Nokia 5800 just got a new firmware update in the form of version 31.0.008/ 31.2.008. The update brings some performance improvements and better maps for your Nokia 5800. But unfortunately, there is still no sign of the much expected kinetic scrolling or a new home screen.
The firmare update comes with a new version of Ovi Maps 3.0 which offers improved maps and enhanced pedestrian and drive navigation. Some general device improvements are also noticed. The update is not available for all product codes yet but may soon be available for all in next few hours/ days. Lets see the changelog this firmare offers.
Official Changelog:
Improved Navigation with Ovi Maps 3.0
Improved Performance
Other changes noticed:
Better response from touch screen
Free RAM improvements
We will update the changelog list when we notice more changes.
The firmware v31 was first rumored in dailymobile forums 2 days ago when it got available for one member but was not available for anyone else. Nokia just released the update few hours ago officially. We also got alerted by our users- “NiceOne”, “Tero”, etc. Thanks buddies!
How to Update:
The firmware update should be available for you by one of the following methods-
1) Via Over the Air (FOTA): Just enter *#0000# on your dial screen of your phone, then go to options- check for updates.
2) Via Nokia Software Updater (NSU) Utility: Download the NSU here if you dont have already. Connect your device to your PC/ Laptop, start NSU and check for update.

If both methods fails for you, the update may not be available for your product code. Check at the Nokia website here if you are eligible for the firmware update by entering yout product code.
Note: Though the Nokia 5800 has User Data Prevention (UDP) feature which protects your settings and data while you update the phone but its always advisable to backup your data before updating the firmware.
Let us know in the comments below if the update is available for you and for what product codes. Also share your experience on what changes you notice with the firmware update.

Btw love the homescreen ans the kinetic scrolling…..!!!

ahh good stuff just updated, praying that the bluetooth connection with car stereos is better now, was really unreliable before.
@Kavan Marambe i find this very hard to believe…
Monday, September 14th, 2009 at 11:07 pm
I don’t suppose they have fixed the artwork compatibility in the music player in spite of the fact that the 5800 is a ‘music’ phone
Monday, September 14th, 2009 at 11:09 pm
Yeah the news !
@ Kavan : photos ?
Monday, September 14th, 2009 at 11:11 pm
@Kavan- Thats a surprise
, I sent you a mail.
Monday, September 14th, 2009 at 11:29 pm
IanDub, probably not because they are stupid like that, but if you want your album art to work, you have to edit it using tagging software such as mp3tag, and set the album art as the front cover and make sure it has no comment, otherwise nokia phones usually will not display the artwork, currently there is no batch way of doing this afaik however the developer of mp3tag is planning on implementing it in a future release
@Kavan Marambe if you expect us to believe this post up your product code so we can see for ourselves..
Monday, September 14th, 2009 at 11:48 pm

Hey Kavan,
Could you upload any photos for proves you have v40?
it’s a rumor on the web that a v.40 exists at all, and you wrote something most of us just dream about.
I hope you could upload a few photos and/or a short video of you 5800, so we all will have something to wait for.
Thank’s

Tuesday, September 15th, 2009 at 4:49 am
Just updated from v21.0.025 and noticed that the home screen icons don’t decrease in size even after you change the font size which worked in earlier firmware versions. Is this a new change or was this also in the v30 update ?
Tuesday, September 15th, 2009 at 7:53 am
Kavan Marambe – You’re just bluffing, don’t you? If not, you should have (at least) posted some screenshots for proof.
Well, Firmware v31.0.008 is now available in Malaysia via NSU (not yet for FOTA). Always do backup of your contents before update your firmware.
For tagging the album artwork cover into the mp3, I use Mp3tag software. I make sure the size of the album cover is between 300 x 300 pixel. Cheers~!
Tuesday, September 15th, 2009 at 7:57 am

Tuesday, September 15th, 2009 at 10:56 am
I guess no updates for Middle East.
I live in Saudi Arabia now and my devise is Middle Eastern.
and i have a question ..
Are they any differences between firmware update from My 5800 and firmware update from Nokia Software Updater using my PC..?
Because the file which should NSU download it was more than (100 MB)
and the update from my 5800 was just ~4 MB.!!!
Tuesday, September 15th, 2009 at 11:29 am
Not available from NSU in Finland yet, but many have said FOTA works. Through FOTA patch size is about 6 MB and NSU about 100 MB.

When I try to back up my 5800 to the E: drive it always gets to about 95% and just stops. Anyone any ideas about what might be causing it to hang? I’ve not got any apps running except File Manager and there’s loads of space on the card.
Tuesday, September 15th, 2009 at 2:43 pm
My tube has 30.0.011 version. FOTA didnt find anything either…
@admin – I have installed OVI 3.0 manually using some .sis file. Is there any change between the one that I installed and the new one that’s integrated with the 31.0.??? firmware?
Tuesday, September 15th, 2009 at 2:52 pm
for those who are stuck to 21 or 30:
DEBRAND YOUR 5800!!! What are you waiting for??? Kavan dressed like Santa Claus who brings you v50 with interstellar connection?? Just install Nemesis on your pc and do that! Search on google, It’s very simple.
About this Update:
- I don’t give a s**t about ovi maps 3.0!!
- Speed always the same
- DIFFERENCE: now when I download the mail or connect to Internet the phone automatically connects to the available W-Lan without prompting to choose (Thanks to God)
UPSET because:
- they don’t put SIP calls
- they don’t fix the “unread mail” icon bug
- they don’t fix the bugged and stupid zoom in image viewer
- they don’t fix the album cover compatibility
- they don’put kinetic scrolling and home features like 5530
But 5800 is still a supernice phone that i use for everything and it works very well!
Tuesday, September 15th, 2009 at 3:43 pm
My 5800 is now a LOT faster… Thats the only thing I saw that changed… I think I will anyway get a N97 very soon :p
By the way, for those who has the blured screen problem, I found out a kind of solution. Sometimes, I dont know why, my phone screen became unreadable. I did this thing yesterday and it worked for like 99/100 times : i lock the screen with the side button, then i hit the power on button, and… Its magic : screen became just normal
If it can help anyone who had this problem.
For now, since update, the problem didnt show up anymore
Tuesday, September 15th, 2009 at 5:00 pm
for the first time im saying this after having my 5800 for 8 months n visited this website for 7 months…i WILL get a htc hero when it comes out.
ive sent a very angry letter to htc people because they r not comfirming when htc hero is coming out in indonesia.
so.. i will say thank you to tube5800 for everything n helping me to win the mobisuite contest..
i will be around..bye
Tuesday, September 15th, 2009 at 5:01 pm
I think we would forget about kinetic scrolling and other “n97-like” stuff…I think that we will never see this things on our phone…
Tuesday, September 15th, 2009 at 5:57 pm
I have to make a correction about the automatic login to Wi-Fi.
After the update it changed the Internet preferred account from “always ask” to “internet” group. I set it back and it’s working like before the update.
Tuesday, September 15th, 2009 at 6:06 pm
guess 5800XM owners here in the philippines are being left out. V30xxx and V31xxx are not yet available, i wonder why… if someone here has direct contact with nokia please tell them that there are nokia phone owners not too happy right now…
Tuesday, September 15th, 2009 at 6:42 pm
again: UNBRAND IT.
Install Nemesis, do the job and stop complaining.
Do you think Nokia can do an upgrade expecially for you?
Tuesday, September 15th, 2009 at 6:58 pm
Here in Portugal, no updates (RM-356).
Still on v21.0.025.

Tuesday, September 15th, 2009 at 7:44 pm
Oxade,
Regarding the ‘blurred screen’ problem, this is a hardware fault in the LCD. I had this problem and initially I was able to work around it with a lock unlock, but after a while this stopped working and I had to switch on the camera and then exit before I could read the screen.
I took the phone into an authorised repair centre and they replaced the LCD for free. Nokia phones have a european wide 2 year warranty so even though I bought the phone on eBay they still repaired it with no questions asked. The screen has been perfect since the LCD replacement.
Cheers,
Chris.

In portugal, update has been released, my 5800 is unlocked….
Tuesday, September 15th, 2009 at 8:56 pm
change the product code to something like 0559368. Then do an update. Warning: will definitely void your warranty.
Tuesday, September 15th, 2009 at 9:30 pm
Got the latest version in Bulgaria.
I got the update notification via OVI Suite 2 Beta and downloaded it OTA.
(While updating I received the email from tube5800 about the update
)
Cheers!

Tuesday, September 15th, 2009 at 10:38 pm
I just found a bug in my v30.0.011.
On the phonebook, open one of your contact. in the display will show you your contact detail such as name, phone number etc with icon. While you open the contact detail, change your phone to landscape, you missed the icon.
Wednesday, September 16th, 2009 at 12:30 am
All these other messages here are pretty useless without people saying what region they’re in!
I’m in the UK; when I try the update, it says ‘No Updates Available’ also. My firmware is still V21.0.025.
While we’re on the subject, the Nokia Software Updater from their website doesn’t install on my PC: it starts, then after I accept T&Cs, it gives message: ‘Installation operation failed: The system cannot find the file specified’. Very useful, thanks a bunch Nokia!
Wednesday, September 16th, 2009 at 1:04 am
It is not correct to say changing product code will *definitely* void your warranty, it MAY void your warranty. I changed mine several times and afterwards had no problem getting my LCD replaced under warranty. Personally I think it’s worth the risk, if you need a repair there’s still a good chance they’ll do it without checking or even caring if you have changed product code.
Wednesday, September 16th, 2009 at 1:51 am
@millstop
It’s useless if you don’t tell the software type too
Mine is RM-356. Still on v21.0.025.
Wednesday, September 16th, 2009 at 6:27 am
@Kavan Marambe, what if you provide us with your product code ;P
that way we’d all get to have that v40 firmware ;O I believe
( mine is updating right now :w00t: )
Wednesday, September 16th, 2009 at 10:50 am
Mine’s RM-356. Already updated to v31 since yesterday. I’m from the Philippines. =D
Wednesday, September 16th, 2009 at 11:53 am
and if you want you can set back the product code to the original version.
I’m sorry I don’t remember now the product code I put in mine. And I have no Nemesis installed here to check. But I think a standard Euro version is OK, of course if you use the phone in English! (and EVERY device SHOULD be used in English)
Wednesday, September 16th, 2009 at 12:04 pm

Wednesday, September 16th, 2009 at 1:56 pm

To update through OTA? or through the phone?
maybe is a “fresh install” if the install is made from the phone? . _. ?
Wednesday, September 16th, 2009 at 7:38 pm
I live in the united arabs emirates,i just updated from 21 to 30..

Wednesday, September 16th, 2009 at 8:23 pm
Still no new FW in NSU for RM-356 in Finland. I try tomorrow OTA in school.
Wednesday, September 16th, 2009 at 8:51 pm
I updated from v30.0 to v31.0.008 trough the phone with no problems! And i think the phone is a little faster than before
Wednesday, September 16th, 2009 at 10:14 pm
This seems to be the fastest firmware so far. After the update there is a noticeable performance gain, most screens display faster, especially the applications menu. I downloaded the update using NSU with a modified product code for Eastern Europe.
Wednesday, September 16th, 2009 at 10:30 pm
@ Sepehr
Have you tried a hard reset? I had same problem and that worked. But before you make a hard reset, remember to backup ALL settings!
Hope that helps
Wednesday, September 16th, 2009 at 10:34 pm
Hey All
[To Sepehr: plz read the note]

I doubt the V.40 thing
I’m from Egypt
My Tube RM-356
when I purchased my 5800 months ago it was on v.11 and I upgraded to v.21 through NSU
a while ago v.30 was realeased but it kept unavailable for my piece on NSU nor OTA.
I had to manually update the software after I downloaded the file for my piece from a forum and used the repairing programs that technicians use :S
it updated but it gave me some issues that were really bugging me.
after I read now that a new version is available I tried my piece’s code on nokia site to check for update and I found only v.30 available now
but when I checked OTA I found the v.31 avalable and I think I’ll do it tonight after backin up my stuff.
I’ll tell you what goes on later
To Sepehr:
I had the non working home screen shortcuts too
and to overcome it at that time I just had to change the theme of the homescreen to the [contact bar] theme >>> the shortcuts work but the green button is still not working from the home screen.
anyway the problem disappeared after I hard reset the phone and also formatted my 8GB Nokia memory card.
I think there’s something related to the card with this problem.
I hope it works for you.
Wednesday, September 16th, 2009 at 10:49 pm
BTW: What is that Nemesis???
can anyone give us the details of this Nemesis? and what it does?

Thursday, September 17th, 2009 at 3:56 pm
Installed v31.0.008 via FOTA yesterday. So far so good, the touch screen has a little better response now.
To solve the Shorcuts bar problem (bug), just delete 10275102.cre from c:\private\10202BE9\persists\ and restart. Before this I needed to hard reset, not anymore
I’m very happy with my red 5800XM (Portugal, Optimus operator).
Thursday, September 17th, 2009 at 6:33 pm
I tried to update my phone (v30) via NSU in the morning, but updater said that I have latest FW. Well, at school I tried OTA on WLAN and I got immediately a message that new version is available (v31).
Any news when Ovi Suite is going to be released? PC Suite sucks.
Thursday, September 17th, 2009 at 7:03 pm
Kavan Marambe can you add some screenshots
Thursday, September 17th, 2009 at 10:54 pm

Sign the petition to nokia for kinetic scrolling and a better homescreen! God knows if it will help but…
Sunday, September 20th, 2009 at 6:55 pm
Can someone please help me?
When I checked at the Nokia site, my product code (0559953) is ready for an update to v31. But when I use the nokia software updater, it tells me that my software is already up-to-date. But my software is still v21. How can I possibly update my software to v31? I’m from the Philippines by the way.
Thanks
Monday, September 21st, 2009 at 9:49 pm

If you’re on T-Mobile in the UK and still waiting for updates, you might want to add your voice here – http://support.t-mobile.co.uk/discussions/index?page=forums&topic=80103801a100d450123df7d1814007fa4.
I read this morning that they’re speeding up updates for the HTC Hero due to feedback on the forums, and so I’ve started up my own topic asking for fairness for all customers, and for the updates for the 5800 to also be sped up (if they’re considering them at all).
Lets put some pressure on them – we all pay them the same amount for our phones, so we should all get the same level of service.
Wednesday, September 23rd, 2009 at 4:52 pm

Wednesday, September 23rd, 2009 at 10:35 pm
Please try updating your phone with
1) Nokia Software Updater (aka PC Suite) (I haven’t get it ever work)
2) FOTA = through phone (*#0000#) (Updating works via GPRS or WLAN)
3) Ovi Suite by Nokia (Haven’t tried yet, but it’s still BETA!)
4) Deliver your phone to the market you bought it from and demand free/inexpensive maintenance
I have RM-356 (with v21 as new) and I tried updating it through NSU (July). It didn’t work, but through GPRS I got it to v30 (July). After some dissapearing icons and start up problems with memory card, I hard reseted my phone (July/August). After hard reset, start screen mailbox appeared. My free internet ended and then I tried to update to v31 with NSU. As you can know, it didn’t work, but through WLAN I got it to v31 (comment 83). I opened Ovi Maps and program said that I had old maps and it suggested to delete old ones. I did, and then updated with Nokia Maps Updater and downloaded new maps from Nokia Map Loader. All works now, except some installed apps dissapeared after hard reset.
Hope my tips helps!

Finally went ahead and changed my product code to 0574994 for my NAM phone. Was previously stuck with v21. It definitely appears to have been worth the effort.

Hi folks,
I got my 5800 here in Brazil sponsored by TIM The firmware version they have available is 20.0.012. I´m experiencing some halts and freezing on many
situations… The NSU does not allow me to upgrade due some stupid regional settings or model number. Do you know where can I find the last 5800 firmware
version available without using the NSU? Is ther a site that I can donwload and install bypassing this stupid limitation?
Thanks in advance!

@PJ
Pj, yes, Nokia Care Updated my device to v31. when I first asked, they said they had version 21. that’s fine with me so i gave them my phone to update. When they gave it back, they told me they updated it to version 31. i checked it & indeed my phone has v31 installed. its all free too since my phone is still under warranty. the branch that did my phone is Nokia Care Iloilo. hope you get your update soon!

NAM users now have the upgraded version of software version V 31.2.101
for RM-428 dated 14-10-2009.
Changes noticed:
1. Faster response times
2. On connecting the headphone it no longer prompts for mode to connect
3. Nokia update prompted for newer maps though it seems the same
Not sure of the email shortcut appearing on the home screen because it doesnt for me
