Opera Releases Opera Mini 5 Beta- Adds Tabbed Browsing
Filed Under Nokia 5800 Applications
Opera, best known for their browsers for both desktop and mobile platforms have just released the beta version of their latest mobile browser- Opera Mini 5. As with every new application on our platform, we gave it a spin and boy, we just love it. Its simply awesome.
While its predecessor- Opera Mini 4 was in itself a revolutionary browser on the mobile platform, Opera just couldn’t cope up with the periodic updates, the symbian browser received via every firmware update. While the symbian browser got faster and got its bugs fixed, the opera mini 4 was left untouched by its developers. Just when we thought the days of Opera on our 5800s are numbered, the folks at Opera are back with an absolute delight with their beta version of the Opera Mini 5. Its not even the full version and we just can’t have enough of it. Roll over and see what makes us say that about this awesome browser from Opera.
Screenshots-

The first thing that will catch you eye is the slick new interface of the browser which now has the looks and functionality of Opera browser on our desktops. What Opera calls the speed dial is the thumbnail links to the most commonly accessed webpages from the browser, a concept first implemented by Opera which was later adopted by Google in their browser-Chrome.
We all know how painful and un-intuitive it is to type an address or compose a mail on our 5800s using the symbian keyboards for it hides the application we are using. Now thanks to our friends at Opera, 5800 now has the “iPhone”ish keypad for that added convenience of being able to see the browser as we type. This automatically translates into being able to select options from the predictive text as highlighted in the second screenshot above.
Features:
- Innovative and Easy-to-use
- Tabs
- Password Manager
- Full web in your palm
- Touch & Keypad
- Speed Dial
- Built for Speed
- Find things faster
- Power Scrolling
We are so used to tabbed browsing these days that its hard to imagine browsing the web in their absence. We have been waiting since long to see this feature on our 5800s and thanks to Opera, we now a have this feature on our 5800s. We can go on and on in praise of the latest browser from Opera but we would like our readers to test drive the browser by themselves. Do get back to us and share your browsing experience on Opera Mini 5 beta.

Opera mini lacks full flash support. I was unable to open a website with Opera which I do open with the Nokia browser.
Peace!

I use it, and it’s great! It also allows copy/paste, which is very useful.

Good thing you guys covered this. I was about to send you an email letting you know about it after I saw the story on phonescoop and downloaded it. This version of Opera is absolutely fantastic. Normally I had used Opera for its ability to load quickly and use less data but this release makes it my browser of choice now.
The multiple tabs, keyboard, and overall layout make this a great app. I just wish that I could default this browser on the 5800 instead of clicking a link and having it open with the Nokia browser.
The only flaw I’ve found (other than full flash support like Sarim said) is the inability to change the speed dial once it’s in there. Maybe I just haven’t looked closely enough but I want to change one and I’m not exactly sure how to.
Anyway it’s a great browser and I’d highly recommend it. Also, as a tip, touch and hold a link to either copy it or open it in a new tab.

People, bare in mind that is only in beta stage. That’s why flash and other stuff isn’t supported. Just wait until full comes out.
Peace.

Its a huge impovement. Even though iphone style keyboard is cool, predictive text via the number pad is far quicker and easier. This could well become my primary browser.

Great app. It should be my default browser after it comes out of beta.

real nice work
i would be nice to use (and to be able to create custom) search engines so that one could just type in the address bar something like “g opera mini” for google search or “w opera” for wikipedia search etc.

Sucks. Can’t establish connection, fails to load etc. I can’t even shut it down without booting my phone. I can force it to crash if I open every app I have, but what a waste of time. And what a piece of ***t.
Ok, it’s beta, but it still sucks monkey balls!

Harianna, thank you very much. I should’ve caught something like that.
Thanks again.

I never felt that I was using a Mobile browser!!! It was so intuitive, fast; honestly, FIRST TIME EVER, I liked surfing on mobile!!!!
Though, it lacks flash, and the SPEED DIAL is not customizable.. but trust me, it’s THE BEST BROWSER EVER man!!!!
Kudos to Opera team!!!!

loving the new opera mini…only thing is that it will only connect over my wifi connection at home and not over 3g…assuming that will change after beta or can i change the network selection?

@blakeym - If you’re not connected to your home WiFi connection, it will connect to 3G.
@Neo - The Speed Dial is customizable. Just touch and hold the Speed Dial and it will show you the edit options.
P.S. Credits to Harriana for the Speed Dial instructions.

@blakeym, Puppek,
You have to set the parameters of the application.
So, go to “Parameters” (I don’t know if it’s the same in english, in fact I’m french so i can see “Paramètres”…).
Then, “Applications”, “Installed Apps”, choose Opera mini, “options”, “Parameters suite”, “Access point”, and here, choose your 3G access.

Whilst I consider the 5800 to be the best phone I have ever owned, I could never live with the built in browser. Opera mini 5 is stunning can’t wait for the full release.

The interface of this new version is fantastic but the most serious problem it suffers from is the lack of bilingual support. I am using to switch the language of typing between English and Persian. That is used when you’re going to type something in a non-Latin language such as Persian or Arabic. This vital feature is fully supported in Opera 4 but unfortunately it isn’t supported in this version. I hope this shortcoming would be covered in the final version.

I just disabled “Inline Editing” and the problem was solved but in this way, I’ll be defected from this smart and brilliant feature.

“Felipe”
- I think, what you are talking about, is adding new URL to speed dial;I know how to do that… but, I want to “EDIT” already existing ones…
- Like, I want to replace BBC, or say,ABOUT OPERA with my new ones…
Please let us know if it is possilbe ornot
