Does Nokia always punish early adopters? Thats the question almost every geek who has ever owned a Nokia device would have asked himself atleast with one of their products. While the saga of Internet tablets from Nokia is a classical example of the Finnish company being hard on early adopters, our very own 5800 hasn’t been spared either.
Nokia 5800, which was Nokia’s first touch screen device was also the first to feature the symbian fifth edition (s60 v5) OS. While s60 v5 has steadily matured into its present version, the number of devices featuring the OS has also increased over the last year. Nokia now has as many as 3 other (5530, N97, X6) models under its s60 v5 hood, all of which feature marginally improved features in the phone OS.
While we can go on and on in listing the features our dear 5800 misses, lets summarise some of the most sought after ones: Kinetic scrolling (the latest N97 firmware brings kinetic scrolling to most of the s60 v5 menus), widgetized homescreen (N97 and 5530). We have been requesting these features for quiet sometime now, and its been on the wishlist by 5800ers in several forums/blogs. A few 5800ers have been enterprising enough to file an online petition requesting the same and as loyal 5800ers, we deem its our duty to sign this petition.
As has been pointed out by the petitioners, all of the s60v5 phones from Nokia feature the same processor and hence hardware limitation is totally ruled out. And with the release of 5800 Navigation Edition, Nokia has officially extended the life span of our 5800s by atleast a year meaning phasing out 5800s is out of question as well. The only thing that we can think of thats preventing Nokia from releasing a firmware upgrade with advanced features is its pure reluctance to entertain early adopters.
While Nokia has a good track record when it comes to maintaining its market image, early adopters have been at the receiving end of the Finnish manufacturer. Let’s fix this jinx for good by signing this online petition which shouldn’t take more than a minute to sign.

Election day here in Portugal, election day in Nokia!
I hope that Nokia gets this petition and reads it well, because it lists everything that’s missing in our cute 5800′s!!!

I signed too. But there’re a few extra features I’d like.
Such as in landscape view, the ‘Options’ and ‘Back’ buttons shouldn’t be on the left. I wish Nokia could make them come on the bottom of the screen. Do you follow?
And I’d love to see the dialer and homescreen in lanscape too.
Another thing I’d like is for the camera to be upgraded. The video quality is too low, but the pictures are pretty neat in 3.2 megapixel. I wish Nokia does something to make the video camera use the 3.2 megapixel Carl Zeiss lens instead of the 640×320 pixel.
You know, at times I wonder; Nokia’s such a huge corporation…why do they let such minor difficulties bug them? A little reserarch anda new firmware release would solve almost all problems and make 5800 the silckest phone in the market.

Nabeel, I agree with everything you stated right there. I’m with you man.

Made me go ‘Holy Sh*t!!!’
This is WAYYYYYYYYY cooool!
Now I’m myself a 5800 user, but this N900 blew my mind away. This is technology FAR beyond anything I guess! It incorporates the switching desktop view of Samsung, the widgetized homescreen, the what-not and the everything in a cool slick phone with 1 gig internal memory and 48 gig expandable.
Folks, I’m getting an N900 as soon as it hits the markets.
@Admin:
Check it out!

I made a mistake in my previous post. There’s 32 gig of internal memory. 1 gig is used up by the processor….

Monday, September 28th, 2009 at 11:45 am
i’ve signed.. i’m not happy that it went up to this point where the 5800-owners have to ask (kneeling) Nokia to have the update for our phones. i’m from philippines, here the only update we’ve got is ver. 21… ver 30/31 haven’t reached us yet.. and its been ages since it was released..

This is the mail I sent to the link mentioned above by hyAxis
As an early Nokia adopter, having bought almost all symbian devices from Nokia (non-symbian based either, like 3210,3310, 3330 and so on), I’m really disappointed about the fact that my 5800 XpressMusic hasn’t got features that are present in the far cheaper 5530, or the upcoming 5230. What am I talking about? I’m talking about Kinetic Scrolling, widgetized homescreen featuring “XpressMusic Carousel 2009″ (the new XM homescreen) and, why not, the nGage support. I don’t think that this could be difficult for you, because all s60 v5 devices Nokia released are based on the same cpu and have the same available amount of RAM at start. So why on earth Nokia is so willing to disappoint those who, like me, are early adopters of the 5800 XM? You must be thankful to us, because without us this device would have never reached the sales-record you are experiencing right now. Are you happy you’re selling all these devices, aren’t you? So make us happy too and release a new firmware which includes the features I mentioned above, otherwise you’ll have 8 millions of disappointed customers.
Cheers

Gerry, I like your attitude. You go right to the point. Excellent message. I hope that Nokia reads it and takes it in consideration.
I agree with everything you say there.

this one’s for you finnish giant… we want reform we want you to notice us!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Tuesday, September 29th, 2009 at 12:52 pm
Signed.
Another thing i hope they add to it is multi-touch capability.
Tuesday, September 29th, 2009 at 7:41 pm
I doubt that Nokia will release a new firmware for this phone.
5800 XM was their first try on the market.
They see that they can sell A LOT of touch phones, and that S60v5 is a great software, and people got used to it really quick.
So now, they will produce new phones, and will say goodbye to 5800XM.
Thats up things works. It sucks, but works.
As an owner of 5800- I’ll just have to think twice before I’ll buy any other phone from Nokia.

Signed it, hopefully we’ll gat these features soon.
Tuesday, September 29th, 2009 at 11:02 pm
it’s a market strategy, if you could sell a new product, even by just giving a little new feature, then it will be a stupid act if u give the old one an upgrade and having same features like the new one as it will only make the new one become not attractive to the buyers.
I think it would not be come true, just throw up ur phone, and buy the new one, or wait until there someone who genius enough to make a hack version of fimrware that could do almost anything like the new product (just like CHDK for canon point and shot camera), sorry for my poor english.

Early adopter or not, the Nokia 5800 firmware is unacceptably buggy. My browser is completely dead now. Lame! Still stuck on v2.
Just remember that updates don’t rely on Nokia but the network operators. T-mobile have said to be holding up firmware updates to v3 for certain product codes.

Signed under number 5128.
As i commented there, what was a lovemark for my druing the past 10 years is now becoming a doubt and a regret i chose 5800 instead of its competitors. If it goes like that this is my last nokia device. The market advances enough so now theres a choice:)
Friday, October 2nd, 2009 at 11:50 pm
its like that was my last nokia device. Nokia is my lovemark for the last 10 years, but i will not pay so much money for a device by them anymore. I don’t regret having it, but i would not recomend nokia anymore. Customer care should go first. In times of recession one should build and maintain a lovemark within a brand. Well neighter Nokia prices, nor their phones are good, atleast until they give us an update that really changes some of our experience…
Saturday, October 3rd, 2009 at 8:48 am

Is it normal? Is Nokia bother from their 5800 users who wants their phone, the ONE, the first, without a widgetized homescreen and kinetik scrolling??? I HOPE NO!
Where the petition will be sent? WHEN?
The Last firmware update was very missing of improvements…
Is this the end?
