Well its just a rumor for now but the word out is that Nokia 5800 XpressMusic’s resistive touchscreen may soon be replaced by a capacitive touchscreen.
A report from DigiTimes indicates that Nokia has ordered 2 million capacitive touschsreens for their super successful 5800 model. These new capacitive touschscreen units are expected to be shipped in May-June. DigiTimes cites a Taiwan handset component supplier as it’s source.
The rival models from Apple, Samsung and LG also use capacitive touscsreens for their touch phones. Nokia 5800′s screen faced both acclaims and criticism from reviewers worldwide.
Resistive screens needs a solid and precise touch to navigate and they can be used with a stylus as well. Interestingly, capacitive screens are more sensitive and have better response times but are usually more suitable for multi touch devices like Iphone.
If all goes well, look for Nokia to incorporate capacitive panels in an increasing percentage of their line up. Keep your fingers crossed, we will keep you updated on this news/ rumor and what Nokia has in mind actually.

Is the current resistive touch screen ok for you or would you prefer to have capacitive touch feel on your 5800? Which screen technology would be a better choice for the 5800? Share your views in the comments.

In my opinion, capacitive touchscreen is better.

In my opinion, if they want to improve the touchscreen, they must do this by updating the Firmware! I don’t care how! It’s not right that people that have buyed (and payed!) the phone months ago will have a worse screen.
It’s not straight!

yeah i agree with fabio there..even though the capacity touch screen is better(i think) .

I don’t believe that it will come to 5800. Yes, capacitive would be cooler, but then…I like my resistive screen. Capacitive would fit better to N97.

I had changed from the iPhone to Nokia because of the pro precise touchscreen – I am able so type with my thump 3 times faster on a 5800! The iphone touchscreen is only nice for scrolling but not for typing – i <3 my 5800!

Though the capacitive is more responsive as what they’ve said, but i still prefer the resistive one because it’s more practical because you can use many ways for its touch screen like using stylus or whatever you want and it’s still responsive, unlike the capacitive in which you can only use your bare finger, so probably its hard for those who’s fingers are big enough to touch such options then it might accidentally touch the whole options so its hassle. And why they’re against the resistive in which its more accurate than the capacitive. Be contented 5800. Your already at your best. Don’t mind some people’s criticism on you, they are just overwhelmed by your presence.

wats capacitive touchscreen?

I dont think that capacitive screen would be a step forward. I do use my fingers as much as I can. But there are some applications and games out there which I can very hardly imagine to be controlled only by fingers. I mean you can not always replace stylus.. So I dont welcome capacitive touchscreen.

if they will really replace it by new capacitive screen, i’ll suggest that they should let the customers have a choice, give them the phone and change it or leave it as resistive screen for those who want=]

Don’t really know if it will work with the current firmware, the text input like mini QWERTY & handwriting recognition will not work. You cant use a normal stylus. Firmware needs to be upgraded to allow easy texting before capacitive touchscreen is implemented. Capacitive touchscreen would go well on the upcoming N97.

You are totally right JC, I agree with you!

Frankly, I would rather prefer Nokia really work hard in producing a better and stable firmware, if the firmware is good and stable, it is likely that Nokia users would be very happy with whatever screen type…

Nokia has just declined, that 5800 XM won’t get new screen or any other design or hardware changes.

Ever heard of people unlocking the phone and dialing with the help of their nose – those are poor capacity screens owners trying to dial a number on their iphone when it’s cold outside and they wear gloves. Resistive screen owners are not going to get into such trouble

Eh… I consider capacitive to be a downgrade.
Sure, it’s more sensitive, but you lose out on the ability to use anything but your finger, and worse, you lose out big time on precision if you need it. I’ve used an iPhone and a G1 before – both capacitive touch screens – and I was not impressed. They were certainly easy to pick up and use, but beyond that they were not very practical compared to resistive screens.

Well frankly all this should be based of whatthe users are saying. Just because Nokia upgrades their screen doesnt mean it’ll help. Sure, it’ll feel much more solid, but your limited what you can use. So I’d just say NOKIA REALEASE MORE MORE FIRMWARE UPDATES.
Espiecially for the camera. I mean…its good. But in low light its horrible…so ive heard. So whatever it may be. Nokia should make this big decision souly of them. But on the users. But then again..thats just my take on all this.

well, if ever nokia will be changing the screen type, i hope the upgrade will be free for tube users who bought the unit before the upgrade. Looking forward with the capacitive.
