Bored of your 5800 homescreen? How about giving it the looks and functionality of Nokia N97 or the Samsung i8910? Not only that you can customize your 5800 homescreen the way you want it to be. Thanks to this amazing application- GDesk, 5800ers can now add more functionality to that 3.2″ homescreen.
To be honest we feel 5880er were largely let down by Nokia with their latest firmware not bringing the 5530 like scrollable contacts screen and music player widget to our 5800 homescreen. But the device and platform is so powerful that we don’t have to rely on Nokia alone for our customisation needs. Hit the jump button to see if GDesk is good enough to give our 5800 a makeover.

Don’t they look cool? We are already sensing the restlessness of our readers to get these homescreens on their 5800s. Well, you gotta put some effort into this but thanks to Pesiran, a forumer at dailymobile.se for sharing his creations with us. The above two homescreens are his creations and we are so bowled over by his work. Great work Perisan!
Now lets get into the nitty-gritty of GDesk: before you can start customising your homescreen, you need to install a host of gdesk applications (there are 7 in total) which you can then use to customize your homescreens. Once installed you can invoke the GDesk application from the apps menu and what you see is a blank screen with windows like functionality. You can start customising the different aspects of your homescreen using the several options here or you can just use pre-downloaded gdd files like the ones we showed from Pesiran above. We would suggest the latter for most users but yeah advanced users can toy with the former and share your handiwork with us here.

Verdict
GDesk is an amazingly powerful customization application. A right mix of creativity and practicality can take our 5800 to further extents and we don’t even have to rely on Nokia for that. The excellent adaptations of N97 and i8910 homescreens prove the versatility of this amazing application. We must confess that creating a homescreen is by no means a cakewalk but thanks to our friends like Pesiran, we can always rely on art connoisseurs like him to customize our homescreens. Further the GDesk community is pretty active and humming with several creative ideas and an excellent platform for enthusiasts to share their work and get help from other GDesk users.
In all, if you just wish to customize your homescreen but don’t have the time and patience to create your own, rely on designs from Pesiran and the like. If you are the creative type an wish to create your own homescreen, you are welcome to do so and for both cases GDesk is a must have.

I installed GDesk on my Nokia 5800 and when I launched the application all I got was a blue screen with nothing on it. And when I touch the screen I get a drop-down menu with lots of function but nothing that helps with the “design”. I tried to find some on their website but none for 5800…
what did I do wrong ? Can someone help me ? I’ll be very thankful.

Any link for a homepage, or details on price or whether it’s Freeware? It looks very good, although I do agree about the need for seven apps, when one SIS file would have been a lot simpler!

Well i tried this app ..its not that great…..i agree its difficult to use..n u dont get the feeling to use the phone…well this app should have been more like the myphone app..gdesk should have used the concept of myphone..well i hope nokia launches the new firmware updates as soon as possible….Nokia are disappointing their 5800 users ….

I had this Application Long ago. Lacks very basic features. Like you cannot Dial Numbers, and it doesn’t show any Bluetooth or WiFi notifications. Not even Missed calls.
A few revisions will make it better. But its still resource consuming on the phone.

For loading designs: Select Load design from the drop down menu and then locate the gdd files on device memory/memory card.
For expired certificate: Try resigning the sis files or try this link
And yeah, the app lacks the basic notifications but soft buttons for contacts and options do work..

I also got an error about an expired certificate for GDeskTaskManS60.0.33g.sis. But the worst thing is that the battery was drained from fully loaded to two bars in about 16 hours of almost continuous stand-by. Only by uninstalling it and restarting the phone got rid of this problem.

I played around with GDesk for a couple of hours, it is difficult to use but very powerful. I also sampled a couple of published desktops. In the end I decided I don’t have time to design an attractive and functional interface and quit the app.
WARNING: However the next day suddenly my 4 shortcut menu items disappeared from the home screen. I tried a soft reset and firmware reinstall but no dice. I had to hard reset to fix this. Won’t be using it again unless it gets relaunched with bug fixes and comes with usable attractive desktops.

WARNING !!!
My phone is not hacked, only trusted apps isntalled on it to avoid frequent crashes I was having.
But right after I installed GDesk my phone started to behave very weird, the first thing was freeze when I received a call.
After that some Java apps were shutting down with no reason…
then I uninstalled GDesk and everything went back to normal.
Just to comment I do have the latest firmware and also the new Java on my phone.
I am starting to HATE nokia more and more because the no consideration on what we ask them which is a true firmware update accomplishing what N97 and others had.

have installed this one on my phone,I was’nt able to install the last .sis file but it is still working fine with my phone, the omnia home screen is easier to use than of n97, I can’t use the contacts bar. the landscape mode is not working also but still im using it for its cool features…I guess you have to use stylus when editing your homescreen but after that you can use your fingers.. nice apps. thanks. to nokia: go to hell! all you care about is business!!!!

Hassan Who told you that RAR are executable extension so that you can install with them, they are archive extension that means all files inside are zipped you have to use WinRaR/WinZip/7Zip to extract them and be able to install. If you are using a phone you can search for them on getjar.com or google.com

If you really want to HARD RESET your phone, this is a valable reason witch will let you lose your Default homescreen bars ! Do it and and lose all !

Gdesk 0.33g is a freakin’ super app! Much better than ANYTHINK that mmmooo has EVER come up with! It takes a little thinking to customize everything to your own liking, but when you get the hang of it … BY JOVE! hehe … Just think about that gdesk 0.33g just can load designs made for version g.

This is really a good application.
I have loaded htc design.

Wonderful App. Nokia wont pull their finger out so these guys did us 5800 owners a favor. If u can’t use the App – read the instructions, it’s not difficult. Google for designs. I have the N97 design on mine but will play-around with it when I have time.

hello all!
first download gdesk. then extract it. then install all files(extracted folder files) to your phone. then copy .gdd file to any folder in memory card.
now run GDesk from your phone. a blue screen will appear, tap on the screen and mene ll come. click on options, now click on load design,and browse for ur .gdd file u have copied. click on file an d here it is done.
