Twitter, which is probably the most happening networking cum micro-blogging service went mobile today, and as usual we gave it a test drive on our 5800s.
It’s not like Twitter was not mobile till today, there have been a considerable number of apps bringing twitter access to 5800ers, Gravity and Tweets60 being our favorites, apart from the twitter service from the browser. However the official twitter web page lacked a mobile version till today and after playing around with it for a couple of hours, we find it largely disappointing. Hit on the jump button to know why.
The first three screenshots are of the mobile version of twitter accessed from the symbian browser and the last one is of another twitter service being offered by a mobile site going by the name of dabr.co.uk, which is a much better option in our view.
First and foremost, mobile version of twitter is faster than the standard version, which you might guess is because the mobile version doesn’t load any profile photos and background images of the standard twitter page. Absence of profile images is kinda disappointing, especially considering that we are used to Gravity and Tweets60. Further the mobile version has no option for replies, DM, RT etc (not yet for 5800s) as of the time being.
The new mobile version which is based in Twitter APIs looks much better on the symbian third edition devices access to full twitter features (replies, DM, RT and the all new ReTweet) along with profile pics and background images. This means that the new mobile version is not yet optimized for the symbian fifth edition devices including our 5800s.
We are staying with Gravity for the time being and in case you don’t want to shell a few bucks on a dedicated twitter client, Tweets60 is a good alternative, available for free. Further, if you are running short of memory on your 5800, dablr.co.uk offers an excellent browser based twitter functions for 5800ers.
Head to mobile.twitter.com, to check the availability of the new mobile version of twitter. In case you spot the improved version, do drop us a line here.

I use dabr.co.uk for 1 year and I think it’s the best way to twitt on my 5800.
