The guys over at Nokia Beta Labs have formally launched the next-gen Java Runtime for S60 5th edition devices like Nokia 5800 and N97. The new Nokia Java Runtime 2.0 (JRT 2.0) is a totally re-written Java mobile execution environment for Nokia S60 devices.
The update is a 4 MB installation that modifies any already-installed Java MIDlets to work properly with the new runtime version. The new Java Runtime is integrated with Ovi, offering one-click application installation and automatic updates.
It gives you several usability and performance improvements, including:
- One-click application installation
- Improved application launch user experience
- Improved execution performance
Nokia Beta Labs has put some details about this latest Java Runtime-
These improvements will make it much more fun for you to enjoy the thousands of games and apps available in Ovi Store and elsewhere.
In addition, we have made major changes under the hood. From now on, Java Runtime will be developed and released independent from S60 releases. This means that you will always get the latest version directly to your phone, using the built-in Nokia S60 Software Update functionality.

The new runtime is available from Nokia Beta Labs, with the normal caveats about running beta software.

It’s big, no two ways about it. Some subtle improvements in speed. But… Opera mini no longer works. Tried uninstalling, reinstalling, signed and unsigned versions. Gmail,Gmaps, widgets work fine.
