Memory Status Touch- Memory Info Just a Click Away

With 5800s coming pre-loaded with an 8GB microSD card ever since its launch, our 5800s have become an convenient portable hard drives for most of us. However owing to the rich media support, a major chunk of our 5800 memory is occupied by mp3s and videos.

While memory information can be accessed in file manager, a simple app displaying memory information in an intuitive manner is  the need of the day. Thanks to Offscreen Technologies, our 5800s now has a very simple but yet useful app- Memory Status Touch. Screenshots and reviews after the break:

Screenshots-

Offscr seems to have mastered the art of creating easy to use and intuitive user interfaces. While the app is pretty basic as such, the animation effects are pleasant and informative. However, it would have been better, if the app could display more hardware info.

What we like?

  1. Cool interface
  2. Animation effects

What we don’t like?

  1. Lack of more hardware info on the homescreen

Verdict

Memory status touch is the kinda application which would make life a lot easier for geeks who like to double up their 5800s as a portable hard drive. A simple tap on this application gives detailed memory info for users to decide whether they can rely on 5800 as a backup portable drive. We have been using our 5800s as a portable drive and this app just made life a lot easier for us.

I downloaded this app from the Store application on my phone, and found it to be pretty useless. But, free’s free, eh?

On a different note, I have found a few bugs/errors/technical difficulties with my 5800.

What happens is that when i install a bunch of applications in one go (via my phone), and restart my phone, the following problems occur:
    1. The phone normally takes around 15 seconds for me to start. After these installs, it takes hours.
    2. If I remove my memory card and then restart, the phone will start in the usual 15 seconds. But when I insert my card again, it says ‘Preparing memory card’, which takes a f***ing long time. And if you have ‘UpCode’ installed, it starts automatically.
    3. If you have installed any widgets, they duplicate themselves. FOr example, the FaceBook widget. I installed it and moved it to the ‘Internet’ folder. Why? Well, basically because I want to keep my phone neat and tidy and organized. So after I restart my phone, I find that there are two icons of FaceBook. One in the ‘Applications’ folder, and another in the folder I moved the widget to. Now in the ‘Application Manager’, it lists only one widget installed, when there’re obviously two. So if I try to uninstall the two icons, one will be removed successfully. But for the other it’ll show ‘File Corrupted’. Now the only solution I found to this bullshit thing was to do a hard reset on my phone, since a normal *#7370# had no effect. (Hard reset is done by switching off your phone, and then pressing the red, green and camera button together and then starting up your phone.)

Now another severe problem which I found is that the homescreen becomes unresponsive at times. Especially when I remove the memory card while it says ‘Preparing memory card’. Now I know this might be my own fault, but I still think that this shouldn’t disrupt the home screen. The ‘Telephone’ and ‘Contacts’ button don’t work anymore, and to access the log, I can no longer press the green key. I have to go to ‘Menu’ and then press the green key to bring up the dialler. Now when first this problem occured, I gave my phone to the service center and they replaced the LCD by telling me that this was a ‘serious touchscreen error’. But when I brought my phone back home, and reinstalled the cool apps I had before, I found the same problem. And this I founf out was solved by a hard reset too.

Now another thing is that my memory card is around 6 gB full (the 8 gB one which came with my 5800). The problem is that the volume key, which works as a zoom key as well in image browser doesn’t work properly. I sometimes have to exit and reopen the image browser to get the zoom key to work. Apart from this, I’ve found that the zooming in the camera is slowed too. Now mostly, to zoom, I have to tap my screen and when that zoom bar comes in the corner I have to use that. It’s darn inconvenient. And as a volume button, in the music player it is pretty unresponsive too.
(In zooming I have problems with the upper volume key, and in Music Player I have problems with the lower volume key.)

And my stylus has become very loose. It remains in m pocket at times when I pull my phone out.

And I think that there should be a ‘Lock Phone’ option in the menu instead of ‘Open Calendar’ which appears on the homescreen. The ‘Open Calendar’ option should be shifted to the clock. Like, when I tap the clock, it should open a menu listing ‘Clock’ and ‘Calendar’. Sounds reasonable, eh?

And I’d also love to see alphabets on the keypad when I open my dialer, even though they’re pretty unnecessary. But it’d be visually appealing, according to me.

And the dust around my bezel…I hate cleaning it every now and then. A wipe cloth or something should have come with my phone.

Now here’s another technical problem I face. Basically, my phone has a total of 86 mB. Now it has only 56 mB free. I can’t understand where’s all the phantom memory gone. But I do have a few ideas. When I download an installation file, I think it’s stored in the phone. Any ideas how I can delete those files? I cleared my cache but to no avail. All this because I want my device memory to be as little in use as possible as I think more memory on my phone means faster usage.

Now a few deatails about my phone:
    Software version: v 30.0.011
    Version date: 26/06/09
    Custom version: 30.0.011.C01.01
    Type: RM-356
    Latest Update: Not updated.

My location: Dubai, United Arab Emirates
    My age: 17
    My availability: Single, baby!

    lol

Anyways, here’s another thing which I can’t understand. I update my phone using the Nokia Software Updater, and it still says ‘Not updated’. I think it’s because I have to do it over the air. But it still doesn’t make sense.

And I checked the new 5530 and 5230 with my 5800. From what I found, comparing all the specifications and etcetera, 5800 is still far ahead of them in technology. The only great thing about the 5530 is its look, that I don’t deny. But if you’re a sucker for tech like me, 5800 is your only choice.

Here’s my e-mail. Anyone with any tips, suggestions, just mail me here:

Here’re a few things every 5800 owner should know about the n97.

    The n97 (150 g) is bulkier than the 5800 (109 g). Even the n97 mini (139 g) is heavier.

The n97 mini doesn’t support video calling and push to talk.

The n97 captures videos in VGA compared to the 640×360 pixel resolution in 5800.

Both the n97 and n97 mini don’t have RealPlayer Media Player.

Our 5800 is not EDGE (network dependant) like the n97 and n97 mini.

(All information displayed above is taken directly from the Nokia website. Check it out yourself if in doubt.)

    @Sepehr
    Firstly, are you a girl?

And secondly, your suggestion on reading the comments on v.31 didn’t make sense…since I have mentioned in my post that I’m using v.30. Is it that there’s basically no difference in v.31 and v.30?
