If anyone were to ever ask us whats sorely missing in our 5800s, we would say the absence of a powerful media player with extended capabilities that go beyond playing music files and displaying album art. One thing we sorely missing in the present symbian music player is the genre specific shuffle and catering exactly to this need is the latest music app in ovi store- Playlist DJ.
While the shuffle mode of the player is satisfactory for random playback of pre-loaded tracks, an intelligent shuffle tool that can shortlist tracks depending on our mood can go a long way in extending the music capabilities of our 5800s. Does Playlist DJ fill in the void in the symbian music player? Hit the jump button to find out.

Aren’t those cute smileys there? We still dont have these smileys for our texting needs but thats another story altogether. Coming back to Playlist DJ, to get the app working it needs data access to profile your music collection. This is probably the weakest link you can find in this app for the profiling will take sometime and it tends to hang at times but make no mistake once the profiling is done, the app transforms your music player to your mobile personal DJ.
By DJ we don’t mean it will mix music for you but it will definitely shortlist tracks based on your mood you set by toggling the four smileys and yeah the profiling is pretty accurate as far as our experience goes with it. There is another alternative way in which the app can generate playlists: say you dont have the patience to toggle the smiley bars, you can always tap on the search button and select the track you wanna listen and the app will queue similar songs in the playlist. Hows that for the lazy sloths?
What we like?
- Auto-generation of playlists from tracks as well as mood bars
- Cool interface
- Integration with symbian music player
What we don’t like?
- Music profiling is data intensive (~80 kb/track)
Verdict
Playlist DJ is an amazing music application which we would say is definitely a “must have” for 5800ers with huge music collections. Now you don’t have to lose sleep over selecting the right track to go with your mood. Just let the app take care of that for you while you hum on to your favorite tracks be it when you or sweating it out in the gym or during that late evening ride in the train after work, Playlist DJ can render the exact track you would want to listen to.
As seen with some of the most popular apps in the ovi store, Playlist DJ is available as a free download as well but for a limited period only (till 31st October 09). So waste no time and head over to ovi store before you run out of time.

Mh,
downloaded it yesterday already, and tried it out – it works like a charm… well data intensive, who cares – wifi and you are fine
The only thing that bugs me, is the lenght of the Playlists… max 24 songs into one playlist :/
I also found the moods are not too accurate :/ – i tried the third one maxing out, the others were set to zero… well, the songs did not really fit the needs
I got two linkin park albums on my phone, and the lamest songs of them have been put on first play, wtf?

how to use wifi to profile my music?
when the songs start profiling it automatically uses my data connection and its super expensive!

botak,
just delete the access points of your data connection, then there will be a question before doing anything with internet if you want to use wifi, and what wifi you prefer (if there is more than one)
