Firmware Update V.40 Brings Kinetic Scrolling to 5800 Finally!!

Filed Under Nokia 5800 News

Nokia 5800 Firmware Update V40 Kinetic ScrollingWe just got the BREAKING NEWS we all were dying to hear since long. Yeah, the much awaited Firmware Update v40 finally lands at our Nokia 5800. The update brings with it Kinetic Scrolling and a New Home Screen similar to 5530’s.

The update has just started rolling out and is not yet available in all parts of the world. Do check on your 5800 if its available for you via OTA (Over the Air) or NSU (Nokia Software Updater). The update also reportedly fixes dozens of minor bugs and adds some performance improvements.

After a long round of rumors, hopes & debates and our appeal to all you Tube5800ers to sign an online petition for kinetic scrolling on 5800 where thousands of you did, Nokia finally heard our prayers today and gave a reason to smile to all 5800 users. Its like a dream come true for the 5800 community today :)

Screenshot:

Changelog for Firmware V40.0.005:
* Kinetic Scrolling
* New Home-Screen (like 5530)
* Auto rotation on text input
* Fixes minor bugs
* Performance improvements

Changelog Update:
* Kinectic Scrolling everywhere except: main menu, application menu, browser

* QWERTY Keyboard Auto Rotation (on text input screens)
* New screen alarm, but only when the screen is locked
* Ovi Contacts installed
* Removed Download! (Ovi Store still available)
* Replaced “Update Application” with “SW Update” as on the Nokia N97
* The application “Data transfer” was also implemented in “Settings”
* Real Player Updated to 12 October 2009
* Touch more responsive
* Improved stability
* NOT HACKABLE!!

Changelog Update 2:
* Slide to Unlock during call
* New contact & music widget
* New screen incoming call, only when the screen is locked

We will keep updating the changelog as soon as we notice more. If the update is not available for you yet, don’t get upset. It may take some days/weeks for you to finally see the update on your phone depending on your geographic location/ product code/ operator. If you can’t wait you can always try changing product code to get the update instantly (do it at your own risk).

How to Update the Firmware?

One of the following methods should work for you-

1) Via OTA: Just enter *#0000# on your dial screen, then go to options- check for updates.

2) Via NSU: Connect the phone to the PC and check with Nokia Software Updater application or ovi suite if the update is available.

Note: Though the 5800 has UDP (User Data Prevention) feature, yet its always recommended to backup your phone before updating the firmware.

We request all of you to share your views if the update is available for you and whats your experience with the new home-screen and kinetic scrolling on your 5800.

    Hi

    all true. Besides all the much awaited new features, what strikes me is the change of responsiveness of the touchscreen. Increased speed overall. Still must check if the camera has been improved. I have been contemplating a change to different model, but now I am staying with the lightest smartphone. Cheers

    no kinetic scrolling on browser, and menu.
    i will test if the alarm bug is corrected. i dont now if camera was improved or not…

    the hack doesn’t work in v40 at this time.

    the other news is:
    -ovi contacts
    -software update on applications

    cheers

    What if you have hacked your phone now and want to update? Is there gonna be a problem or does the hack just stop working?

    Thx in advance.

    @steyn- If your phone is already hacked, it will be in hacked mode only after the update. And it should not create a problem of any sort.

    Not available yet in NAM as far as I can tell. I tried both OTA and NSU and neither worked.
    By chance, does anybody have the latest product code for NAM? I’m running 0574994 and right now I’m on 31.2.008. I’m just guessing that this is the latest (before v.40) but I can’t be sure.

    What a great update! Its annoying that calendar entries and tasks only show on the homescreen when using the shortcut bar and not on the new improved contacts bar, its not like there isnt enough room on the screen.
    I thought this was one of the best features of s60 phones and means that I wont be using the contacts bar, which is otherwise great. Typical Nokia.

    Overall - amazing update :) Kinetic scrolling for me isn’t as important as lots of contacts on my main screen, but another thing is that you can’t have calendar events in Contacts mode, hope they add that soon too.

    - Had to perform Hard reset to switch to v40.. I don’t know why, but it wouldn’t let me use it properly without a reset.

    Waiting for widgets on desktop now :D

    synthz, I used a NAM code and got mine to go to v30.2.008 which I think is the latest. The code is 0574994. I’d write down your old one just in case. I have a feeling that this update will spread to everyone within a week, but who knows. Still nothing as of yet for NAM.

    Also, for anyone wanting to change their product code, I found this software easier to use than JAF (though that isn’t bad.)

    All that said, this might as well be the most important update 5800 have ever received.
    As i am pleased with all the new things , one thing is really annoying me. Those grey boxes on the enhanced home screen are everywhere - greay boxes around the contacts, grey box around the mail notification line… Annoying. No way to see your wallpaper. No way to find a wallpaper that fits those boxes either (might photoshop one myself later).
    So i went back to the old home screen. Anyway, that’s the first time I am saying it: GREAT UPDATE.

    PS. just have in mind - If you have had one of those unexpected browser shutdowns before the update , you will have them after the update as well. Of, curse:(

    Annoying.

    The update appeared as a notification in Nokia OVI Suite. This was on 13 Jan. I’m form Egypt, and I purchased the mobile from a local distributer for nokia.
    I instantly downloaded and applied the update, and felt the above-mentioned changes. Also the new homescreen is good but I think the new homescreen needs some more work from nokia.

    Friday, January 15th, 2010 at 6:51 am

    Alright updated my 5800. Took me a total hour.

    POSITIVE POINTERS:
    01) Love the intuitive Messaging interface of switching between fullscreen QWERTY and alphanumeric keypad.
    02) Touch screen is certainly more responsive.
    03) Kinetic scrolling is simply uh-mazing!
    04) Loading time is quicker in Gallery.
    05) There’s an extra quirk in the vibration response. The earlier vibrations were like ‘oom’. Now it’s like ‘ooOmph’…(not as gross as I made it sound…feels really good).
    06) Portrait to Landscape transition is smoother.
    07) When you press the empty area right next to the Battery Level, it displays an option for the Connectivity menu, plus other things (such as Outbox, Inbox, etc). Earlier, it simply used to highlight the selected app. Now when I select it, it highlights the whole area.
    08) Dedicated Ovi contacts menu in Contacts.
    09) Icon for ‘Access Setup’ has been updated.
    10) Three new icons added in the Applications menu (Phone Setup, Contacts and SW Update).
    11) Slideshow option in the Wallpaper menu.
    12) Extra options in the Homescreen menu in Settings.
    13) Phone Switch option added in Settings.
    14) Option to upload directly after taking a picture using Camera.
    15) Improved Maps usage.
    16) Music bar in Homescreen when playing a song.
    17) Ability to add headers in a normal text message in Messaging.
    18) The new selection feature (which highlights your selection) is great. i.e. If you’re touching to scroll, the highlight color will be red, but if you’re touching to open the highlight color will be grey.

    NEGATIVE POINTERS:
    1) Contact bar works great…but since I don’t want the pics of all the girls I talk to or sms to be displayed on my Homescreen for everyone to see, it’s not of much use to me.
    02) Still does not support charging via microUSB slot.
    03) Pressing the area below the Operator logo opens the menu for opening Calendar and choosing Profiles as before. No added options to Lock Phone and Removing the Memory card safely.
    04) The Shortcuts bar is not movable.
    05) No Kinetic scrolling in the Menu. But that’s not such a big issue, since I have only 16 icons in my Menu, and they fit perfectly fine.
    06) No Kinetic scrolling in the Applications menu. This sucks BIG TIME. I have loads of cool apps, and more that watching videos and listening to music, I use my 5800 to play cool games like Labyrinth Touch, Electric Beams, Prince of Persia, etc. Even after arranging them in sub-folders, the list’s still pretty long.
    07) SW Update (like it’s predecessor Application Update) does not automatically detect WLAN.
    08) No improved Camera functionality.
    09) No Kinetic scrolling in Web browser…suck big time too.
    10) Homescreen in Landscape mode still not supported.
    11) There are a few visible lines below the Shortcuts bar in the Homescreen. Those lines are obviously place limitators, but they are clearly visible. That is still not improved.
    12) Still no option to schedule Profiles and Wallpapers.
    13) No support for a video wallpaper.
    14) Still no support for playing .avi or DIVX files through the media player.
    15) Video files’ size in high quality still ridiculously high.
    16) Still cannot distinguish between updates made via NSU and OTA (Nokia Software Updater and Over-the-Air respectively). i.e. If I update my phone using the NSU, in the Device Updates menu (also accessible by pressing *#0000#), under the heading ‘Latest Update’, it shows ‘Not Updated’, even though I just updated my phone. But if I do it OTA, it says, ‘Phone updated’ or lists the date, I don’t remember exactly.
    17) The Contacts bar and Music Player bar in homescreen is opaque and not transparent, like the Shortcuts bar. This makes the phone look a tad messy in my opinion.
    18) The gray tabs between ‘Options’ and ‘Exit’ in the Menu in Landscape are still there. I hate them, but they can be solved by using the Maemo 5 theme featured in the tube5800.com pages.
    19) Would have been great to add an option to play Radio without connecting a wired headset. I don’t think this is a hardware limitation.
    20) No support for FM Transmitter. If the n97 can do it, the 5800 most definitely can.
    21) No QWERTY pad in Landscape mode when phone is locked.
    22) No orientation rotation when phone is in locked state (Power Button> Lock Phone)
    23) Entering text in the Message Headers in a New Message in Messaging automatically converts the text message into a multimedia message, although it reverts back to a text message as soon as you delete the header.
    24) When you play music via the Music Player and go to the Homescreen while it is playing in the background, as soon as you lock your device (using the thumb slider on the right side of the device) the Music Player automatically closes. But this happens only if the song is paused.
    25) Still no N-Gage support. The n97 recently received an update which added n-gage gaming capabilities.

    CONCLUSION:
    Update your phone, suckers! The v40.0.005 (custom version v40.0.005.C01.01) is a must have, and you’d be a real dimwit if you don’t update your phone. The 5530 is now out of competition, since it has nothing new to offer against the 5800. The n97 only has the QWERTY keypad, and nothing else to distinguish it; because in style and looks, the 5800 far surpasses the n97. However, the n900 is still the champ. But the second place can now be given to the 5800.

    Great update. Can’t wait
    I updated it yesterday to v31.0.101, and now v40 comes out… Damn Vodafone!

    ——————————————-

    Yep xD
    Confirmed too…not yet available in Portugal =/

    They took months to release the v31 here…and two days after, the v40 is anounced…lol.

    @ Sina & @ Ayush Do not try the dialpad thing. It didn’t work for me too. Run Nokia Software Updater on your laptop and it will upgrade.

    On my home screen, there is a horizontal button appearing just below contacts bar when I use “Contacts Home Screen”. And nothing happens after I click it. What is it for? Is it for Nokia Email Application? It looks completely blank.

    Some one please explain.

    Jacobo@23- It may take some days or weeks or sometimes even months. If you are too desperate, change your product code. It may void your warranty but you will get the kinetic scrolling on your 5800 :)

    Jay@28- Use any of the APAC/ APAC2 Blue product code like 0559950.

    Oxio@33, James@44, Sapo@48- Guys whose product codes are there in above list but still not getting updates- I think Nokia has put the updates on hold for few codes in the above list after making them available initially for few hours. Check if the update is available for you here-
    http://europe.nokia.com/support/download-software/device-software-update/can-i-update
    If not, you can try changing product code or wait for sometime if you can.

    Abby@47, Steyn@49- The change of product code will void your warranty. If the phone gets some problem in future and you choose to hand over to Nokia care for repair, they “may” find out about that even if you have switched back to your original code.

    Nabeel@56- You are the man Nabeel! Great observations buddy. Thanks for the great list, keep rocking!! :)

    Brimz@63- and others who are asking if the update is available in India or not, yes it is but just for some product codes. Product codes like 0559953(APAC2 BLUE), 0559673(APAC2 India RED), etc. works fine in India for this update.

    Thx every1 for sharing your experiences, keep reporting!! :)

    I tried 3 black product codes (the original plus 2) which are in the list of available to update v40 and none of them worked.

    @anonymous post 75- If you are on v30, your update might not be available yet. It has not rolled out to all regions/codes yet.
    If necessary, use the software mentioned above and switch to a different code later on. I’m not sure how changing the code though will affect your phone if you switch to a different region code.
    To everyone out there- be patient. The update will slowly be rolled out over the next week or two.

    Hi Admin,

    This is Great News for me that firmware updated. I had read all the posts for the same. Then I had checked with http://europe.nokia.com/support/download-software/device-software-update/can-i-update, for the my nokia 5800 XpressMusic Black having product code 0573797, it shows “Latest available software for Nokia 5800 XpressMusic, product code 0573797
    Version: 40.0.005″ so i had just connect my handset & Start updating the my Firmware by using Nokia Software Updater.
    Its around 126.8 MB update, I had successfully updated it on handset during update,screen of handset looks complete white.After finishing update i just exit from NSU as instructed by software.
    But when I turns to my phone its switch off. so i tried to switch it on again, But it doesn’t start, its start vibrating & after some time stopped.

    Now i Couldn’t understand what to do to start it?.Please help me to sort out this issue so i can use my phone

    @onePOW:
    No new way to mark files. Though to make it quicker, you can select ‘Mark’ from Options on the first file, and then for the subsequent files, double tap the file to display the Options menu and Mark.

    What’s the use of adding more keys? The 5800 is a touchscreen device. If you want to use traditional keypads, this phone isn’t for you.

    @jlb. You should have no problems going from v20.x to v40.x
    @Stevie I’d wait a few weeks just to see if it gets released for your product code. If not, there are plenty of codes floating around on the net that you could use to upgrade.

    For US users, I know that there are currently 2 that are currently on v30.x and stand the best shot of getting the upgrade.
    They are 0574994 and 0577454.
    For any other people, please check this site- http://europe.nokia.com/support/download-software/device-software-update/can-i-update -to see if your product code is eligible for the v40.x update.

    Hi guys, just upgraded to v40 and it is amazing with kinetic scrolling :) . The contacts, messages, gallery, all songs , are now fast and easy to use. Btw the main menu and applications menu does not have this feature, no matter whether it is in grid view or list view :(
    also the camera does not improve with this firmware. The web browser also doesn’t have this, it is no big deal, since I use opera mobile 10 and it is a better browser and is free to download.

    another cool thing is that if the phone screen is locked, and when you receive a call, there appears two buttons with sliding action, where you have to slide to accept call or unlock(similar to iphone). These buttons with sliding action also appear when screen is locked and alarm calls, you have to slide it to stop or snooze. it is cool and eye candy. home screen now has sliding contacts 4 short cut keys . Also music keys when music is playing.

    Other things my settings, messages, applications was as before, nothing was changed. :)Earlier I had hacked my phone to install unsigned apps, the upgrade doesn’t seem to affect them, i didn’t had to re-hack my phone.

    Wasn’t available for my product code, after 3 days changed it using NSS, (it was too easy, doesn’t knew that before).It took only i minute. Download and Upgrade took around 2 hours.

    Now my world just opened up. And I am the happiest man in the universe. My Nokia 5800XM is now a pleasure to use.

    Cheers and Enjoy your 5800 guys.

  113. 113 Nabeel
    Sunday, January 17th, 2010 at 11:29 pm

    @Andrew:
    That isn’t a bug, buddy. I know what the issue is. When you update your device, it’s sorta similar to doing a hard reset on it. And if you have a bunch of applications stored on your MEMORY CARD, then the phone tries to install them while switching on.

    The best way to avoid this thing is to remove your memory card, switch on your phone, and then insert the memory card again. You’ll see a dialog box which says ‘Memory card initializing’, and if you have LOADS of apps (like me), then the process will take at least an hour. It’s best to do this at night and go to sleep, or in the day if you’re an owl like me.

    NOTE:
    NEVER remove your battery if the phone refuses to switch on after an update or a hard reset. This seriously messes up with the Application menu or something and creates a lot of glitches. Best way is to remove your memory card beforehand.

    Hope that helped.

    @Stevie:
    Buddy, a word of advice. There’s no hurry to update your phone. I mean, sure, the features are great, but is it worth it risking your warranty? If you’re sooo desperate to have it, I suggest you take it to Nokia Care and request them. Otherwise, I don’t recommend ‘hacking’ or changing the product code of your 5800.

    Reason? Simple. The 5800 is a state-of-the-art world-class phone. There are even some units shipped with capacitive screens now. What is the use of debranding your phone? However, if you’re not afraid to void your warranty, or to cause some serious damage to your phone, go ahead.

    Thanks, buddy. I’m not much of a blogger, but I find tube5800.com amazing and one hell of an effort, that’s the reason I follow it enthusiastically. Personally, I feel that among all mobile phones running on S60v5 platforms, the 5800 is one of the best ones out there.

    And yes, certainly. I’ll be posting more stuff as I find.

    @Nabeel: The headset is required for FM radio because it is used as an antenna. A built-in antenna would be insufficient for FM radio. There’s no way around this, it *is* a hardware thing.

    Hi Everyone,

    Quite satisfied with the update and enjoying the same for last three days. But few applications like, the “Pencil key” , Scratch Pad etc are not working properly. I twice installed the pencil key but my phone re-start everytime I try to open the app. Also, the scratch pad has become very rough..no longer can I use it to pen down notes etc.

    Any Advice..

    @kiki:
    Nopes…I updated my phone a few days back, and the problems you mentioned aren’t there. I’m able to create a new profile and switch seamlessly between themes. Perhaps you have a software issue? Try doing a hard reset on your phone.

    Here’s how to do a hard reset:
    1) Switch your phone off.
    2) Remove your memory card.
    3) Press the Send key (green), the End key (red) and the Camera key.
    4) Without releasing them, switch on your phone, and don’t release the keys just yet!
    5) After a few seconds, release the keys. A menu will come up, similar to one which you got when you switched on your 5800 for the first time. Select your Country/Region, enter the Date/Time.
    6) Insert your memory card. If you have lots of applications, it may take a while before you can use your phone.
    7) You’re done! Enjoy the new capabilities of your old phone! :D

    @brimz:
    You have to realize that a mega corporation such as Nokia has millions of users all around the world. If they make the same update available for all users at the same time, their servers would burn out quicker than you could say ‘v40!’

    @Honey:
    Dude, just because something is a growing market doesn’t mean that Nokia will cater to it first. And what’s the use of ranting out your frustrated venom here? This firmware update is currently NOT available through any means in South Africa.

    I DID update my firmware successfully to version 40 by the following means:
    1. Checked what update version is available for my SA phone (code 0575950) and British Isles (code 0552438) by going to Nokia Europe website, under “Can I Update?”
    2. Followed the procedure referenced above, step-by-step to change product code from SA to British Isles using NSS.
    3. Downloaded, installed and used Nokia Software Updater (NOT OVI Suite) to update the firmware to version 40.
    4. Followed the procedure referenced above, step-by-step to change product code from British Isles back to SA using NSS.
    5. All working perfectly!

    Enjoy!

    Dear friends,

    The update v40 is available for India. The best way is thru your PC via Nokia Sofware Updater(NSU). Even if you have old NSU on your PC, go to Nokia.in and download the Latest NSU, run the latest NSU which will repair your Old NSU. Once this is done. You can connect your nokia as PC suite mode and get the latest updates v40.

    Thanks

    @Admin:
    Sure.

    @Jayvardhan:
    I suppose you’re talking about .avi or DIVX files. Well, you can’t play those files on your 5800 because for some unknown reason Nokia doesn’t include the necessary codecs to play them. However, there are numerous third party softwares which do play such files. The one which I use is SmartMovie v4.15 by Lonely Cat Games (www.lonelycatgames.com). Hope that was helpful!

    @Hassan:
    Salamak sadeeq..shukran! About changing your product code, you’re right…it does mean you’ll lose your warranty. The best thing to do is to, as you said, go to Nokia Care and ask them to do it. Or, you could wait. Anyways, what’s the hurry? If you’re in Germany, I’m sure it won’t be long. On a different note, did you check your product code against the list Admin posted at #16?

    @Mojeeb:
    The reason why it isn’t available in India is because there’s no geological evidence of dinosaurs under the Taj Mahal. C’mon, dude! Be patient! They’ll release it in a week or two. :D

    @Stevie:
    Duuuuude….really?! After months of talk over kinetic scrolling, you don’t know what it is? Anyways, it allows you better control in long lists, for example, instead of scrolling down via the scrollbar on the right, you can simply flick the screen upwards. Read my comment at #56 for further details about the upgrade.

    @hunny:
    It’s mentioned at #56 ALL that it has in store! :D

    Still no update for 0581915. It is really starting to annoy me. Especially since I’ve already had quite a few issues with my current firmware.

    But actually, most annoyingly, I purchased the 5800 sim-lock free. You’d think that this would mean that you are first in line with the updates… These small tings make me reconsider buying a Nokia ever again. Assuming that Google is gonna get it right, it might be a good alternative!

    even giants like nokia need time to compile the new firmware with different language packs and distribute it folks. if the whole world used standard english euro1 pack then all regions would have the same release date.

    I just sent the following mail to Nokia India, I hope they will reply soon.

    Dear Sir/madam,

    I have Nokia 5800 XM with product code: 0575586 with firmware version 30.0.011. Like most people having phone with this product code, I am also very very frustrated for not getting a firmware update. I can understand that it’s difficult to roll out updates for all the devices at once, but a general statement regarding the update timeline for remaining devices would calm most of us. Since we haven’t received firmware update 31.****, we are not sure if you will provide us with 40.**** update at all.

    If you are not planning to roll out firmware update for my phone, then at least show some decency by letting us know your intentions. That way, we can take some informed decision.

    It’s very hard to write a polite mail to someone who has irritated you so much. Please don’t make it harder by not replying.

  155. 155 Saravanan
    Wednesday, January 20th, 2010 at 9:47 pm

    Hi All,

    I’m from Bangalore, India and have successfully updated my nokia 5800 firmware to v40.0.005.from v30.0.011.

    My Phone Type is RM-356 and the product code is 0575590.

    When I heard about the new firmware update initially, I tried searching for the update through OTA using wi-fi. But it said no updates were available.

    Then as a next step, i checked in the Nokia India website’s ‘Can I update’ section. But to my disappointment, it said no updates are available for my product code.

    As I badly wanted to have the new firmware after reading all the posts here, as a final step i searched for the update using Nokia Software Updater (NSU). But to my surprise and luck, it said the new firmware v40.0.005 is available for my phone (I don’t know why the nokia website said otherwise).

    I was a little bit hesitant before starting the updates for following reasons:

    1) Amar Bhopi’s comment here in this forum saying that his phone crashed after the update through NSU.

    2) Nokia’s website said my product code doesn’t have the update yet.

    3) My 1-yr warranty has expired and i can’t afford any phone crashes during the update.

    But after a few mins of thinking, i decided to take the risk and update the firmware simply because i couldn’t resist having Kinetic scrolling as i have seen that in N97…simply amazing feature.

    So before starting the update, i did the content backup as advised and the update file was a huge 128 MB file which took me more than 30 mins to download with my 512 kbps broadband connection.

    Once the download finised, the NSU automatically started updating the phone. During the update my phone’s screen was totally blank and white. Also it said that my phone is disconnected from PC Suite..i was a little bit concerned because of that message.

    But since the update progress bar was still going on, i decided to wait and phew… the phone screen was back and started showing update messages and finally the update completed and the phone restarted automatically and it asked me to choose some simple settings like the phone language etc…just did that and here you go…my nokia 5800 has the new software version 40.0.005.

    Love it for:

    1) Kinetic Scrolling is really good and it makes really easy to scroll through my music library and contacts etc…

    2) Music Player controls are available in the home screen which is great.

    3) And yes..Touch response is better.

    Hate it for:

    1) album art is not displaying for the songs which is really bad..

    2) haven’t noticed any marked improvement in speed.

    3) No new apps or games.

    Anyway it’s still worth updating your firmware just for the kinetic scrolling.

    Cheers.

    okay so I am from the phil…and I was able to update my phone by changing my product code…I had a bit of a battle going on yesterday trying to run NSU in vista….I finally was able to do somehting about it.

    so here are my take on the new version

    home screen was definitely useful but it totally sucks….hehehe…I just hate it since the all this gray boxes distorts the seamless design….hehehehe..it looks like a cloned china phone….I felt like using one of those very old windows OS

    KS was definitely useful and wonderful…..I guess they will be considering placing it in the main and sub menus…

    speed…yep there was improvement…..

    touch …definitely….I was texting faster this time and I did not really have to really push the screen….

    will I recommend the update..? sure….

    Excellent point, buddy! Wonder why I didn’t think of that…but your reason makes absolute sense. The reason why the new update isn’t available for Nokia users in India must be the huge number of languages there, eg. Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Marathi, Punjabi, Sindhi, Gujrati, etc etc!

    On a different note, the update is released all-over in Pakistan. :D

    I didn’t get the update immediately. I was with v30.xx before, and was checking if i could get v40, and I could not. After 2 days, I went to the Nokia Care, and asked them to update the firmware to 31.xx. After the phone has been updated, upon checking for updates on NSU again, i found the v40 was available.

    So, i am guessing, only those who have updated to v31.xx can get v40 rightaway.

    I am from Bombay, India. Initially, I was unable to download the new release of the Nokia Software Updater. It would stop with the message that three attempts to connect had failed. Attempts to check for updates from the phone resulted in the same message that no updates were available. I was on V 21.0.25. The phone had never been updated.

    Now, I went into Nokia.co.in and into Device software update. I downloaded the latest Nokia Software Updater for 5800 and installed it. It checked my phone’s software and told me V40.0.005 was available. I selected the update option, and it is being downloaded now. Its a 126.8 mb file and is taking a while to download. I don’t think anything can go amiss now.

    Update- all done. Phone software is now updated. All sitting here in Bombay, India.

    You can update ALL 5800’s using Phoenix Service Suite and Navifirm. Navifirm will enable you to download all software for all BB5 handsets - you can even download the firmware for the new 5800i if you wanted to. Navifirm will show all the product codes and variants. Choose your firmware variant, download it, install it with Phoenix and you have v4. Dont bother mucking about with NSU and Nemesis - Phoenix will change the product code for.

    Waiting for my 5800 to arrive in a couple days. With the new firmware, it looks like a truly excellent device. However, I wonder why Nokia does not stop taking acids, and include a less sci-fi, more elegant looking theme.

    Correction to my earlier post. You can update all 5800s RM-356 to v4 using Phoenix. 5800 RM-427 and Rm-428 are still at v3. I have tried installing different RM firmware ie RM-356 firmware on a RM-428 phone but Phoenix gave an error. Be very careful if you try this.

    UPDATE:
    Spoke with one of my friends at Nokia Care here in the United Arab Emirates, and he mentioned that a v60 was on its way. Didn’t know how much truth was in his statement, so I decided to follow up with this dude I knew who worked in Nokia MEA division. He said that there were talks going on about a newer, stable version for the 5800. When I asked him where the talks originated (as he wasn’t in the tech department), he didn’t give a straightforward response.

    Though if there is a newer update, I can only assume that the main feature they will add kinetic scrolling functionality to ALL menus and the Web browser.

    Fingers crossed.

    @Richard Post # 185

    The instructions to change the Product code are listed at the very top of this forum in the line “If you can’t wait you can always try changing product code to get the update instantly (do it at your own risk).”

    The link sends you to Mobile Solution Blog which gives step-by-step instructions complete with screen-shots. You have to download the NSS Software and I had to Google the file name to download the file from an alternate location.

    Please note that if the Nemesis Service Suite (NSS) does not work correctly, then you can completely “brick” your phone, so be VERY careful, and if anything does not work as expected, back out and STOP immediately.

    I had no problems whatsoever when I followed the procedure. I have now used ver 40 for over a week with no issues.

    Any further questions, just yell.

    Regards,
    Raymond

    Thanks for the info. I have had Nokia phones for approx. 12 years now, and NEVER needed any support from Nokia, so I am not worried.

    Nonetheless, when I got my 5800, it had a code of “0575950″ and now (after the upgrade) it still has a code of “0575950″ since I re-set the code back to what it was. This perfectly matches the sticker under the battery.

    I would love to know how Nokia are going to know that the code has ever been changed.

    Thanks,

    @hub:
    Yes, I am in Dubai, but purchasing a phone in one country and updating it in another doesn’t clink, in my opinion. You may surely change your product code, but I don’t recommend that. Just be patient, and the update will come your way soon enough. :D And no, I don’t think that you’ve been cheated, unless you bought the phone from one of the local shops instead of authorized dealers (like Axiom, Cellucare, Emirates Telecom, APTEC, etc)

    @Raju:
    It has been noticed that the update doesn’t work via a hub or something similar, and I think I read this warning officially on Nokia somewhere. Anyways, if you’re using a desktop computer, try plugging the device in a USB port behind the CPU, not the front ones. The front USB ports are connected externally, and in some cases might be detected as hubs or external ports by softwares. So, try plugging in one of the ports behind your PC. Hope that helps.

    @bahadrr
    Those words seem strangely familiar… :D
    @Uncensored:
    You have to take into consideration the computing power of the phone as well. The 5800 has a speed of 369 MHz (single core ARM processor) and the Sony Ericsson Satio is 600 MHz, so it’s not fair to compare the two. It’s like comparing a Ferrari with an Audi R8 (the 5800 is the R8 in my opinion :D ). If you’re too much into taking photos with your phone, the 12.1 megapixel camera of the Satio is undoubtedly unbeatable, but if you’re into listening to music (which you’d be a dolt if you’re not), then the 5800 is the phone for you.
    For a more detailed comparision, follow this link:

    http://www.jawal123.com/PublicPages/Compare.aspx?IDs=-50027529_-1731713754_

    And I don’t think you can rollback to a previous software update…that’s pretty much the whole point, isn’t it?
    However, if you find that the update is slowing down your mobile (which it shouldn’t), do a hard reset on your phone (press the green key, the red key and the camera key and switch on your phone) and reinstall the software update. How to do that? Simply open the Ovi Suite (version 2.0.2.42) and connect your phone. Go to Tools> Software Updates and select Reinstall. If that doesn’t work, chuck your 5800 out of the window and jump after it to end yourself.

    @Jenny:
    Wise move, old girl. :D
    @gaze:
    Nopes, sorry buddy, but that ain’t gonna happen. The reason’s that the two devices use absolutely different technologies. You’re asking if it’s possible to fit a plane’s engine into a motorbike (the effect might be mesmerizing, I suppose…). The iPhone uses a capacitative screen, which, in simple words, recognizes touch via the electron transfer from your finger. And that is why it is multi-touch enabled, because it can distinguish two different streams of electrons. The 5800 has a resistive screen, which basically works by sensing the pressure variations on the points on the screen. Just try looking at your 5800 in bright sunlight (with the screen blank) and you’ll notice lots of tiny dots arranged in a pattern. They’re the sensors the phone uses to detect touch.
    Therefore, the 5800’s hardware limits the ability to develop multi-touch. However, if you want that kinda thing on your phone, a coupla months ago I’d have advised you to wait for the new shipment from Nokia in which it ported 5800s with capacitative screens, but those rumors were quelled by Nokia. :( So go to a techie, preferably one of those Chinese dudes who’re geniuses at swapping phone hardwares and ask him to replace your device’s screen with a capacitive one. Mind you but, this will void your warranty. So, do this at your own risk.

    Hope I was helpful.

    Hi,

    Good ; kinetic scrolling is better, but not so important to me.

    Bad: if like me you use the alphanumeric pad for typing notes, messages, calender entries etc. you can no longer use it in landscape mode! I find it by far the quickest way to type with the stylus and now i will have to turn the phone every time i go to type, as i generally view everything in landscape too (easier to read).
    Not impressed Nokia!

    Question: Is there ANY way of returning to the previous software version (30) as this is a big turn off for me??????

    there really should be warnings if you are going to loose a function or capacity like this. Next time I will read here first before updating!

    Thanks

    Please email me at paul-grillo@hotmail.com if you know how to return to previous software version?

    I just got the v31 update one day ago. Still no v40 in Belgium though… Hope it comes very soon because I’m getting tired of seeing other people in other countries getting newer software and bug fixes every time.. I’m really starting to hate this Nokia, I know I shouldn’t say this on this form, but at least an iPhone gets the same update on the same day all around the world.. Nokia could learn something valuable of this..

    @Emil..
    Could it be that you have to choose alphanumeric and then just put it in landscape, and it switches to qwerty? I have no idea if it would work, but it’s worth the try…

    Ok guys, I think I know how it might work when you have contract phone. I have V30.0.011 software on my 5800. The software version date is 29-06-09. But CUSTOM version’s date is 21-08-2009!! So you can guess what that might mean! It can take almost two more months for the bloody mobile network providers to come up with custom version. So I can wait for V40 until the beginning of march! @Jonas:

    The thing is, Vodafone and other carriers modify firmware versions, so Nokia doesn’t release the update to the carrier’s product codes. The carriers have to ask Nokia to release the firmware updates for their product codes. But if Nokia would do a better job, they would release it immediatly without letting the carriers put their trash in it, that would be more convinient. For example, you don’t see Vodafon’es or Orange’s trash in the iPhone, then WHY THE HELL should we see it in our dearly beloved 5800’s?

    I am not sure what to suggest since I got no such error. I can say that I am on MTN. After changing the phone code, I tried to update with OVI Suite but it stated there were no updates available, even with the code changed. Only then did I download and install the latest NSU (ver 01.08.010.40008) and I updated without error.

    Also, after I changed the product code with NSS, I re-read the settings in NSS to confirm it had been changed.

    You may want to try:
    * Switch off and Switch on the phone after changing the code
    * Uninstall and re-install NSU.

    As a last resort, you can try downloading the firmware and flashing the phone using JAF, but this is very dangerous! See post @Raymond #7 under “Nokia 5800 v40 Hack Now Available: Get Those Unsigned Apps Now!”.

    The update is available in Bangalore, India. Go to nearest Nokia care center and get the update. It was not available thru OTA (Over the Air) or NSU (Nokia Software Updater) for me. The update look good let to explore. Enjoy!

    Does anyone know when the new software is available for the USA?
    I have been waiting for more than a month with the NSU. I live in a pretty rural area so going to a nokia store is not an option. So if anyone knows please get back to me.

    Alarm bug in v40.0.005! I updated my RM-356 a few weeks ago; while the improvements are worthwhile, there is a bug in the Alarm function. When the phone is in locked mode, I can’t turn off the alarm function. You can tell the screen touch button works as it changes color, but nothing happens. Ultimately, I have to press the red “hang up” button to snooze it, and it will come back alive in 10 min (or whatever the duration is set for snooze). This is same for any reminder, schedule meetings. It’s driving me crazy! Does anyone know of any fixes or updates?

    p.s. I have a Singapore purchased phone, but had Mandarin Chinese firmware installed by Nokia center in China so I can use the simplified Chinese text. When I upgraded via PC Suite, it went back to the default language version. Could it have anything to do with this?

    OK, I finally got v31 today!! What a joke!! The original v31 version was released in September! And it took Orange more than 5 months to release their custom version!!! Lazy, procrastinating bastards!!! So I guess I can wait for v40 at least 3 more months! What a rip-off!!

    TO vision
    yeah I know I just checked it out now. I think I’ll go to some Nokia store for update or to orange to update my phone with original not their own custom “made off” update OR I just change product code, which is risky, but IF after update I change it back to my PC, then its ok…takze by to malo byt v pohode ale pokakany orange si nedokaze pohnut, pisal som im este v januari a povedali mi ze dany update bude do 2 az 3 tyzdnov a prd, este ten email mam a idem im odpisat !

    The update is available now for North American phones. Does anyone know how to change the slide unlocker feature or is that permanent in the new update and can not be changed? Thanks
