New Firmware V21.0.025 Selectively Available for Nokia 5800
Filed Under Nokia 5800 News
CHECK UPDATE BELOW
The Nokia 5800 has just received a new firmware version 21.0.025, up from the earlier v20.0.012. This latest firmware update for the Nokia 5800 has started to circulate slowly.
The update is available via NSU for product codes like 0575407, 0575408, 0581337 from some Asian regions only for now. We should hopefully see the firmware being rolled out across the rest of the world soon. Initial reports point towards a better camera and usual “performance improvements”.
Here is a quick changelog the Nokiaaddict guys found in this update-
1. Quicker booting up – It seems to let you ‘take control’ a lot quicker than before.
2. You can now make the menu button ‘breathe’ (slowly light up and fade out) when the phone is in standby. It will flash twice if there is a missed call, message or email.
3. Music Player is showing BIG cover art – something that annoyed me in V20 was the fact the cover art was shrunk.

4. No longer switches predictive text off after you’ve used the Full Screen QWERTY keyboard and gone back to the regular keypad.
5. ‘Applications’ has been renamed ‘Apps’ – ‘Music Player’ is now ‘Music plyr.’ (These could be due to it using HK firmware?!)
6. Still no Widgety goodness on the home screen – it’s as it was in V20.
7. Web Browser isn’t working!!! I will try doing a hard reset I think. Web browser is working fine now and its faster too.
8. Camera wise, there doesn’t seem to be any image improvements IMO – but it seems to work a little bit quicker.
9. Not had chance to test sound through a headset yet – I have personally had issues in V20 with a Stereo Bluetooth Headset so will be interested to check this out.
10. I think the handwriting recognition is improved – I’ve not used this much, but it seems better.
11. During text entry pressing ‘*’ key brings up a fullscreen selection of characters.
Check the Nokia Software Updater (NSU) and see if anything has popped up for your phone and let us know what the update brings with it. Though the earlier version v20.0.012 is still not available worldwide, we dont know how long this latest udpate will take to reach all the users.
The 5800 features user data preservation so you can update without worrying about your data, however a backup is still recommended.
UPDATE (Apr 28):
The update is available now for many more product codes via Over The Air (OTA) and should be available soon via Nokia Software Updater (NSU) too.
To update via OTA, input code- *#0000#. This will display you your current software version. Now go to “Options- Check for Updates” and follow the process to update your phone. It should take less than 5 minutes to download the firmware update, installing the update and restarting the phone.
Changes noticed: The phone seems to be a bit faster now especially the switching from landscape to portrait mode. All the changelog points we have above seems true except the web browser thing. Web browser is working perfectly fine here and infact its faster than earlier.
So lets hope the latest firmware v21.0.025 is available now for most of you. Report back please your experience with the new update. Cheers!

ooops
The new firmware version 21.0.025 is not available in Oman yet.
But I like the earlier v20.0.012, it made many improvments in my phone.
I love my 5800.

Hi, I’m from the Philippines. It seems that there are already two firmware updates for 5800 but those two (v20.0.012 and V21.0.025) aren’t available here. Can someone enlighten me about this? Thanks!

To all whose phone is not yet supported by the update, If you want to update your firmware, just change ve product code using JAF Application, search in the google- Nokia 5800 JAF
Then, if you are worry about the warranty of your phone, don’t worry, it will not void the warranty, because after you update your phone, just change the product code again to its original code, so its the same. Get it? Hope so. Enjoy.

Im on Vodafone UK and there has been no device updates. Can someone tell me where i can get hold of an official firmware that I can flash my 5800 with. Sick of these custom firmwares that are slower and out of date AND dont get updated!
Also, if it bricks when updating is there a solution to hard reinstalling (ala PSP)?
Cheers

When V21 available in Indonesia??
Im still with V20..
Saturday, April 25th, 2009 at 4:50 pm
@Moataz:
You’re welcome.
Have you tried the upgrade process on another computer? It seems that the error depends on some software you’ve installed on your operation system.
If isn’t:
Make a backup of your 5800XM using nokia pc suite.
Try a reset of the phone by putting this sequence in the telephone mode:
*#7370#
Then, retry to update with nokia software update and replace the information in your phone using the backup file.
Saturday, April 25th, 2009 at 4:57 pm
@Moataz: If you have ICS (Internet Connection Sharing) Enabled on ur xp or vista disable it and try to open the updated.. it worked for me.. hope it works for u too

I dont understand, why nokia release newest firmware with bugs…
Monday, April 27th, 2009 at 4:06 pm
really no web browser? is this true????? anyone admin? fabio? HELP
Monday, April 27th, 2009 at 5:00 pm
@Karan- The v21 is not available at our location for now. We will test that as soon as it hits here. IMO, the browser should work ok with this update, if not a hard reset can fix it.
The above changelog is from Nokiaaddict.com guys as mentioned, not from us. So we cant confirm that.
Monday, April 27th, 2009 at 7:59 pm
Hi all, have you tried changing the product code using JAF application? did it solve the problem of updating the software?
@ADMIN, is it safe to change the product code using the JAF application? will it void the warranty of my phone if i use the application?
appreciate your immediate feedback. i can’t wait to have the latest software update on my phone. i think nokia sucks big time when it comes in releasing updates on their phones. why don’t they make any updates available for ALL of their models/units regardless of the location of anyone..
Monday, April 27th, 2009 at 10:49 pm
@Jay- Changing product code to update the firmware and reverting back to original product code again MAY NOT void your warranty. But use JAF at your own risk, you may damage or brick your phone if done incorrectly. We recommend to stay away from it if you don’t know what you are doing.
Tuesday, April 28th, 2009 at 3:29 am
@ADMiN – thank you! My concern is what are my chances in bricking the phone? the way i look at it, changing the product code using JAF is pretty simple. I really want the update but I’m more concerned of the phone after changing the product code. Need advices from you guys.
Tuesday, April 28th, 2009 at 3:40 am
@JAY- Yes using JAF is not that difficult and chances of getting bricked are rare. But still caution is needed and use at your own risk please.
You can go ahead with it if you are too desperate to update your phone and cant wait. Let us know the results. Good luck!
Tuesday, April 28th, 2009 at 7:49 am
no web browser??is it system error when you tried to open web browser??
try hard format it back up your stuff, turn off the phone, take out your memory card, then hold this three button(green, red, camera)and turn on your phone, make sure you hold the three button.v20 also got system error when you try to open search.
Tuesday, April 28th, 2009 at 8:08 am
If u use JAF, make sure that your tube version (color) are match with produck codes. If did not match, appears some bugs (example: Internet will not succeded). I had try 2 kind of product codes into my 5800, and the suitable/match code with our 5800 version is the best improvement with no bugs.

update available in Poland (EURO3 PC) via OTA, installed successfully and working.
Tuesday, April 28th, 2009 at 11:00 pm
Hi, my 5800 is now 100% functional after the update, my issue with WLAN earlier is already ok, i have to restore to factory settings though. Overall, the performance of the phone has greatly improved in terms of its speed in boot up and processing. i can now use the secondary camera to take photos (previously its only for video calls), the response of the touch and screen have also improved. the breathing menu button is somewhat cool but i can’t see any great use for it. all of my apps are also running with ver. 21.

Its showing the size of the update to be only 2.4mb in India.is it that small?
Wednesday, April 29th, 2009 at 8:24 pm
@Jay, Fabio and others- Good to see update finally available for most of you. Explore the new features and bug fixes now, have fun!
@n3m0- Thanks for that long list of bug fixes and new enhancements.
@Raven- your problem seems to be related to the proximity sensor of your phone. The 5800 has a sensor that detects proximity and automatically shuts off the display when it’s against your ear. Make sure the screen protector is not covering the proximity sensor.
@Gagan- Yes its that small, go ahead!

how about egypt?!! still not available
Thursday, April 30th, 2009 at 11:04 pm
@Crack.P- There are mainly 2 ways to update the firmware on your 5800- 1) Nokia Software Updater (NSU) utility, and 2) Over The Air (OTA).
This v.21 update is available via OTA for most of us. Full tutorials and detailed instructions are available here, just look for that please.
And one advice for you- DONT put your email id anywhere online on a forum or blog where it is on display for everyone. You will start getting loads of junk mails from all the spammers who harvest the emails with their tools on popular sites.
Good luck for the firmware udpate!
Friday, May 1st, 2009 at 12:25 am
Hello, and sorry for the question but I don’t know if this bug is related to the new firmware upgrade or it was also in the past… I’ve mailed also the nokia and I am awaiting for an answer.
Here the problem:
I’ve got a lot of sms in the archive, divided in two folders. One folder with almost 2000 sms, another with 40.
I enter the biggest folder and read a message but when I try to move to another (previous or next) message with the upper arrow I receive the error:
Sms: Memory full. Try to close some application and retry.
But ther aren’t applications opened in background and there’s a lot of space in the memory card!
This doesn’t happens in the incoming message folder or in the smaller one of the archive itself.
Any report about this bug?
Friday, May 1st, 2009 at 12:10 pm
@josh – yup i’m a “pinoy” 100%.. i used this 0575408 as the product code. I restored the factory setting ’cause my WLAN connection disappeared after the update. Not sure if it will happen also to you but if it will, restoring it to factory setting will resolve the issue. If it won’t then lucky you..
btw, are u also a filipino?
Friday, May 1st, 2009 at 4:57 pm
Admin — i tryed to update by the update software on my pc but it doesnt find any updates. im not shure why . it may be the place where i live or i dont know ( i live in KOSOVA its near ALBANIA)

i used the HK product code, but alas, no update available
now i’m trying to use the europe product code, hope there’ll be changes
Friday, May 1st, 2009 at 9:55 pm
europe product code still showing firmware v20..
Friday, May 1st, 2009 at 11:06 pm
The v21 update is available via FOTA (maybe) IF you have firmware v20?
because when i try to use NSU, it says no update. but when i try *#0000#, the update available at the size of 3,5MB (it was on indonesia blue product code).
Saturday, May 2nd, 2009 at 12:00 pm
@josh – wala naman effect sa signal so far. I’m using Globe. I still get 3.5G (HSDPA) signal. No fluctuation of signal experienced as of this moment. I would recommend you to revert back to the original product code para its like you didn’t do anything out of the normal.
Sunday, May 3rd, 2009 at 2:11 am
Hi,
Has anybody got the update in the UK yet (using NSU or OTA), without changing the product code?
Many thanks.
Sunday, May 3rd, 2009 at 9:54 pm
I can’t believed it…i just follow the JAF procedure on how to change the code and i successfully updated my nokia 5800 blue edition with product code 0578306…now i am using the v20 of the firmware…and yes it has a lot of improvements specially in the response of the screen and additional features like dictionary and search my content…i can feel that its a lot more faster than my original v11 firmware…at first i have doubts and was afraid to brick my phone…i am encouraging others to update their firmware to experience more the capability of this phone…again just follow the JAF procedure and your on your way to upgrade your firmware without any hastle…but be careful…i used this code 0559950…just a reminder after updating change back your code to its original value…by the way i am a filipino and i am new to this site…tnx and more power…!!!

Tuesday, May 5th, 2009 at 12:28 pm
Hi i’ve just updated my phone to v21, by the way, i’m from the Philippines. I’ve updated it via OTA, it’s easy to update and very worth it. Mine is 5800 blue with the product code of 0578306, i’ve changed it to 0559953 using JAF then boom an update is available and successful. After the update, i’ve changed again my product code to my original product code. It’s so simple and no-hassle at all. I now enjoy more with my beloved Nokia 5800.
Tuesday, May 5th, 2009 at 6:09 pm
@Kyung Jin – yes we do have the same product code.. never heard of the other prod code you’re saying.. may be the RED 5800, for other countries, i believe 5800 with color BLUE, RED, BLACK/GRAY have different product codes.
Wednesday, May 6th, 2009 at 9:27 pm
Hi All. I just got a question. At the moment i have a 5800 blue with code 0575408 (thats what it says on the back of the phone)I have a certain language pack that i installed with some guy later on.
I want to update the phone version to V21 (at moment i have v20)but the update doesn’t go. I use OTA and it recognizes that there is an update (v21) and offers me to do it. After getting the 3.7mb file the phone restarts but doesn’t install the update. So i thought maybe i need to change my product code for it to work? if i change the product code will it work? and if i do change the code, will the language pack i have now go away? please help…
Wednesday, May 6th, 2009 at 11:43 pm
Can anyone tell me why Jaf needs to connect to the internet during set up? My firewall picked it up and I blocked it as really I don’t need the hassle of spyware being downloaded.
Likewise it asked to install a new driver for Nokia?
Thursday, May 7th, 2009 at 1:38 am
@Ron, i think you don’t need to change your product code as you said v21 is available once you tried it, so it’s available for your phone, just try to update it again. Anyway, it will not erase your language pack because once you update your phone, all its settings or whatever there in will not be changed. Type again *#0000# to know if you’ve successfully updated your phone.
Thursday, May 7th, 2009 at 7:17 am

Ronan what is your prod code?
Friday, May 22nd, 2009 at 3:03 pm
@Silver- you can use 0575407 product code for the red one. Revert back to your original code after firmware update.
Saturday, May 23rd, 2009 at 12:07 am
Thank you so much for your quick reply. This is my product code — 0578218. It shows we are still on V20 but upon checking for updates, the updates shows no updates are available. I’ll work on this update this weekend. I’ll get back to you then. Thanks much! more power!
Saturday, May 23rd, 2009 at 12:23 am
@ Admin — By the way, could i make this update possible over my phone to v21? i checked at nokia website and checked the product code you gave me, its still on v11.0.009. please verify. Thank you.

Those who are having issues with finding product codes that support latest firmware should check out the tool NAVIFIRM. Download it here
Tuesday, May 26th, 2009 at 1:08 am
Has anyone noticed that v21.0.25 disappeared from Nokia ?
Using the NAVIFIRM it shows only the versions 10.0.10, 11.0.9 and 20.0.12… for RM-356… one week ago I ckecked and the version 21.0.25 was there…
using OTA and NSU it also doesn’t show the version 21.0.25…
using NSU it would also give the choice to reinstall this version, but now it doesn’t show
and another problem .. a lot of people got the Flash Lite 3.1 update using the update app menu on the phone
but I couldn’t
… and my phone is on the version 21.0.25
what’s going one? is there any idea for that?
I miss my SonyEricsson
