Nokia 5800 v40 Hack Now Available: Get Those Unsigned Apps Now!

Nokia 5800 HacksIf unsigned apps are your forte, then we have something for you which might make you jump from your couch or whatever you are seated on, reading this post of ours. The v40 firmware of our dear Nokia 5800s is now hackable. Thanks to the PNHT team, for bringing the latest hack to the masses.

Lest you get excited, let us first warn you that hacking will void the warranty and it may damage your 5800s. So it’s on your own risk that you try this hack on your 5800s. But, we guess that’s not gonna stop the hot-blooded pards amongst us, now does it? Hit the read button for more details on the hack.

Please note that the present version of hack works only on 5800 V40 RM-356. If your product code reads different from RM-356, you can follow this guide to change your product code. Now that we have set this straight, let’s walk you through the steps involved in the PNHT hack:

  1. Download v40 firmware files using Navifirm and then copy all files to:
    “C:\Program Files\Common Files\Nokia\DataPackage\Products\RM-356\”
  2. Rename the downloaded file “RM356_40.0.005_023_xxx_U01.uda.fpsx” to “RM356_40.0.005_003_U302.uda.fpsx”
  3. Launch JAF and use the following settings:5800-v40hack-PNHT
  4. Select your Phone
  5. 5800 v40 PNHT hack

  6. Switch off your Phone and click on FLASH on JAF window
  7. When FLASH is complete restart your phone and copy files from Patches.zip to “E:\Patches” and run RP+, select “Install Server RP+” and “Open4All RP+”. Add them to auto and that’s it your 5800 is now successfully HACKED!

So that’s it: now you can install all those unsigned apps without ever having to bother about signing them before installing on your 5800s.

I like to have an update to V40 as well. Until today I cannot update with the phone. It says “no update available”. I have a Vodafone subscription. does that have to do something to do with this no update message. I am anxious to install the update through Internet and even more to use the hack. Anyone there to give me solid advise if updating is possible?

Congrats to this hacking. It seems Nokia does not make great effort to stop the hacking efforts. Still this is a great effort of our hackers to making unsigned apps possible.

Guys, what does ‘hackable’ mean and what advantages do such Nokia phones have?

    Hi Admin,

I would like to know apart from installing unsigned apps what are the other advantages of hacked ones.

    First of all -
Thanks for an EXCELLENT post! I have successfully updated my 5800 in South Africa, and the hacked v40 works perfectly!

    Secondly -
The instructions above are NOT perfect, and I struggled to complete the update on my phone. I even BRICKED my 5800 today!!!!! I have since managed to get it working again (PHEW!).

Please note the following additional pieces of information:

    Point 1 Addendum -
When navigating in “Navifirm”, you might NOT see just the v40 files in the Right Hand frame, EVEN if you selected “40.0.5″ under “releases”. Do NOT download files which have something like “31.0….” listed in the file names. You should select another “Variant” (code) to get the latest version set of firmware files which have something like “RM-356 40.0.005..” in the file names.

    Point 1 Addendum -
The default path listed (”C:\Program Files\Common Files\Nokia\DataPackage\Products\RM-356\”) in the instructions did NOT work for me. I had to place all firmware files into “C:\Program Files\Nokia\Phoenix\Products\RM-356″ for JAF to work correctly.

    Point 2 Addendum -
This instruction fails to mention that after renaming the “RM356_40.0.005_023_xxx_U01.uda.fpsx” file, you MUST then replace this missing file with the extra downloaded “RM356_40.0.005_023_xxx_U01.uda.fpsx” file. If you just rename the file, you will have a MISSING file from the firmware set, and this WILL BRICK YOUR PHONE!!!!!!

    Point 4 Addendum -
only when you select the “Use INI” checkbox in JAF will the Phone Model choices come up.

    Point 5 Addendum -
When the Flash to the phone is complete, you can switch the Phone Mode to “Normal” in JAF to release the phone from JAF. Your phone should restart when you change the mode in JAF.

    Point 6 Addendum -
When you restart the phone with the new firmware, you should see the application called “ROMPatcher ” under “Applications” which you must run. This is “RP “.

    Final Notes:
    a. This procedure actually FLASHES the entire firmware (Operating System) of the phone and is EXTREMELY dangerous! If the flashing does not work perfectly, you can BRICK your phone!!!!

    b. V40 is still NOT available in South Africa. I changed the phone code from South Africa (0575950) to British Isles Red (0552438) using JAF. See the V40 post “Firmware Update V.40 Brings Kinetic Scrolling to 5800 Finally!!”. Be VERY careful if you change the phone code, since you will lose any warranty you may have on the phone. I also suggest that you change the code back to what it was, after all operations/flash has completed.

    c. By Hacking your phone, you will be able to install any SIS file on the phone, whether it is signed or not. You will not get the “Certificate Error” for unsigned applications. You also loose any warranty you may have on the phone. You can also (potentially) install a destructive application on the phone. Do so at your own risk!

    Enjoy!

Its working on 7 for me, only problem is when I try to check the use INI box, it won’t stay ticked, says it can’t find an ini file, I can’t find one on navifirm for any region. I’m in NZ by the way. And they still haven’t even released v40 here.

    Any help would be great

Just a bit of advice for a few of the problems mentioned above:

If you don’t like your product code, just change it. download NSS, you can find it on google, then the interface is pretty self explanatory. I have a blue version on a vodafone subscription (0577089), one of thee last too get an update, but I changed it temporarily for the update, and now I am doing the same for the hack.

If you are having a problem with OS compatibility, right click on the program, go to properties and on one of the tabs you can choose to run it in compatibility mode for XP. there shouldn’t be a problem with 64-bt OS’s, they can run programs for 32-bit as well

    Hi all,

Some extra advice for a few of the problems mentioned above:

If you are not running v40 and cannot find the v40 files for your phone code in “Navifirm”, just download all v40 files for another phone code with the same region/language as your code. Then you can use NSS (thanks JBG) or use JAF to change your phone code to the same code as the downloaded files (in JAF, select “Prod. Manager” check box and then press “SERVICE” button).

I also got the problem with unable to check the “use INI” box which won’t stay ticked. If you read through the output log, you may see something like:
Searching for JAF saved location of ini…
    Checking path: C:\Program Files\Nokia\Phoenix\Products\RM-356\
    No ini files found…

This is EXACTLY why I moved all my firmware files from the instructed incorrect location (C:\Program Files\Common Files\Nokia\DataPackage\Products\RM-356\) to the JAF indicated location (C:\Program Files\Nokia\Phoenix\Products\RM-356\) and then suddenly the INI box was checked! I then saw the following output:
Searching for JAF saved location of ini…
    Checking path: C:\Program Files\Nokia\Phoenix\Products\RM-356\
    Scanning ini files…

After changing the location, I then got all the different firmware update options (MCU, PPM, APE) lit up, and the following output:
    FILES SET FOR FLASHING:
    MCU Flash file: C:\Program Files\Nokia\Phoenix\Products\RM-356\RM-356_40.0.005_prd.core.C00
    PPM Flash file: C:\Program Files\Nokia\Phoenix\Products\RM-356\RM-356_40.0.005_prd.rofs2.V01
    CNT Flash file: C:\Program Files\Nokia\Phoenix\Products\RM-356\RM-356_40.0.005_C01_prd.rofs3.fpsx
    APE Variant file: C:\Program Files\Nokia\Phoenix\Products\RM-356\RM356_40.0.005_023_xxx_U01.uda.fpsx

This is why I said that it will flash the ENTIRE firmware of your phone.

Another big problem I encountered in JAF was the error:
    Can’t detect flashing server!
This error was also overcome when I changed the location of the firmware files.

Just read the error messages, and Google the messages if necessary.

I must say that I am very happy with the update, and now I can install any SIS application! It is worth the effort.

    @Sergio #17

If you do NOT see ROMPatcher (under “Applications”) on phone, then I think you have flashed the phone, but not applied the application patch that includes ROMPatcher.

Please do the following in the Firmware folder on PC where all the firmware files are (C:\Program Files\Nokia\Phoenix\Products\RM-356\):
    1. Rename the standard file “RM356_40.0.005_023_xxx_U01.uda.fpsx” to “RM356_40.0.005_003_U302.uda.fpsx”
    2. Add the NEW file “RM356_40.0.005_023_xxx_U01.uda.fpsx” to the folder (to restore the missing file). This file can be downloaded as in link “dl link for RM356_40.0.005_023_xxx_U01.uda.fpsx” near the top of this page.

Now re-flash the phone with JAF and done! You should NOW see the new ROMPatcher app under “applications” on the phone.

If a folder does not exist, create it. Just make sure it matches what the output says it expects…

This is MY OWN personal step-by-step guide:

How to upgrade Nokia 5800 to v40.00.005
with ROMPatcher Application - Feb 2010
    =======================================

    PREPARE FIRMWARE:
    —————–
    1.
Download all firmware files using “Navifirm” and save to:
    C:\Program Files\Nokia\Phoenix\Products\RM-356\
You should have 8 files in this folder
(These files contain all firmware for phone)

    2.
Rename the downloaded file “RM356_40.0.005_023_xxx_U01.uda.fpsx” to “RM356_40.0.005_003_U302.uda.fpsx”

    3.
Replace the missing “RM356_40.0.005_023_xxx_U01.uda.fpsx” file with the patched file.
    (”RM356_40.0.005_023_xxx_U01.uda.fpsx” contains all 5800 Apps,
    including “ROMPatcher “)

    SETUP APPLICATIONS ON PC:
    ————————-
    4.
    Run/Install “JAFSetup_1.98.62.exe”
You can Check existing USB Drivers (version: 7.1.23.0).
Do NOT install USB Drivers from JAF.

    5.
    Copy “OGM_JAF_PKEY_Emulator_v 5.exe” to Desktop.

    RUN JAF:
    ——–
    6.
    Run “OGM_JAF_PKEY_Emulator_v 5.exe” from Desktop.
Scroll to Right - Press “Go”
Ignore error “BOX DRIVER NOT INSTALLED” and press “OK”
    JAF will start

    7.
    Select “BB5″ tab on top
Select “Prod. Manager” check box and press “Service” button
Read Phone Code. Code should be same as “Navifirm” (firmware)
Write Phone Code if changed and close.

    8.
    Select “BB5″ tab on top
Select ONLY the following check boxes (delselect all others):
    X Manual Flash
    X Dead USB
    X Use INI
    Select Phone Model as “RM-356″
All 4 lights should be green and message should show:
    FILES SET FOR FLASHING:
    MCU Flash file: C:\Program Files\Nokia\Phoenix\Products\RM-356\RM-356_40.0.005_prd.core.C00
    PPM Flash file: C:\Program Files\Nokia\Phoenix\Products\RM-356\RM-356_40.0.005_prd.rofs2.V01
    CNT Flash file: C:\Program Files\Nokia\Phoenix\Products\RM-356\RM-356_40.0.005_C01_prd.rofs3.fpsx
    APE Variant file: C:\Program Files\Nokia\Phoenix\Products\RM-356\RM356_40.0.005_023_xxx_U01.uda.fpsx
    Languages in ppm: English,French,German,Italian,Spanish,Portuguese

    RUN UPDATE:
    ———–
    9.
Switch off your Phone and click on FLASH button on JAF window
If you get errors like the following, ensure all files extracted to correct folder
Searching for JAF saved location of ini…
    Checking path: C:\Program Files\Nokia\Phoenix\Products\RM-356\
    No ini files found…
    FILES SET FOR FLASHING:
    MCU Flash file: NONE
    PPM Flash file: NONE
    CNT Flash file: NONE
    APE Variant file: NONE
    Detected P-KEY: 9000AAC9
    P-key nokia module version 01.02
    Init usb communication…
    Can’t detect flashing server!

    FINISH ON PHONE:
    —————-
    10.
When the Flash to the phone is complete, you can switch the Phone Mode to “Normal” in JAF to release the phone from JAF.
Your phone should restart normally when you change the mode in JAF.

    11.
Copy 2 files from \Patches to Phone:
    E:\Patches\
    On Phone,under “Applications”,run “ROMPatcher “.
Select “Install Server RP ” and “Open4All RP ” to go green.
    Add both files to auto

    DONE:
    —–
    12.
Now you can install any UNSigned SIS file on phone!

Note: You should use JAF and change the Phone Code back to whatever it was before the upgrade.

to site admins: is there a way we can talk to phone companies in the country where the update is not available? I really want to get my phone updated in calgay canada but its not available. And also, is there a thread you can create where we can give ideas to others about what apps we’re looking for?

@Interpreet- You can contact your company if you want but it usually takes a few months for the update to spread all over the world.

And yeah we will create a page to submit your ideas.
