to be working faster now. After update I had some problems with voice commands, but I got rid of them.

Friends, Be patient as it can take days/weeks before it’s available in all countries.
There’s nothing you can do to make it available more quickly.

Hi I have a problem with my 5800, is that when I started it, it works fine, but in a while when I lock it with the lateral slide the buttons’ lights switch off ( as it should do ) but when I unlock it the lights keep switched off, even sometimes they don’t get switched off when lock.
Everything is ok, camera fina, apps fine, all the things are ok.But that issue is worrying me.
Anyone has this problem too? How can I solve it?
Sorry for my english.

Wednesday, February 11th, 2009 at 6:39 pm
“Nokia has launched a revolutionary product with completely new platform and OS”
Hey Admin, thanks for all the advise and help regarding the 5800, appreciated
However, I have to take point to the above statement…
Nokia’s 5800 is not revolutionary, (although nokia have tried touch screens in the past, long ago, to no effect), the dreaded iPhone was ‘revolutionary’…there’s no new tech in the 5800, not by a long shot.
Also the platform (s60) is ancient and has been around for donkey’s years. As for the OS version, 5th just feels like 3rd with some added pizazz, but not much! Certainly doesn’t feel ‘new’.
No, Nokia have had long enough to get the software sorted on this, and it does feel like they’ve dropped the ball a little on this one. I know using the public to do your R&D is common place, but really some of these bugs are obvious and could have been detected by anyone in-house.
I know in the long run they’ll come good, they always do. In the mean time perhaps a little more direct communication from nokia to it’s buyers would appease early adopters with glitches?
Thursday, February 12th, 2009 at 1:17 am
Rod, thanks for your comment.
If a million handsets get sold in a matter of days, If I see hundreds of people standing in long queues in Philippines, UK, Russia, India, etc on the launch day, If I see int. celebs like Paris Hilton, Lady Gaga, Christina Aguilera, Britney Spears, and many more promoting the product, If I see over 700K visits per month hitting this site alone for their favorite phone, If I get 1000 mails a day from people querying about it, I can call this phone a true ‘revolutionary’ one.
There are hundreds of more reasons for me and millions of others to call this phone a revolutionary product. I have never seen such a craze for any Nokia phone ever. Did you?
Nokia was the pioneer in touch-screen technology and the first to thought about this. yes Iphone was a great product (and still is) but if you are still comparing the both, you need to check out our Iphone V/s 5800 post. We also made a posting few days ago how Nokia 5800 has beaten sales records of Iphone or any other smartphone by a huge margin and this is when the phone is not even launched in US and other major areas. This is the most demanded phone EVER in the history of smartphones.
Being a developer myself, I can assure you that 5th edition (S60 V5) is a lot improved upon and developed version than its predecessors. So if ’5th just feels like 3rd’ to you, that is not the case, there is lot of work in the back-end than what you see and feel in front.
yes, I agree with you that bugs like these are annoying for everyone of us but we have to understand that this is the part of the launch process for any phone. Have you ever seen a phone perfectly coming out without any issues and did not needed any firmware updates ever? Every phone constantly needs updates during its lifetime to resolve arising issues and bug fixes. A phone gets passed thru a no. of tests in-house and then with the beta testers, authorities and FCC before it comes out in the market. Yet small bugs do happen and will always happen, so Nokia 5800 is no exception.
Lets hope we soon get all issues fixed to make your 5800 experience a fun!! Cheers!!

Hey i’m really grateful to this site it has been my guide and has helped me make my phone up to date. i was really excited about this update but its not available for my phone. my phone’s code is 0575590 and it was bought in India, so could you please tell me how to change my phone’s code. Also the screen of my phone starts changing colours after it is used for a long time , it becomes pink, blue, etc and it becomes normal after i lock and unlock the keypad so please help me with this too.
thanx
Thursday, February 12th, 2009 at 10:23 pm
Admin,
Very rightly you have pointed out that 5800 is indeed a revolutionary product. I am using a 5800 now. It has got some glitches but it happens with every new OS.
Anyway, regarding upgrade I think it is better to wait for a few more days before v20 is sorted out.
Thanks for such a wonderful support forum.

I’M DYING FOR THIS UPDATE. I just downloaded NSS pls tell me wat to do next
Monday, February 16th, 2009 at 5:50 am
Ok people. If you have any problems after the update like I had, try to reset the tube. I guess that the reset code for any 5800 is *#7780# and the default/factory setting of security code is 12345. Back up your stuff first!
Tuesday, February 17th, 2009 at 5:55 pm
Just changed my product code to 0559054 but the update always fails since the last two days
Tuesday, February 17th, 2009 at 6:36 pm
How do you turn of lock code before updateing? U can just change it?!?!
Tuesday, February 17th, 2009 at 7:08 pm
I tried to change product code by NSS but its not working. Actually it sans the device alright but next step it fails to recognise the device and the screen does not show th existing product code. Any tutorial giving step by step instruction is welcome. Also please tell which vrrsion of Nemesis to use. I am using an older version.
Anyeay thanks for an elaborate news with feedbacks from users/experts.
Tuesday, February 17th, 2009 at 7:37 pm
I did my update, changed my product code from 0575581 to 0558982 and it worked a charm. I didn’t use phoneix to do it though. updated through Nokia website failed the first time..panicked hit retry and worked fine. Had to do a hard reset to get search bar working on front screen. Def feels faster, I have noticed BBCiPlayer has now disapeared though?
Tuesday, February 17th, 2009 at 8:22 pm
One more thing which I don’t know whether it is fit to be pointed out in this forum. But I could not find any thread relating to this so I post it here.
While syncing 5800 with PC, the installation of MTP drivers failed on my PC running XP. I googled and found that this is a problem faced by a few users. But I could not find any definite solution. However, I can connect my phone with PC suite and transfer the files.
So I would request to please post a dedicated thread if possible about this problem and point out what problems could arise for MTP not getting installed.
Thanks
Wednesday, February 18th, 2009 at 7:53 am
I have upgraded formware by changing product code through JAF. Its definitely faster, more responsive touch interface. Others yet to see. But my MTP drivers still not get installed on XP.
Thursday, February 19th, 2009 at 11:16 am
Guys there some news that nokia has removed ver 20 frm NSU..coz it still has bugs….new ver will be bak by march….
Friday, February 20th, 2009 at 3:50 pm
First, thanks for a very nice and informative site. I got this phone about two weeks ago and before then, I was really thinking of buying the iphone.
During the first few days, I didn’t know whether I had made the right choice since the touch was quite slow, no dictionary, poor camera etc. But after I upgraded the firmware almost everything works so well. The touch is faster, camera, a lot better than before the update, a dictionary comes with the update(I was really looking forward to this!) etc.
Feature wise, its packed and here is what I believe is Nokia’s greatest strength against the iphone. I just love the phone.
Btw, what’s the sales figure compared to the iphone?

Hi people,
I did an upgrade not too long ago to V20. The issue I have now is that the screen goes very blurred and u cannot read or make out anything. U have to keep pressing a key for a minute or 2 and then it become clear again. Leave it for a few minutes unattended or lock the screen and it happens again.
When this happens calls cannot be visible but u can hear. Have done the *#7780#. No change. Actually worse. It is just blurred now and cannot do anything after restart.
Help please?

HELLO ADMIN SIR,
I AM GOING TO BUY A NOKIA 5800 MOBILE FROM DUBAI. SO PLEASE SUGGEST ME A COUNTRY MADE. IS FINLAND IS OK OR HUNGARY MADE??
THEN I WANT TO KNOW IS, WILL RAPID TYPING OF MESSAGE WILL SPOIL THE SCREEN??? BECAUSE I AM NEW TO THIS TOUCH SCREEN WORLD:-)
PLEASE REPLY AND HELP ME..:-)

Firmware v21 should be available now for all of you either via Over-The-Air (OTA) or Nokia Software Updater (NSU) utility.
@SAM- Nokia 5800 is manufactured in many countries including Hungary, China, Finland, etc. Well it doesn’t make much difference but if you have a choice buy the one manufactured in Finland.
And NO, rapid typing does not spoil screen. If you are using stylus for typing, be gentle. You can also cover the screen with lamination or invisible shield if you want.

THANKS YOU VERY VERY MUCH ADMIN…:-)
I ASKED THIS QUESTION IN MANY OF THE FORUMS, BUT NO ONE REPLIED ME. YOU ARE THE FIRST TO RESPOND, AND SO I WAS EXCITED..:-)
AS YOU SAID, I WILL GO FOR AN FINLAND MADE. CAN I USE MY FINGERS WITHOUT NAIL FOR TYPING MESSAGES???:-) AS YOU SAID, I WILL GIVE A GENTLE TOUCH..
AND THANKS FOR REPLYING:-)

@SAM- My pleasure : ) Yes you can easily type without using your nails. Finger touch cant harm your screen as its meant for that only.
However improper and bad use of stylus can make a few spots on the screen. Like, on a game like ‘Touch Popper’ which needs heavy hitting on the screen for bursting the bubbles in limited time, if you are doing that with stylus, it may end up with some visible marks on screen.
So its better to use some kind of screen protection for your 5800 like- Invisible Shield

Tried to update firmware again today OTA because I dont have a data cable. Still no update available for me from V11!! V21 now available, but no-one can even get V20 yet! What’s going on? days/weeks to get firmware right?…try months. Why have Nokia created some sort of priority list using product code numbers? My phone is a 5800 same as yours, you paid for your phone, I paid for my phone so why can’t we all get the updates at the same time?
