Google Adds Voice Search to its Symbian App (Finally!)
Google have finally added voice search among other things to their app on the symbian platform and ofcourse we are glad they did. While the google app has been available on the symbian platform for quiet a while now, its no way near to the capabilities of its iPhone counterpart. Breaking the shackles is the voice search option, which takes the app a step closer to the iPhone version.
Its not only the voice search that caught our attention but also the support for mulitple languages which made us sit up and notice this latest update from the internet giant. Hit the jump button to see how things actually pan out on our 5800s.

We gotta confess, the voice search works like a charm and in case you are worried about having a heavy accent, the two videos below should allay your fears:
What we like?
- Voice search is cool
What we don’t like?
- The app is still not as capable as its iPhone version
Vedict
Having burned our fingers with our previous experiences with voice recognition software, we were a little sceptical about the voice search option of google app but not only has it is dispelled all our fears, it has also won a place in our hearts.
If you are an avid browser, the latest google app is definitely a must have. Once you get used to the app, we can assure you that the app is almost indispensable when it comes to your mobile browsing needs. While the app is still a fair distance away from its iPhone counterpart, we are hoping it would get better in the days to come.

it works for me on my n5800 look in applications/google, and start the application, once the app has started press the “call” button not the button on screen . i like it, but you have to talk very clearly for the voice recognition to get exactly what you say.
thanks

Wow…I just tried a few searches with this app, and each time it found exactly what I wanted. I tried things like
“Dean Koontz Bibliography”
or
“Mandarin restaurant”
and both times it recognized what I said (I was shocked that it found the Dean Koontz thing..it must somehow parse voice syllables and reference common search terms to make a match, because obviously this author’s name is not in the English dictionary).
Worked great.
And that annoying “Press C for search” on the home screen (which isn’t applicable to our Nokia 5800′s because we don’t have a hardware keypad) can be easily turned off by going to the application settings. Incredible how fast it is, and how easy to use.
Tube5800, thanks for pointing this great app out. It made the phone 100% more useful for me.

It also doesn’t work on my 5800, i found this article:
http://googlemobile.blogspot.com/2009/11/google-search-by-voice-travels-world.html
scroll all the way down to the end, it says “Note that the application is for version 3 of Nokia S60 – more recent phones running version 5 (touch screen) are not yet supported.”
So, I acutally wonder how some people got it to work on their 5800′s
Help!

On my iphone, the initial google page opens with voice search but then I get a 74.125.67.147/m/gn/ib
when I go to click on a specific link. Anyone have a clue? It has been doing this for several weeks now. Thanks for any help

Guys, it works fine on 5800 in our testing. The screenshots you see above are of the application running on Nokia 5800.

Admin, thanks for the reply (i’m assuming you were reacting also to my post). Of course, I don’t doubt you got it to work on your 5800, i’m just wondering why it works on some 5800′s while it doesn’t work on the others. Please, help, if possible. The application just seems so awesome, i’m dying to use it on my phone! Thanks!

@vision- Buddy, this version is NOT for symbian 5th edition phones like 5800 BUT it “may” work on 5800 just like many many other apps which are developed for s60v3 but yet works fine in 5800.
If this doesnt works for you, the only option is to wait for a proper version for 5800 which should be out soon

Yupieeee!! It seems I don’t have to strain my patience that hard after all! Google just released version 2.03.9, which works on my 5800!! (2.03.8 didn’t work on mine) Download it people! It works absolutely beautifully! Type this URL into your phone’s browser: m.google.com/search

Downloaded the new version on my phone and works excellent. Just one problem , it keeps on connecting to my wireless router. When I am not in an area that has no wireless , then it still just searches for wlan and not using my internet connection through my phone.
Any ideas
thanx
