Nokia 5800 Firmware Update v50.0.005 Rolls Out, Adds Few N97 Goodies

Nokia 5800 Firmware Update v50It’s been a while (three months to be specific), since Nokia last released a firmware update to their best selling touchscreen device-5800Xpress Music and lest you be thinking of Nokia abandoning it’s loyal customer base, we have an update for you. Infact it’s our Finnish friends who have released an update for the 5800 firmware, which to be honest caught us by surprise, considering the update frequency in the recent times for our 5800s.

The latest firmware is v50.0.005 and since Nokia have jumped from v40.*.* to v50.*.*, we are expecting some major improvements. The update is available for a select few product codes (spread across Europe, South America and Asia) at the time of drafting this post and is expected to hit the Nokia Update servers worldwide in a short matter of time. As seen with previous updates, v50.0.005 is available over both Firmware Over the Air (FOTA) and Nokia Software Updater (NSU). While we weren’t able to get the update on our 5800 ourselves, several of our 5800 friends across the globe have been alerting us on the update and we are wasting no time in updating our readers of the same. What’s new in v50.0.005? Find out after the break.

Before we proceed to the changelog of v50.0.005, let’s us remind you how to update the firmware on your 5800s. As mentioned previously there are two methods:

1) FOTA: Just enter *#0000# on your dial screen, then go to options- check for updates

2) NSU: Download and install Nokia Software Updater application, connect the phone to the PC and click check for update

If the Nokia servers return the message “No updates were found for your device”, don’t panic as the update will be released across all product codes over the due course of time. So keep trying!

As of now the product codes for which this update is available are:

  • What’s new?

To be honest, we don’t know for sure for we haven’t got our hands on the update ourselves. But 5800ers across the planet have reported N97ish features including the alphabet display in album scroll in the music player, pre-installation of Quick Office and GetRihanna apps. No news on homescreen widgets though : (

Did you notice any other improvements? Do let us know if you have.

    • Menu has kinetic scrolling
    • Quick office integrated
    • Hide option in music player in place of exit
    • MusicPlayer refreshing very fast
    • One touch dialling and call settings options in dialler

    • OviSync application added
    • Option to enable history list in web browser

Note: It seems this firmware version is not officially out YET by Nokia and it actually got leaked on net before its official release. You can wait for few days before it officially comes out via OTA or NSU or you can flash your phone with these instructions to get your hands on it.

    UPDATE 2:
Firmware update v50.0.005 is officially available now via OTA and NSU for most of the product codes. Though it seems Nokia has not released Quickoffice for all product codes.

This is outrageous. Orange Slovakia 5800′s are still stuck with V31. I swear I’ll never get contract phone ever again! It’s a rip off! It is much better to buy a phone in regular electronics shop and organize monthly installments, one ends up paying the same money!!

FYI, to all those who still don’t have v40, check around to the last post (on here) about it. In the comments section is a guide to changing your product code (voiding the warranty technically, though you can change it back) which will allow you to receive the newest updates. This is the only way that I got my NAM phone to receive v40. All the phones sold by carriers may never get upgraded. It depends on your carrier and if they pay Nokia (or allow Nokia I guess, I don’t know) to get an update to your phone.
      Good luck.

Yea, lucky for some…hell for others. I too am still on V 31.0.101. I have basically checked for update every couple days for several months now waiting for V.4, but to no avail. It is quite unnerving and frustrating to say the least.

I have successfully upgraded my 5800 to v50 as follows:

      1. Downloaded the firmware EXE file from “www.mediafire.com/?d23dyetlzn2″
      2. Ran the .EXE to extract the v50 firmware files to “C:\Program Files\Common Files\Nokia\DataPackage\Products\RM-356\”
      3. Copied the firmware files to “C:\Program Files\Nokia\Phoenix\Products\RM-356\”
      4. Ran JAF to change the 5800 product code to 0578212 (Brazil Red), flash the firmware on the 5800 and then change the 5800 product code back to what it was.

All working correctly! For info on JAF, look for V40 hack forum on this web site.

My impresssion of v50 is that it is not worth the effort to upgrade. The Contacts does NOT have the alphabet display which is the only feature that I wanted, but does not exist.

So, I suggest that you wait for the official release.

The firmware update is numbered v50 and comes with a number of changes. The first major change in this firmware update is the N97 like Music Player.

The music player now resembles exactly like the one in N97. The last firmware update for Nokia 5800 (v40) bought Kinetic scrolling throughout the interface except for in the icon based menu(s). This new firmware update also enables kinetic scrolling in icon based menu(s).

Nokia have also integrated QuickOffice v4.2 in this new firmware. This is quite a let down considering that the latest version of QuickOffice is v6.2. Thankfully, users can uninstall QuickOffice from the phone by going to Application manager.

Another small but welcome change in this new firmware is the ability to decide whether to turn your web browsing history on or off. Nokia have also added a new application called Ovi Sync. This application helps in synchronizing the users data with his Ovi account.

Nokia have also renamed the “Speed Dial” option to “1-touch dialing”.Along with the above mentioned features, the firmware update also brings in some performance improvement and more stability.

It is reported that the update is for certain product codes and certain regions, but still the official version is yet to be released.

Update: It seems that Nokia has added Kinetic scrolling in the web browser as well. But the web browser has lost the option to switch to full screen mode view now.

      updated to firmaware v50.xxx
But I didnt get Quick Office.
Speed Dialling is not renamed to 1-touch dialling
Call settings options is there in dialler
      OviSync application added
Music player with mini albumart view in all songs and album sections now like Nokia N97 music player
Menu has kinetic scrolling but you need to press more than 1 sec to open the applications
Hide option in music player in place of exit
Option to enable history list in web browser
Option to send webpage via message blutooth in webbrowser

      Guys,

Its been a wonderful day for me!!!

First I walked into the nearest Nokia Care centre who tunred me down by saying that they still do not have any info on the v50 firmware. I came back home, downloaded the v50 firmware for APAC and flashed it using JAF. It first displayed chinese language, I downloaded MENA version and then flashed it again.

Now everything is working as it is supposed to. Currently am installing the apps to seeif they have any compatibilty issues. So far so good.
BTW, I flashed it under XP though I have Win7 Ult.

      Good luck guys!!!

Well, I got the update Over the Air (by flashing of course). All changes in the unofficial changelog were correct except for(at least for my phone):

      -Quickoffice
      -the Rihanna thing
      -alphabet display on album
-1 touch dialling is Speed dialling to me

One exceptional change is the SPEED. I mean it man, it’s freakin fast now, even with theme animations turned on. And the Web browser got kinetic scrolling too! Sweet!

I’m using the memory card as the main storage device for everything, images, music, videos, and applications, but my phone memory just left 1.4MB, which is not enough for the update, I have cleared my internet cache as well as the MMS, and used the usb cable to access the phone memory to clear up all unnecessary files, the total size of everything there was just a few hundred KBs.
Anyone knows how to clear up for more spaces?
I have only a few small applications/games installed.

Hi guys. I am finally taking the plunge into using JAF to flash my 5800 to V5. My question is with this line from the tube5800 guide to using JAF:

“When FLASH is complete restart your phone and copy files from Patches.zip to “E:\Patches” and run RP , select “Install Server RP ” and “Open4All RP ””

What is RP ? I am up to this step, but do not know what this is referring to. Thanks in advance.

The Quick office upgrade is not available for most of the APAC PC,

Most of the users have confirmied that its not the part of the standard upgrade…

The first changelog that got released on 19th was for the leaked FW upgrade, so it mentioned, Rihana & Quickoffice.

While Rihana is one stupid app. available in the OVI store..
It would be good if nokia had given quickoffice as a standard,

But, if you dont get quickoffice, dont fret, its not meant for general PCs…Generaly the developer community is getting the specific upgrade…

For most general users there is no Quick office, or RIHANNA..or renaming of Speed Dial to 1- touch dial

After waiting months to get V4, I just had enough and decided to flash to V5 with JAF last night. It wasn’t without some difficulty, but I am extremely pleased now to be running V5. I love kinetic scrolling across the OS.

The web browser is still crappy… Slow, not good fitting contents, and it sometime crashes. The only thing clearly better in this update is the music player and includes nicer and fast scrolling lists. The new menu scroll is not bad but slow.

Alright, I’ll try to address a few concerns that I’ve seen in the comments here.
One, I would recommend checking for likely product codes IN YOUR REGION (Europe, APAC, NAM, etc.) and checking the euro Nokia site posted above to see if the code has the update available. If you do find one, here is a method I found back a while ago to write a new product code into your phone and get the update.

Also, if you are still on v30 (or heaven forbid v20 like I was a while ago) I recommend changing the product code. It will at the least get you to v40, and v50 in time (maybe another few weeks).

Two, AFAIK, no update is available for NAM yet. I’ve tried a few codes and have not seen any that work.

Three, there are 3 (I think) different v50s out right now. v50.x.x.01, 02, 03. 03 at this point seems to have all the features listed by dailymobile while the other two are short on some items. I’m sure 03 will roll out soon enough.

Hope this helps out some people.

      1. They have tried to implement Kinetic scrolling in Web Pages, but it is not that effective.
      2. the web browser automatically goes to full screen mode after 10 seconds.
      3. In email. un-retrieved emails have a Grey colored envelope, whereas the retrieved emails have a yellow colored envelope.

kori, your prob is same like me.. but now i can update to V50 from V31..

What your have to is, change your product code using NSS and update new firmware using NSU (not working if using Nokia Ovi Suite). Then you can change back to your original product code.

mine one is 0578306 (blue)–> change to 0559960 (APAC blue).. 100% works!!

I still have the firmware version V31.0.101. Nokia web page says there is no update available for my phone. Neither NSU or phone’s own updater find any available updates. How can I get the V4.0? I am very enthusiastic about this kinetic scrolling.

    97. 97 DavEr
      Sunday, April 25th, 2010 at 3:31 pm

You will never get the update if it depends on the mobile carrier. For example in my case bloody T-Mobile is stuck with v3 firmware. They only recently went to v3 just because free Ovi Maps works only with this firmware. I don’t think they ever will release v4 or v5…

      You have 2 options:
      - go to a local Nokia store/service station and complain about the phone and they will update the firmware for free
      - simply change product code on the phone (google!) and update firmware. This is what I did.

Btw I don’t have Quick office after the update. As I checked in most countries it was not delivered, probably it is only part of the “illegal” v5 firmware.

    98. 98 CS
      Sunday, April 25th, 2010 at 6:59 pm

      @DavEr
What code did you use to upgrade? I assume you’re in the US too (T-Mobile) but the codes I’ve looked at haven’t had the update available yet.
      Thanks in advance.

There seem to be a few major improvements to web browser.
Firstly, the web browser gets kinetic browsing.

my gps on google map is working fine.
      New updates:
      no pocket office installed.
solved the v40 bug (light not auto off when plug to charge)
      faster in performance.
      camera quality improved.
kinetic scrolling in menu (but it will lagg if u have alot of icons, eg. apps folder)

Overall, there is no regret for this updates. I love it.
