One of the top VoIP clients for 5800 just got better! Nimbuzz which was the first mainstream VoIP client to hit the symbian scene was recently updated to v2.4, tweaking the popular client to match with the requirements of today’s smartphone user.
You already know from our previous reviews that Nimbuzz boasts of a great UI among other things. So what exactly are the additions in the recent update? Does it beat Fring as the top VoIP app for 5800s? Find out after the break.

Before we proceed any further, let’s take a look at the official changelog for Nimbuzz v2.4:
- Online presence to your phonebook – see which of your phonebook contacts are online with Nimbuzz
- Free SMS invites – Invite all your friends for free to Nimbuzz via SMS !
- Faster and more responsive kinetic scrolling – for touch screen devices
- More options for Twitter refresh frequency
- Control Nimbuzz connectivity while in roaming
We are totally on love with the synchronisation of phone contacts with Nimbuzz contacts. It makes way for a seamless VoIP experience in a way we haven’t seen yet on our 5800s! Another thing that we noted was the prompt for entering our phone number, which we assume the app uses to add the option of calling from network/VoIP directly from the Nimbuzz contacts screen.
What we like?
- Kinetic scrolling is the best that we have ever experienced (beats Gravity at times!)
- Customizable Twitter refresh frequency is an amazing option for tweaking your battery/data plan
What we don’t like?
- Absence of video calling feature
Verdict
Nimbuzz used to be our first choice app for VoIP on our 5800s but it changed since Fring updated their client to bring video calling over VoIP to our 5800s. Nimbuzz is yet to bring this feature and we are sticking our guns with Fring for the same reason. However, if video chatting is not your priority, we would highly recommend Nimbuzz for your VoIP needs for it has one of the best UIs for any third party app on 5800s.

Nimbuzz still has the better looking interface compared to Fring. Video calling would be nice, but the UI is so much better. If I had 3G, I’d be tempted to leave Nimbuzz on all day considering it does all the IM and the Twitter interface is finally up to spec.
I’ll keep rocking Nimbuzz, despite not having video calling.

i tried to leave nimbuzz on all day on my 5800. The back gets hot and it seriously drains the battery.
But my nimbuzz has had kinetic scrolling for months now, every since i updated my phone to v50 most apps do.

both of them are useless if you want to use jabber.
Nimbuzz for no reason shut down and fring never supported – though both are supporting jabber based google talk.
For that reason i can only recommend parlingo.
