Fring Updated to v4.00.05, Brings Video VoIP Calls to 5800s
Filed Under Nokia 5800 Applications,Nokia 5800 News
Popular VoIP app on the mobile platforms, Fring just got better with the recent update to v4.00.05. The app which we have been often overlooking to Nimbuzz now dislodges Nimbuzz from the top VoIP app for 5800, for its video calls over VoIP functionality, a feature that is available only in Fring as of now.
We have also noticed several other advantages with Fring when compared to Nimbuzz, the most prominent being the data usage during VoIP calls. On an average we found that Nimbuzz uses 4 times more data traffic than Fring for VoIP calls. Thats another reason, to get Fring on your 5800. Wanna know more? Screenshots-
Like every other VoIP app, Fring supports a wide range of IM and SIP services, bringing easy access to IM chats and VoIP calls to 5800ers. For VoIP calls, users can now chose between a voice call and a video call, which works very much like a 3G video call, meaning the front camera of the 5800 will be used during the video call.
What we Like?
- Video calls over VoIP
- Easy to use interface
What we don’t like?
- No smileys (2D or 3D)
- Interface not as polished as that of Nimbuzz
Verdict
As we mentioned earlier, Fring is now our top VoIP app for 5800s and that is thanks to its video over VoIP feature along with its thrifty data usage. While the absence of smileys and the not so impressive interface may deter fans of Nimbuzz, video calls and low data usage may just drive the bulk of Nimbuzz users to Fring. We are staying with Fring for now and lets see if Nimbuzz responds with an update enabling video calls on VoIP, taking the battle to the next level.

Hi
I really liked to install that on a same day when fring revealed this video call version.
But one problem is that 3G network is neccessary to use video call or work in WIFI but It wont work in EDGE network.I dont know why EDGE network is not bad too. I can go for voip call but I cannot do video call. Wish fring video call also support edge network.
Is there anytechnical reason for it? in Edge network Application cannot use front camera to transmit video over edge network? but I connect mypc and use same network and use webcam.

Honestly, I’ve loved Nimbuzz from the start even though it lacks some things (VOIP amongst other things). I also like that it is available to use on the desktop too and is just seamless to switch from phone to PC.
But fring’s latest update is really great. Though I wish they actually put icons next to buddies of their networks, and overall, just had a polished interface like Nimbuzz, the video calls work excellently even if you’re not on wifi.
I’m still not sure whether or not I’m gonna stick with Nimbuzz or switch over to Fring, but the VOIP video calling has really added to fring’s arsenal.
