Mr.Snake- Things You Need to Know About Protean Snakes
Filed Under Nokia 5800 Applications
Have you ever seen a live snake? A scary sight for most of us but they are pretty harmless creatures, if left on their own. However if you are hitting the jungle trail over a weekend for a camping trip, you better have some basic info about snakes and related first aid.
You must be wondering why we are lecturing on snakes and first aid, here at Tube5800. No, we didn’t stray off topic but we are very much talking about 5800s. Wondering how? We are actually talking about this edutaining app from Simon Botes called Mr.Snake. Let’s find out what this app has to offer on our 5800s, after the break though.
Screenshots-
The app is more like an e-book than any symbian app and we are not complaining its one of the most informative compilations we have seen on snakes or anything for that matter on the 5800s. The homescreen of the app takes you to the map of South Africa from where you can get province specific information on the reptiles found there along with detailed info on each of the species and emergency numbers to be contacted, just in case you are caught on the wrong foot.
What we like?
- High edutaining quotient
- Emergency numbers are very handy
What we don’t like?
- Emergency numbers are not softcoded for direct dialing from the app
- Limited to reptiles found in South Africa
Verdict
This is easily one of the most edutaining apps we have seen so far on the 5800s. Not only is its informative with its vivid photos and background info, the emergency numbers can be life saving if you ever happen to be attacked by one of these reptiles. However, the app needs some tweaks in the UI along with the issues we listed in the “We don’t like” list. The developer however has promised to work on some of the aspects in the next version of the app.
The app which is the first mobile app of its kind is available for free for download directly on to your mobile browsers at: http://tinyurl.com/yk9uytz
P.S- The developer will also be adding this app to Nokia’s Ovi store soon, where it will again be available as a free download.

Hey guys,
Thanx for a great post.
As per the Emergency number click2call, this is a feature that will be added very soon. The software we used when building this app did not yet have support for click2call - we are howeer working closely with the guys from Origo.com and I am happy to say the snakeguide will soon have working click2call.
I am also looking at adding many more exciting features but as with all free things this will only happen when I have some additional funding.
I designed this app to show what is possible and can easily put guides together for birds, snakes and any other creature for any country, so if you like the idea and want it in your own country, feel free to make contact and lets see what we can do. (All my contact details can be found on the mobi site where you download the app)
I look forward to reading comments from other tube5800 readers.
Regards

The application is a unique idea but I agree with the points the reviewer raised. Why just S.Africa? It should have a comprehensive database covering dangerous snakes from all around.
But overall a good start

Hi Sandy,
Thanx for the comment.
Yes this is the idea. Once I secure more funding I plan to go global and build many more free educational apps.
Personally feel ts better to make smaller localized Mbooks than one large global Mbook. (however I may be wrong) The file would be huge and no one would download. However if we make multiple smaller Mbooks, then ppl can download the Mbooks they want.
But yes, we plan to make many many more of these guides and not only for Snakes. This project is currently only financed by my small salary and so development is slow. If and when I source more funding I will pump out a few great updates.
Have been thinking of putting up a donation page so people can donate towards the project and I could then use the funds to develop further. Paypal does not yet support South Africa to receive donations in this way so there goes that plan. Also this app is very new and I dont as yet have a huge group of fans who want updates. As this community grows things will get better.
Anyway I will not give up and as I make more cash I will improve these free educational guides.
